I have a 10 miler on the docket for tomorrow. 10 miles is the farthest I’ve ever run solo/in training, and every 10 miler I’ve ever done has left a bad taste in my mouth. Either it sucks and I hate it, or I don’t fuel properly and end up sick all day after. I’m hoping that tomorrow’s run will break the 10 mile curse and get me ready to face longer distances that are forthcoming with marathon training.
I am now obsessed with Yoga With Adriene on YouTube. My friend Nicole suggested the videos when I lamented my seeming inability to get out of bed for a Sunday morning yoga class. Now, I can do yoga in the comfort and privacy of my home, and totally on my own schedule. It’s so awesome. Adriene is down to earth and funny, but I still feel like I’m getting most of the same benefits as going to class.
I’m signed up for another race! The Vermont 100on100 relay is similar to a Ragnar race, but it’s only 100 miles in one day. You still have a big team and you still drive around in a van and get sweaty and smelly, but it’s a little less of a crazy commitment. Six people per team, each runner has 3 legs for a total of 13-18 miles. My friend Chris is a team captain and asked yesterday if I wanted to join his team “J’adore Hardcore.” Um, YES! We’ll rent a room in Stowe for the night before, and a room at Okemo for the night after, so it’s a big fun weekend event. I can’t wait!
Have you ever done a relay race like Ragnar or 100on100? Did you have fun?
Watch the fuelling Rae…sometimes too much can make you feel icky too. You need to find your happy spot. 🙂
Yeah, it’s definitely still a work in progress. I need to pay more attention to what I eat the day before.
When I was doing marathon training, I would eat toast with pb and j the night before (because I can’t eat before runs unless I have two hours of “settle” time). That would keep me going enough to make it through the longer runs.
I always eat before runs, my stomach is usually pretty good. Just an english muffin with jam or butter.
Maybe try a smidge of protein? Not much, but like a bit of nut butter or something?
Sometimes I do. I just don’t really like nut butters very much.
Ten milers are no problem – you can crush it! I recommend Swedish Fish as in-run fuel and saving some good music for those in-the-middle miles. WDW soundtracks help me visualize fun times. GO GET ‘EM!
Oo, I like these tips very much. I’ve never tried candy for fueling but I guess it’s not that much different from chews or sport beans.
Good luck on the 10 miler!! You got it!
Thanks, lady! I think I just need to get over the mental aspect of it and I’ll be fine.
Good luck on the run! That VT relay sounds so fun, I bet it will be beautiful. When is the race?
August, which is the only bummer, haha. It will be so hot and humid!
Good luck on the 10 miler, Rachel! If you ever want a long run buddy in the future let me know – I bit the bullet and signed up for VCM!

Hey that’s awesome! I will mostly likely hit you up to be my running buddy soon. 10+ miles is a loooong way to go alone.
Good luck on that 10 miler!!! Can’t wait to hear out it goes!
I’m def gonna check out that Youtube yoga channel. I like doing Youtube videos 🙂
That race sounds a lot less stressful than a regular Ragnar. I’d want to do one, but it seems too much logistics for me, lol! Ain’t no one got time for dat!
I agree! One day of living in a van is enough for me, haha!
Fuel is tricky on long runs. I still run without it but I need to work on that. I usually carry Swedish Fish on race days though. Good luck with your 10 miler!! I’ve been wanting to run something like a Ragnar I can’t find enough people to join me!
I keep hearing good things about Swedish Fish! It just so happens that I’m now completely out of on-the-run fuel, so I think I’ll be picking up some little red gummy fish 🙂
Break the curse!!! And let me know when that race is, please.
The 100on100? It’s not until August, so thankfully it won’t need to factor into The Plan for VCM!
That relay sounds fun! I’ve only done 1 relay but I loved it, and want to do more! Good luck with your 10-miler… hopefully this will be the one that goes awesomely and makes you feel badass instead of bad! 🙂
Haha, it wasn’t amazing, but it was worlds better than any other 10 mile run I’ve done before, so I’ll take it!
I have to run 10 miles too. It is going to be sooo cooold this weekend. I may bail until Monday.
Good luck out there! I hope the weather cooperates.
