Friday Free-For-All

My favorite black leggings have several holes in them. I know, I know, what a first world problem, right? I’ve had them for going on three years now so it’s not like this is unexpected, but I wear these leggings multiple times a week. I got them when I was working at Athleta and still had a sweet discount. I can’t really afford to replace them right now, and I’ve never found a basic black legging that I liked as much. Not having an income is a huge bummer.

I had my first rehearsal for the Disney princess show I’m in on Tuesday. I’m very, very excited for this show, but also feeling a bit nervous because I haven’t been singing regularly for a while, so I’m rusty. Add to that the fact that I’m singing one of the most well-known and challenging songs in the Disney universe (Let it Go), and I’m a bit of a mess. I’m just trying to give myself time to get back in vocal shape and not freak out.

Vera had her six-month well child visit this week. She’s actually already almost seven months old, but our pediatrician is VERY popular and her schedule books up quickly. Our little girl is still a peanut–she’s 17th percentile for weight and 19th for height. Otherwise, though, she’s healthy and thriving and that’s what matters. She’s hitting all of the developmental milestones she should, so we’re happy.

I’m trying to “train” my hair to go longer between washes. One of the runners I follow on IG mentioned this in her stories, so I clicked over to the hairdresser she said she was following. This woman has gone up to 33 days without washing her hair. THIRTY THREE! And it still looked good! I’m not saying I want to go that long between washes (and with my fine hair and greasy scalp, I doubt I could), but right now I have to wash every other day. It’s just not very convenient when I have a lot of hair that takes a while to dry, it’s cold and wintry, and I have a small baby to take care of. If I could get to a place where I wash every three or four days, that would be ideal. Let’s see how it goes! I’m about to get very friendly with dry shampoo. And possibly hats, haha!

Weekend Update: Mardi Gras and Freezing Cold

Happy Monday, friends. Winter returned to the Northeast with a vengeance this weekend. Temps were in the negatives all weekend, and now we’re supposed to get a foot or more of snow this week. Eep! Let’s take a look at what I got up to this weekend.

Friday
CrossFit–>rehearsal–>home as usual. Everybody was in bed by the time I got home so I just went straight to bed.

Saturday
I got up around 8 to cram a few things in before heading into town for Mardi Gras. Yes, we celebrate Mardi Gras in Vermont. Yes, we do it on a Saturday. In March. We’re special. I know.

I cleaned the bathroom and neatened up some stuff in our room, then got dressed and headed into town to meet my friend Brita for a drink before the parade. Then, we did some pre-game drinking at my friends’ salon right down the street. I may have had one more drink than completely necessary, and ended up on the front page of the Burlington Free Press website singing my face off while everyone else is posing nicely for the camera. I blame the Hamilton soundtrack…

After the parade, we went to the Hilton Garden Inn, where I did NOT have anything to drink, and hung out chatting and sobering up for a while. I was meeting Ben and some of our other friends for dinner and to see Logan so I left a little before 5. I absolutely housed half of a buffalo chicken pizza, chugged some water, and felt a lot better. Logan was pretty good. I honestly didn’t really know what it was about other than Wolverine, but I liked it a lot. Much grittier than other X-Men movies.

By the time the movie was over, I was exhausted. Ben and I went home, watched one episode of The Crown, and I passed out.

Sunday
Sunday was another early morning for me, because I wanted to hit up the Athleta friends and family sale before rehearsal. I got a new pair of capris, with POCKETS, and a pair of shorts for summer. About half my wardrobe at this point is from Athleta, and I’m not mad about it.

Rehearsal was a long one. We’re at the point now where we’re putting larger chunks of the show together, which is always difficult and time-consuming. I was tired and cranky, but we got through it and I was home a little after five. I didn’t do any meal prep yesterday, which is likely to bite me in the ass later this week, but I think I can get it done tomorrow night. Fingers crossed.

And now it’s Monday. My first full week at work since coming back from vacation. And we’re in for a huge snowstorm tomorrow. Ugh. Bring on all the coffee.

Friday Free-For-All – 02/24/17

As of 4:30 pm today, I’m officially on vacation until March 8. Woooooohooooo! I have been waiting for this trip for forever, and I can’t believe it’s finally here. We don’t fly out until early Monday morning, so I still have all weekend to do laundry and pack and get myself together. I only ever take carry-on luggage, so packing for 10 days might be challenging, but I’m fairly confident in my abilities. I also think we will have access to laundry facilities, which will make it that much simpler.

I have to go bathing suit shopping this weekend. Blerg. I’ve been wearing the same one piece bathing suit (which was also a hand-me-down from a friend), for close to four years now, and it’s less than inspiring. And the two-piece that I’ve had for 6+ years no longer contains my chest. Being a busty girl makes bathing suit shopping REALLY hard, but thankfully, Athleta has some good bra-sized swim that I think I can make work. I just wish I’d gotten a new bathing suit when I still had that sweet employee discount…

Audition tomorrow. Eep! I know I said that I was mostly thinking of this as a practice audition since I don’t anticipate getting the role I want, but after listening to the music and thinking about it a lot, I’m definitely fully emotionally invested in the outcome of this audition. Crap. I feel like I’m as prepared as I can possibly be, and I’m just trying to remember that NOT getting cast will mean a relaxing summer where I actually get to have a life and do fun things. It’s basically a win-win, right? Right.

