Manic Monday Training Recap – 02/11/19

Manic Monday

What Was Planned vs What Happened

Monday 02/04/19: 1.5 mile run | 1.5 mile run + hip strength + stretching
My body felt refreshed after taking a full rest day on Sunday, but I still kept the pace nice and easy for this run. I also did 30 each of clam shells, reverse clam shells, side leg lifts, glute bridges, and air squats, and finished up with my split stretch routine.

Tuesday 02/05/19: Strength | Arms + Abs
I did a couple of short workouts from the Tone It Up Girls’ bikini series. It’s crazy how weak my core is post-baby, but I’m committed to working on it regularly.

Wednesday 02/06/19: 1.5 mile run | 1.5 mile run + hip strength + stretching
This workout was EXACTLY the same as Monday, just a tiny bit faster on the run portion.

Thursday 02/07/19: Yoga | Yoga
I pulled up Yoga With Adriene’s “Yoga for Runners” video. It was just what I needed.

Friday 02/08/19: 1.5 mile run | 1.5 mile run + hip strength
Another short, easy run, and a bit of hip strength. I didn’t get to do my whole routine because Vera got fussy.

Saturday 02/08/19: 2 mile run | Rest
We traveled down to my parents’ for an overnight, and I opted to take a rest day with the option to run on Sunday instead.

Sunday 02/10/19: Rest | Rest
Oops. Yeah. After a huge Sunday breakfast of pancakes and mimosas, then the drive home, I didn’t feel like running.

Weekly Mileage: 4.5 miles

Total 2019 Mileage: 53.25

Not a bad start to my 5k training plan. I didn’t get to my “long run” on the weekend, but I’m not too upset about it. I know that distances of up to 2.5 miles feel pretty good right now, and seeing my parents was a good excuse to miss a run.

Did you run long this weekend? How did it go?

Manic Monday Training Recap – 02/04/19

Manic Monday

Monday 01/28/19: 2.25 mile run
I warmed up for half a mile, then ran an ENTIRE MILE at 9:40 pace, then ratcheted it up to a 9:20 pace for a quarter mile, then cooled down for a half mile. I’m slowly but surely getting my speed back.

Tuesday 01/29/19: 1 mile run + hip strength and mobility
Vera was up at 4:30 am and I was a tired mama, so I did the bare minimum. 1 quick mile, followed by some clam shells, reverse clam shells, leg lifts, fire hydrants, and donkey kicks.

Wednesday 01/30/19: 1 mile run + hip strength + stretching
I was up late for rehearsal, so I just stuck to a nice easy pace for this run. I also did some of the same hip exercises from Tuesday, plus a 12 minute split stretch video. Gotta get my flexibility back!

Thursday 01/31/19: 1 mile run + hip strength + stretching
I squeezed in a quick mile for the final day of January, plus the same exercises and stretches as Wednesday.

Friday 02/01/19: 2.25 mile run + stretching
I’ll be honest, guys, the streak almost died today. I was tired and Vera was being super needy and cranky all day. But when she went down for her afternoon nap, I realized I needed some me time, and a run was just the ticket. I did some fast and slow intervals to keep it interesting.

Saturday 02/02/19: 1 mile run
Just a nice, easy mile for Saturday.

Sunday 02/03/19: Rest Day
As you probably saw in Instagram, I quit the streak today due to twinges of discomfort in my right knee.

Weekly Mileage: 8.5

Total 2019 Mileage: 48.75

After 33 days, the streak is done. I’m having a lot of feelings about it, but mostly positive ones. I’ll be talking about it more later this week, but for now I’ll say, I’m very glad I did it, and excited for what’s next!

Manic Monday Training Recap – 01/28/19

Manic Monday

Monday 01/21/19: 2.25 mile run + stretching + rolling
On this run, I kept the pace easy but cranked the incline up one notch every quarter of a mile until I hit 1 mile ,then decreased every quarter of a mile. Then when I was back to “flat,” I did a quarter mile at a faster pace, then cooled down for a quarter mile.

Tuesday 01/22/19: 1 mile run + 30 minute Barre3 workout
Continuing our new Tuesday tradition, my friend Penelope came over for a Barre3 workout. As a bonus, her partner Jaska came along, and they entertained Vera while Penelope and I got our booty burn on. During Vera’s afternoon nap, I snuck downstairs to the treadmill for my mile.

Wednesday 01/23/19: 1 mile run
Vera decided to only nap for a total of 40 minutes today, so I had to just zip through a quick mile while she had quiet time in her crib.

