What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 04/18/16: Rest | Rest

At this point in our vacation travels, we were in North Carolina, and Ben’s cousin lives on a really busy road with no shoulder, so I didn’t have any good options for running. We mostly sat around, eating and drinking.

Tuesday 04/19/16: 45 Minute Easy Run | Rest

See Monday, haha.

Wednesday 04/20/16: Rest | 2 Miles Walking at Natural Bridge, VA

You’ll see more about this in my vacation recap, but we took the scenic route through the Shenandoah Valley on our way back up to DC, and stopped at Natural Bridge, VA for a nice nature walk to break up the drive.

Thursday 04/21/16: 45 Minute Moderate Run | 5+ Miles Walking

We did ALL THE WALKING this day. At least 5 miles, probably closer to 10. We also ate ALL THE FOOD.

Friday 04/22/16: 45 Minute Easy Run | 5+ Miles Walking + 5k Race

Another big day of walking and exploring in downtown DC, and then I met up with Nicole to run a 5k race in Crystal City. SO much fun!

Saturday 04/23/16: Rest | Rest

We drove back up to NJ, and spent the day relaxing on the deck with beers in hand, enjoying the sunshine.

Sunday 04/24/16: 18 Miles or Rest | Rest

Coach Suz gave me the option to do my long run Sunday or Monday, and since we were driving home Sunday, I decided to push it back until Monday.

Weekly Mileage: 3.32

Total 2016 Mileage: 269.6

So, yeah, not an ideal week. I truly meant to run more, but when you’re on the go, traveling a lot, it’s hard, especially if you’re in a new/unfamiliar place. It’s time to double down and really commit to these last couple of high mileage weeks before taper. I have to run 18 miles after work tonight (gulp), and I’m doing a group 20 miler with Athleta on Sunday, and then that’s pretty much it. Holy shit.

Have you ever missed a bunch of runs late in training for a race? Did it work out ok?

    Well, as much as I would like the 18 miler to happen, i also know that you have to work. Remember, if need be, we can turn things around a little bit, k? Just make sure you get miles in today, period. Text me if you need me.

    I am the worst at following any sort of plan, so my advice isn’t worth crap! 😀 haha Heck, I can’t even manage a decent taper without saying ‘screw it’ and going for a run.

    But all of that comes from two things:
    – Decades of running without a plan
    – A few decent races with PR after PR based on loosely following a plan.

    I think Suz is solid in her thinking – get out tonight and just bust a move on all of those miles. I have high confidence in your ability, just get to doing it – warm yourself up, be smart about fueling and hydration … and do it!

    And for the rest of the week make sure you are doing everything you make sure to maximize putting good stuff into your body and pushing overall fitness. You want to be in the best position for success on the day of marathon!

      Oof, yeah, definitely need to refocus on hydration and fueling–vacation does not lead to good eating and drinking habits. I’m feeling surprisingly ok about 18 miles tonight, but we’ll see how I feel at mile 10, haha!

    Vacation means rest!! You will be great. I sometimes run my best races where I need to take a running time out later in my training. Keep it up, lady – home stretch! You got it! Almost taper time!
