Officially Kicking Off Postpartum Fitness

Rather than having a pity party over what I can’t do (if you missed it, check out my six week postpartum update here), I’m choosing to focus on what I can do: walking and yoga. While it’s not exactly half marathon training and CrossFit, it’s what I’ve got, and I’m grateful for it. I hope to be back running and lifting fairly soon, but I need to be smart about my postpartum recovery and not push myself into injury.

For the next few weeks, it’s my goal to go to yoga at least twice a week, as I still have my summer unlimited pass at my studio through the end of August. I also hope to walk at least two miles four days a week. This may be a bit ambitious, as Ben is going back to school on Thursday, but thanks to the new paths our neighbor brush hogged for us, it should be attainable.

I’m officially starting this postpartum journey with a body that’s eight pounds heavier and a hell of a lot squishier and less muscular than it was this time last year. I have taken some photos and measurements to help me track progress, but I will not be posting them here. They are for me personally because I don’t want to depend on the numbers on the scale to help me see changes.

As I resume “training,” I hope to bring back Manic Monday training recap posts on Mondays, but with the caveat that I’m still not sure how often I’ll be able to blog. You may get several weeks at once, and that’s just what life is right now.

Back to Yoga!

A few months before Ben and I moved back from Boston, I bought a Groupon for 10 classes at a local hot yoga studio. I had been a sporadic practitioner in the past, and was curious about hot yoga. My friend and gym buddy Erin bought one too, and we ended up going together on a semi-regular basis. I LOVED it. The heat helped me to be so much more flexible, and really made me feel like I was getting an extra sweaty workout.

After we moved back to Vermont, I intended to go back to my old studio, Evolution Yoga. Unfortunately, their prices had gone up, and we were broke, so yoga took a back burner. I tried to do some basic poses at home, but I’m just not a solo yoga person–I need someone to tell me what to do. I tried some videos on YouTube, but nothing really fit. And the schedule for yoga classes at my gym just doesn’t work with my current work/rehearsal schedule. And so a year and a half passed with little to no yoga.

The past few weeks have been really crazy–lots of aerobic activities at rehearsals, lots of new strength training classes, and some running. As a result, I’ve been pretty sore and overtired. Yesterday I decided that I simply NEEDED some yoga in my life. I arranged to leave work early to catch a Community Class (by donation) at Evolution.

If I remember correctly, this studio was once a laudromat. It’s now a beautiful space full of light. I didn’t take any pictures cause I personally just feel weird bringing my cell phone into the studio and taking pictures. But yeah, light wood floors, lots of windows, fun colors, and white Christmas lights. Lovely.

I snagged a prime spot by the window wall and introduced myself to the instructor, John. My co-worker Kari had recommended John’s class very highly, and I wasn’t disappointed. He started class with a little anecdote/story, and used the theme of seeing and being open to new perspectives as a theme for the class; he touched upon it several times throughout, and I really liked the consistency. Though it was my first class in a long time, I didn’t find it too challenging. I think because it’s a community class, it’s geared toward being accessible to a large cross-section of practitioners; there was actually a woman in (what I guessed to be) her early 70’s, Louise, who was VERY new to yoga, and she did great!

The only bummer was that during savasana (my FAVORITE part of class), Louise’s cell phone went off really loudly. She had to scramble through her bag to stop the noise, and then approximately two minutes later, it beeped really loudly that she had a voicemail. *sigh* Cell phones do NOT belong in the studio!

Other than that, I just felt so DAMN HAPPY the whole class. My inner monologue was something like Oh yeah, THIS is why I like yoga. Oh, this feels so good. Yay, I love this pose! Hey look, I’m sort of flexible! This is great! I was also happy to notice that I’m significantly stronger than I used to be–poses like Warrior 2 that used to make me shaky and make my legs ache are much easier to settle into.

I think I’m going to suck it up and pay to go once a week. John teaches a Sunday morning class that will fit in perfectly before rehearsal, and will hopefully help to put me in a more relaxed and happy mood before getting all wound up at rehearsal.