Thursday 01/24/19: 2.75 mile run
My girlfriend Julia came over with her son Leo and watched Vera while I got my longest run in quite some time. Then we visited for a while after, which was lovely. Mamas helping Mamas is amazing.

Friday 01/25/19: 2 mile run + hip mobility/strength
I attempted a bit of speed work for this run–a warm up, then 3 x 400 with 400 recoveries in between. And while laying on the floor with Vera after, I did 30 clam shells, 30 reverse clam shells, and 30 leg lifts on each side.

Saturday 01/26/19: 1 mile run
We had a busy day planned, so I ran immediately after we got up. I kept the pace nice and steady and easy.

Sunday 01/27/19: 1 mile run
Nothing much to say about this run. I just got it done to keep the streak alive.

Weekly Mileage: 11

Total 2019 Mileage: 39.25

Manic Monday Training Recap – 01/21/19

Manic Monday

Monday 01/14/19: 2.25 mile run + plank
My girlfriend Nikki came over and we switched off running and kid wrangling. I managed an entire mile at 10 min/mile pace, which was officially my fastest post-baby mile, woohoo!

Tuesday 01/15/19: 40 Minute Barre3 Booty Workout + 1 mile run
My friend Penelope came over for a Barre3 workout, and holy glutes and hammies, Batman! It definitely made my easy-paced mile afterward feel like WORK. I made sure to roll a bit afterwards.

Wednesday 01/16/19: 1.5 mile run
I was pretty sore and tired from the Barre3 workout, but I wanted to do just a bit more than one mile. This actually loosened me up quite a bit and made me feel better. That and some stretching.

Thursday 01/17/19: 1 mile run + yoga
During my run, I increased the incline one notch every tenth of a mile until I hit incline 2.5, then decreased it one notch every tenth of a mile until I was done. It made the mile fly by. Then I did Yoga With Adriene’s video “Yoga For Hips and Lower Back,” which was just what I needed.

Friday 01/18/19: 2.25 mile run
I pumped a bit of speed in the middle of this run, with .75 miles at 6, and .25 at 6.3. I was WORKING and it felt great.

Saturday 01/19/19: 2 mile run + stretching
I took it nice and easy for 2 miles, then spent a good 10 minutes stretching out after.

Sunday 01/20/19: 1 mile run + core
I felt a little fragile most of the day as I had my first post-baby hangover. Oops! But I still managed to fit in a short core workout and a mile to keep up with the streak.

Weekly Mileage: 10

Total 2019 Mileage: 29.25

Woohoo! 20 full days of streaking! I’m still feeling really good. No aches or pains, and no excessive fatigue. I’m hoping to start getting in some longer runs up to 5k soon, but my time is limited and my pace is slow, so I’m not sure when I’ll get there. In the meantime, I’m just happy to be running again 🙂

What’s your favorite post-run stretch? Mine is pigeon pose.

Manic Monday Training Recap – 01/14/19

Manic Monday

Monday 01/07/19: 2.25 miles
I played with speed a bit on this run to get my legs used to running faster paces again. This was my longest and fastest run in quite a while.

Tuesday 01/08/19: 1 mile + Yoga
Kept it short and easy after Monday’s harder, longer run. I was craving a good stretch, so I pulled up a Yoga with Adriene “Yoga for Flexibility” video. It wasn’t quite what I was looking for, but it still felt good.

Wednesday 01/09/19: 2 miles + stretching
Ben ended up with a snow day, so I was able to take my time running and stretching. It felt great!

Thursday 01/10/19: 1 mile + core
I threw some incline on the treadmill for this mile, and finished off with about 10 minutes of core work including planks, clamshells, side leg lifts, and glute bridges.

Friday 01/11/19: 2 miles + plank + rolling
My girlfriend Nikki came over, and we took turns watching the kids and running on the treadmill. I got two miles in 21 minutes, which felt great. I also did my plank for the day.

Saturday 01/12/19: 1 mile + plank
I squeezed in a quick mile before a day out and about dress shopping.

Sunday 01/13/19: 1 mile + plank
This run was much later than usual, but I still got it done.

Weekly Mileage: 10.25

Total 2019 Mileage: 18.25

Woohoo! Almost two weeks of run streaking down, and I’m still feeling great. If I complete two more runs, I will beat my run streak from 2015. At this point, I honestly feel like streaking through all of January is doable, barring any major illness or injury. Aaaaand now I’m knocking on wood like a crazy person!

