Marathon Training Week 1: What Was Planned vs. What Happened
As a general note: I have set warm ups and exercises that Susie has given me in addition to running workouts etc. For the sake of simplicity, I’m only going to show actual workouts. You can assume that on any given day, I’m also doing some kind of strengthening exercises and/or foam rolling as assigned. This is a customized training plan that Susie put a lot of work into, so I’m not just gonna go posting it on the interwebs π
Monday 01/11/16: Familiarizing myself with various exercise | As Scheduled
Susie put together some activation exercises, hip and ankle strengthening exercises, and dynamic warm-ups for me to do before and after running, so I read through them/looked at pictures, and did a round of everything.
Tuesday 01/12/16: 3 Miles Easy |Β 3 Miles Easy
This was my first run in over a week, and my first treadmill run in I don’t know how long. I was happy to take it nice and easy, and I felt fantastic afterwards.
Wednesday 01/13/16: Spin |Β 15 Minutes Core
I got an email on Tuesday afternoon that due to my regular instructor being out of town and not being able to find a sub, my Wednesday 6 am spin class was cancelled. I can’t lie, I was pretty happy not to have to get up at 5:30. But I made myself do some core exercises just so that I’d get some activity in.
Thursday 01/14/16: 3 Miles Easy |Β 3.3 Miles Easy
It’s really nice to have a prescribed “easy run” pace. I’ve written before about how I tend to run too fast on so-called easy runs. Having set paces to hit makes it a lot easier to just slow down and enjoy. I felt absolutely magnificent after this run!
Friday 01/15/16: Active Rest/Strengthening |Β 2 Hours Dance + Hip & Ankle Strength
Rehearsal was full of dancing, which was a great alternative workout.
Saturday 01/16/16: 5K Time Trial |Β 5k in 28:50
This run was AWESOME! I did a 1 mile warm up, then took off. I tried to start conservatively, then picked up the pace incrementally. I managed a 28:50, which is 5 seconds faster than my 5k race PR!
Sunday 01/17/16: Yoga |Β 4 Hour Dance Rehearsal
I chose sleep and cleaning over yoga this morning, and then ended up dancing my a$$ off for 4 hours at rehearsal.
All in all it was a great first week of marathon training. I know it will only get harder as things go along, but I’m hoping that I can keep the momentum going.
How was your week in training?
Sounds like a great start to your training! And nice job on the time trial… Speedy McSpeederson! π I didn’t do much of anything this week, but I’ve got a fitness challenge at work starting up soon, so I have big plans for that π
Awesome! Can’t wait to hear all about it π
Well done! Last week’s workouts were all over the map; a run here, skiing there, shoveling lots of snow and a little more running.
Hey, alternative workouts like shoveling are better than sitting on your butt!
Absolutely! Got a little shoveling done this morning too….was ready to go for the day π
Thanks boo boo π I totally appreciate you honoring my work! We are going to kick ass, you and I!
Hell yeah, we are!
Awesome time trial!!! Congrats on getting through your first week of marathon training, that has to feel good. 4 hours of dancing sounds exhausting. π
Oh man, I was SOOO tired I just wanted to sleep forever. And I slept till 10 on Monday, so I feel better now π
Great job this week, especially with that time trial! I always have such a hard time getting myself to run race pace on my own. What an awesome run, and an awesome week!! I notice there is no more tap class, but dance class. I love it!!!
Thanks, lady! Yeah, tap is sadly over, but I’m in a production of Mary Poppins, which will have me dancing A LOT! π
