Friday Free-For-All

Remember that commercial I shot a couple of weeks ago? It’s live! It’s been airing during the Olympics and I’ve had a bunch of friends texting me about it. It’s a SUPER quick segment (literally only 15 seconds long), but I had a lot of fun filming. If you’re interested, you can check it out by clicking here.

Ben and I did something unusual for Valentine’s Day. We bought each other a couch! We’ve never really been super into the forced celebration of Valentine’s Day, but we decided it would be fun to buy a real couch for our new house instead of spending money on junk we don’t need. We’ve been using an old, lumpy futon that we got free from his parents, and it was time to upgrade.  We ended up investing in a really nice Flexsteel sectional. They were having a 20% off sale and the frame comes with a lifetime warranty, so we feel really good about it. And there’s a CHAISE on one end! Helloooo, relaxation! Unfortunately, it may take up to 10 weeks to actually be delivered. Boo.

I went to prenatal yoga this week! Real talk: I haven’t been to CrossFit since December, and I haven’t run/walked/otherwise worked out since early January. Pregnancy is rough guys! But I’m starting to feel a bit gross, so I’m making a commitment to get my body moving more, and prenatal yoga is just the ticket! I’ve been experiencing a lot of round ligament pain, and things have been just a wee bit stressful lately, so it felt incredible to just relax and stretch out my body.

We celebrated my four year anniversary at work this week. Holy crap! I simply can’t believe it’s been that long! The customary anniversary gift is a nice bottle of wine, but since I’m preggo, I got a really fancy bottle of olive oil instead. This was super handy, as we didn’t have any cooking oil at the new house yet. Even though I’m really happy with my decision to stay home and raise our daughter after she’s born, I’m going to miss the heck out of my colleagues.

How long have you been at your job? Do they do anniversary celebrations?

Not much news on the house front. We submitted an amended offer that included a one month housing contingency, and the seller’s team has until 5 pm today to sign. I’m not holding my breath right now. Having them sign would be a great first step, but I remain skeptical that they’ll be able to find suitable housing for the seller in one month. You never know, but I’m just not letting myself get excited right now. Patience and calm are key.

I am pretty much living for Thanksgiving break right now. As usual, I have a four day weekend, and I can’t wait to just chill out, eat delicious food, drink delicious drinks, and enjoy family time. Ben and I alternate Thanksgiving celebrations between our families, and this is our year to be with Ben’s family. This means we get to just hang out at home and not worry about packing, driving, and sleeping in someone else’s bed. Perfection!

Now that it’s dark at 5 pm and after work runs are off the table, I’m enjoying the recumbent bike at home again. It had been collecting dust for a while, but now it’s my best option for staying active on days when I just don’t feel like going to CrossFit. And since it’s at home, I can use wi-fi and watch my shows on Netflix, which helps the time go by.

Our 3rd wedding anniversary is next week! Since it’s Thanksgiving week, we are going to celebrate early by going out to dinner on Sunday night. I received a gift card to a great local restaurant for my work on the company’s United Way campaign, so dinner shouldn’t cost us a dime. Score!

We got three inches of snow last night! Of course, our totals are somewhat elevated due to the fact that we live basically on the side of a mountain, but it was SO lovely to wake up to. Now if the rest of the area would just catch up! I’d much rather look at snow than mud and sticks.

How excited are you for Thanksgiving?

I just had my three year anniversary at work. I honestly can’t believe it’s already been that long. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but I’m very lucky to have the job I do. Sure, it’s not a field or subject I’m passionate about, but the pay is great and the people are awesome. Also, I’m now fully vested in the 401(k) program, so, yay for retirement planning!

Long weekend ahead! We have Monday off for Presidents’ Day and I couldn’t be more stoked. Of course I will still have rehearsal and CrossFit and such, but it will be nice to have an extra weekend day for fun and productivity. And sleep. Sweet, sweet sleep.

I’m fighting a head cold and I hate it. Ben was sick all of last weekend and most of this week, and I can feel my body starting to succumb. I’ve got a dry, swollen throat, and some nasal congestion. I’m doing my absolute best not to give in, and fighting back with lots of tea, sinus irrigation (love my neti pot!), my desktop humidifier, and resting as much as possible. Which isn’t much because I’m stupid busy. But I’m trying. I simply don’t have time to be sick right now. My audition for Dogfight the musical is next weekend, and we leave for the Bahamas a week from Monday. No. Sickness. Here.