How was your weekend? Ours was a good mix of busy and not 🙂

Manic Monday Training Recap – 10/15/18

Manic Monday

Training For Zack’s Place Turkey Trot 5k – Week Two
What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 10/08/18: 2 Easy Miles | 2 Miles at 11:13 Pace
I’m trying not to do too much too soon, so keeping one of my easy runs nice and short seems like a great idea for now.

Tuesday 10/09/18: Core & Arms | Rest
It was a gorgeous day, so we did lots of stuff around the house, but no workouts for me. Oops!

Wednesday 10/10/18: Postnatal Yoga & Tempo Run | 1 up, 1 fast, 1 down
Vera was up nursing every 1.5 hours, so we stayed in bed super late and I missed my yoga class. But after making an appointment with our pediatrician and a hefty dose of caffeine, I went out to run. I was under fueled and overtired but I got it done.

Thursday 10/11/18: Core & Booty | Rest
I developed a bad sore throat overnight, and Vera had another rough night, so I took a full rest day.

Friday 10/12/18: 3 Easy Miles | Rest
Sore throat + baby up between 2:30 and 4:30 = rest day.

Saturday 10/13/18: Rest| Rest
We attended our friends Peter and Lizzie’s wedding, leaving Vera with some friends. It was nice to have a baby-free day for only the second time since she was born!

Sunday 10/14/18: 4 Miles | Rest
I woke up with a full blown head cold, and sat around most of the day with the babe.

Weekly Miles: 5
2018 Miles:
52

This week was completely thrown off by multiple factors: a fussy baby, a head cold, and, TMI alert: a milk blister on my left nipple. Yeah, that’s a thing, and it’s exactly as painful and shitty as it sounds.

I saw my midwife today and got some “Triple Nipple” ointment for my blister, but my head is still full of junk, so I’ve already missed the first run of this week. I’m planning to rest tomorrow as well, and pick up with an interval run for “Workout Wednesday” if I’m feeling better. Being sick and having a small baby to care for is no joke. Thank god Ben is home on paternity leave, otherwise I’d be in a lot worse shape.

Manic Monday Training Recap – 10/08/18

Manic Monday

Training For Zack’s Place Turkey Trot 5k – Week One
What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 10/01/18: 3 Easy Miles | Rest
Vera and I had a busy day running errands and then Ben had to work late, so I wasn’t able to get a run in.

Tuesday 10/02/18: Core & Arms | 15 Minute Postnatal Pilates & TIU Bikini Arms
I had hoped to make up Monday’s run but it poured rain all day, so I contented myself with some living room strength work instead.

Wednesday 10/03/18: Postnatal Yoga & 4 x 400 | 4 x 400
My lactation consultant came for a visit due to some supply issues I’ve been having, so I didn’t make it to yoga. This was my first “hard” run since Vera and it felt good but, well, hard.

Thursday 10/04/18: Core & Booty | Rest
Vera just isn’t sleeping well right now, and the exhaustion was real. I was basically in survival mode.

Friday 10/05/18: 3 Easy Miles | Rest
I had plans Friday night AND Ben worked late, so no run for me.

Saturday 10/06/18: 3.5 Miles | Rest
Another rough night with Vera meant I was too tired to do anything other than get through our plans for the day.

Sunday 10/07/18: Core & Legs | 3.5 Miles
We had a decent night of sleep, so I dragged myself out for my longest post-baby run without walk breaks. It was kind of a slog, but I’m glad I got it done.

Weekly Miles: 6.5
2018 Miles:
 49

Well. Training for my first post-baby race is off to an inauspicious start. I only did two of four scheduled runs, didn’t make it to yoga, and only did one day of strength work. Still though, two runs is better than no runs. And if nothing else, I know I can at least cover the distance at my race without walking.

Manic Monday Training Recap – 10/01/18

Manic Monday

Postpartum Recovery – 09/24/18 – 09/30/18

Monday 09/24/28: Rest
Continuing the trend from last week’s recap, today was a rest day. Between another rough night with Vera and being out of the house for a huge chunk of the day due to baby yoga, I didn’t manage a workout, and I’m totally cool with it.

Tuesday 09/25/18: Postnatal Core + Tone It Up Bikini Arms
It was a chilly, dreary day, so rather than running, I did some strength work. It’s humbling to realize how much strength I’ve lost this year, but I’m committed to getting back at it.