Do you have a long weekend too? Any fun plans?

Two day work week next week! Ben and I are travelling with his parents to his mom’s sister’s husband’s family farm (say that 5 times fast!) in Starrucca, PA. It will be a lot of driving, but I think it will be a lot of fun too. And of course, I never turn down a short work week. My office gives us Thanksgiving and Black Friday off anyway, so I used my last vacation day for the year to take Wednesday off as well. I was hoping to find a Turkey Trot in the area, but no dice. I’ll have to just go for a pre-Turkey run on my own.

Our one year wedding anniversary is Sunday. I truly can’t believe it’s already been a year since we said “I do.” It’s been a crazy busy year, full of lots of changes and adventures, and I’m so glad to be sharing it all with Ben.

I will be participating in the Runner’s World Holiday Run Streak. This is something that I wanted to do last year, but I hurt my foot and was out of commission for 6 weeks. It was one of my goals for 2015, and I’m actually pretty excited to get started. I’ve never attempted a streak before, but I plan to approach this in a very cautious and realistic way. I will be focusing big-time on recovery efforts like stretching and rolling, and if at any point I feel overtired or like I might be approaching injury, I will back off no problem. Being healthy and whole for the start of marathon training in January is much more important than an arbitrary running streak. But If I make sure I have lots of low mileage days in there and stay vigilant about recovery, I’m sure I’ll be ok.

Tonight will be my first night “off” this week. Every single night this week, I’ve had a commitment; Monday I had my sister over for dinner and movies, Tuesday I had a rehearsal, Wednesday was tap class, and Thursday night I had a babysitting gig. Tonight after work, I may (or may not) run, and then I will put on my PJs, pour myself a few fingers of bourbon, and park it in front of the TV with a bowl of popcorn. Ahhhh, heaven.

Did you have a busy week?

Anyone else planning to do the #RWRunStreak?

Friday Free-For-All (Sixteen)

Welcome to Friday Free-For-All, where I talk about anything and everything on my mind.  This is usually just a great big brain dump, so brace yourselves!

Today is Ben’s and my 6th anniversary!  Funny story, we just sort of started “hanging out” casually, and never really had a discussion of “you are my boyfriend/you are my girlfriend,” it just kind of happened organically.  So when we looked back, we realized we didn’t have an official first date or day to celebrate our anniversary, so we just picked a day sort of around the time we started hanging out 🙂  So tonight, I will run my five miles, shower, change, cheer Ben on at his broom ball game, and then we’re going out for a late dinner.  I am intensely grateful to have such a smart, caring, and goofy life partner.

We went indoor rock climbing last night.  There’s a really great climbing gym, Petra Cliffs about 2 minutes from my office, and we have friends who are REALLY into it, so Ben and I met them there last night.  For $25, you get a “beginner’s package,” which includes a climbing pass, harness and shoe rental, and an introduction to the belay system from one of the staff.  Guys, this is a KILLER full-body workout.  Yes, you use your arms a lot, and in ways you typically don’t (hello grip strength and forearms), but you also need your core to help you move around, and your legs are instrumental in pushing yourself up.  I was exhausted after only an hour there (which was probably only about 20 minutes total climbing time).  We had lots of fun, so we will most likely be going back.

I’m taking part in the #rocktoberfit photo challenge.  I found this on Esther’s blog, but she let me know the original idea came from Jess at Operation Skinny Jeans.  I’m almost done with my #100happydays photo challenge, and I wanted to start a new one to keep me going.  I really like the idea of taking and posting at least one photo a day, so it’s nice to have something to work towards.  If you want to join in, here’s the graphic.  Just use the hashtag #rocktoberfit and tag @operationskinnyjeans

We are going to an Oktoberfest party on Saturday.  This is an annual party held by one of Ben’s mom’s coworkers, and is apparently a very good time.  I’m excited to spend some time outdoors and drink some beers 🙂

I also have to make up my 9 mile run this weekend.  I think I’m going to haul my butt to the local high school track and run in circles.  There’s some nice foliage in that area, and I’m hoping that no teams will be practicing early on a Sunday morning.  I’m feeling pretty good about this run; hopefully it goes as well as I’m imagining it will.

Are you doing any photo challenges right now?

Have you gone to an Oktoberfest celebration this fall?