Wednesday 09/26/18: 75 Minute Postnatal Yoga Class
My yoga studio opened a new location that’s about 20 minutes closer to where we live, so I’m PSYCHED. My lower back has been incredibly sore lately so it felt wonderful to get a good stretch in.

Thursday 09/27/18: Rest
No excuses, just didn’t get it done.

Friday 09/28/18: Rest
See Thursday.

Saturday 09/29/18: 5k Run
2:1 run/walk intervals. Perfect running weather. Happy runner.

Sunday 09/30/18: Rest
We had a busy day of visiting Grammie, grocery shopping, and wandering around the Underhill Harvest Market.

Not the week I had hoped for, but it is what it is. This week is supposed to be week one of training for the Turkey Trot 5k, and I’m a little anxious. Training plans and I generally don’t work out that well, and now that I have a baby I suspect they’ll work even less well. Still, all I can do is try.

Manic Monday Training Recap – 09/24/18

Manic Monday

Postpartum Recovery – Week of 09/17/18 – 09/23/18

Monday 09/17/18: Rest
I had hoped to run when Ben got home, but we ended up having dinner with my in-laws instead. They’re about to head off on a month-long trip to Italy, so it was nice to spend some time with them.

Tuesday 09/18/18: 75 minute postnatal yoga class
Once again, Vera was a rock star and let me get most of a workout in without fussing.

Wednesday 09/19/18: 5k run/walk
I was able to sneak in a quick 5k after Ben got home from work. I knew I had a limited amount of time because he wanted to go visit his Grammie, so I picked up the pace a bit from what I’ve been doing. It felt challenging but oh so good to push it a little.

Thursday 09/20/18: Rest
We had a rough night with Vera (thank you, three month growth spurt), and it was all I could do to get through the day.

Friday 09/21/18: Rest
Another rough night = another rest day

Saturday 09/22/18: 5k run/walk
Using 2:1 intervals, this was my fastest post-baby 5k yet. Running more than a minute at a time feels challenging, but I love it!

Sunday 09/23/18: Rest
Vera has really been giving us a run for our money, and after yet another rough night, I couldn’t force myself to do anything other than necessary tasks.

Unfortunately this week didn’t really go the way I wanted it to, but that’s life with an infant. I’m just grateful for what I was able to do.

Going forward in my postpartum fitness journey, I really want to make sure that I’m balancing cardio, strength, and mobility. I once worked with a trainer who said that fitness is like a stool, and cardio, strength, and mobility are the three legs. If you focus on any one area more than the others, you don’t have a very good seat. My intention is to do postpartum core work every day, and a short, focused strength workout each day that I’m not running. And of course, stretching and rolling regularly. But as I said above, life with an infant is challenging and unpredictable, so we’ll see how it goes.

Manic Monday Training Recap – 09/17/18

Manic Monday

Postpartum Recovery – Week of 09/10/18 – 09/16/18

Monday 09/10/18: Rest
I decided to take a full rest day to give my knees a chance to feel better.

Tuesday 09/11/18: 75 minute postnatal yoga
Vera and I hit up a lovely postnatal yoga class together. She was a champ and I got most of a workout in.

Wednesday 09/12/18: Rest
I wanted to give my knees another day to rest up after the pain I experienced this weekend, so I took a full rest day.

Thursday 09/13/18: 2.5 mile stroller walk
After Ben got home from work, we went for a family walk on the rail trail. It was a lovely evening, and felt great.

Friday 09/14/18: TIU Lift and Tone Booty Workout + 1.5 mile stroller walk
I kind of hate the TIU Girls, but I have to admit that their workouts are short and effective. In the afternoon, Vera and I took a walk on the rail trail and met up at the playground with my friend Nikki and her son Kalamack.

Saturday 09/15/18: 3.15 mile run/walk
I switched to 1:1 run/walk intervals today, and am happy to report zero knee pain and one happy runner!

Sunday 09/16/18: Rest
I was tired and sore after two days of decent workouts, so I took another rest day. Ben and I went to the Grand Point North music festival and left Vera with her grandparents for the firs time. It was hard, but wonderful.

I’m proud of myself for listening to my body and taking the rest I needed after noticing knee pain, rather than trying to push it. My body simply isn’t as fit as it used to be, and I need to give it time. I’m feeling pretty much 100% today other than a bit of DOMS, so I hope to go for a run/walk when Ben gets home from work tonight.

When’s the last time you went to a concert?