Because I will be in the Bahamas for 8 days and likely not have any wi-fi or internet access, I probably will not be posting while I’m gone. Apparently some of the bars and restaurants have wi-fi, so if I can, I’ll be posting to Instagram, but otherwise, it will be radio silence until I get back. Have a great week, everyone! ❤

 

Friday Free-For-All – 06/17/16

I’ve decided to get rid of my fancy gym membership. It was great while it lasted, but I haven’t been to any gym location or any classes since… March? Yeah, early March. I’m basically paying $40 a month on the off chance that I get really motivated to start going to Body Pump classes. Which I don’t foresee happening any time soon. I still want treadmill access during the winter, though, so I’ll be going back to my good old standby, Planet Fitness. It’s not great, but it’s cheap, and I can use a treadmill when I need to. Then I can use the $30 a month in savings for other things that I actually do, like my yoga passes, or spin classes.

Ben is officially on summer break. I can’t lie, I’m burning with envy. I get up in the morning to get ready for work and he’s still in dreamland. I turn out the lights at the responsible adult hour of 10:30, and he’s still up binge-watching Parks and Rec and having a beer. Being married to a teacher is tough when it comes to vacations. He’s not planning to just sit on his butt all summer, but right now, I’m super jealous of his free and easy schedule.

Not much improvement on the tailbone. The pain level has remained fairly level, and it’s now been a week since the initial fall. I’m starting to think that it might be a good idea to consult a professional just in case there’s something more going on. The good news is, I have my annual physical on Thursday, so I can discuss it with my doctor then.

I’ve already made my first Athleta purchase. I know I said I need to be strong and not spend all my extra cash on clothes, but this deal was too good to pass up. Employees receive a 70% discount on any merchandise that’s considered “damaged.” I got this Trekkie skort for $19.20 just because the drawstring was broken. It’s cute and functional and perfect for summer. #noregrets

Friday Free-For-All – 06/10/16

I had my first training shift at Athleta on Wednesday. So far, so good. The people are great, the environment is dynamic, and the discount is BALLER. My second “training” session will be tonight, which basically involves me trying on ALLTHECLOTHES. The theory is that in order to properly sell and represent the brand, I have to know how it feels, how it fits, and how to style it. I’m excited to try on all the pretty things! Of course, this is probably going to make me want to buy all the things, but I need to stay strong.

Ben and I are about to adult super hard and go see a financial planner. Yes, I work for a financial planning firm, but I want to keep my personal life separate from work as much as possible. We’re trying to get really serious about buying a house and starting a family sometime in the next year, so we need to get our shit together. For people our age, we’re actually pretty savvy (I think), but we need some professional guidance for the next steps.

I did something stupid last night. I went roller skating with friends. It was great. I was having fun. I was doing well. Then I tried to exit the rink a little too quickly, my legs went out from under me, and I went down HARD on my tailbone. I don’t think it’s broken, but it’s pretty painful. Walking, stairs, and standing up/sitting down hurt. Sudden movements hurt. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to run at all the next couple of days, which is very frustrating. Aside from being in pain, I feel pretty stupid for not being more careful.  It’s hard sometimes to remember that I’m not a kid anymore, and stuff like roller skating should be approached with a little more caution.

I officially have a part-time job at Athleta! I filled out paperwork on Wednesday and start training next week. I have absolutely loved everyone I’ve met at the store so far, and I’m excited to start learning. Also, I get a pretty sweet discount, which will make it really hard to *actually* save extra the money I’m earning to put toward student loans.

I relinquished my Nuunbassadorship. Unfortunately, they reformulated the product late last year, and I’m really not a fan. Firstly, they added Stevia, which I HATE. I actively dislike the taste of Stevia, and it totally ruined the flavor for me. Secondly, each tube used to have 12 tabs; now each tube only has 10 tabs, even though they cost the same. I loathe companies who start downsizing their products and still charging the same price. I get that prices change, but I think there’s something inherently dishonest in charging the same amount for less product (I’m looking at you, 16 oz bottles of soda-I want my 20 oz!). I’d rather just have them increase the price for the same size product. Is that crazy?

I went for my first post-marathon run today. My quads were pretty sore for a few days, but other than that, no issues, so I decided to take it to the new-to-me section of the rec path that I discovered during my walk yesterday. It was pretty hot and humid, and it took a while to warm up, but I’m happy to report that everything seems to be back to normal, so I’m ready to get back to regular running next week.

House sitting again. Ben and I will be house sitting for some family friends out in Underhill starting next Wednesday, and going until June 2. Obviously, being away from our own home and kitties so much is not ideal, but we’re really trying hard to work our “side hustles” now that Ben’s job situation has become so tenuous (we still don’t know exactly how many class sections he’ll be teaching and what his salary will be). We really want to start seriously considering buying a house or land to build on, which means we need to build up a down payment. Which means house sitting, babysitting, and both of us possibly getting part time jobs. Speaking of which…

I may be working a few hours a week at Athleta this summer. My friend Chris is the store manager, and they’re looking for extra part-time help. I put in an official application and had an interview this week, and I’m still waiting to get the official word. I think I’d really like working at Athleta, I think the extra income would be great, and I think building a relationship with them could be really good once I start having kids and maybe only work part-time.

I put my money where my mouth is and bought a 10-class pass to my hot yoga studio. At first I was sort of reluctant to pony up the cash, but when I thought about how much I’ve enjoyed going these last few weeks, and realized that laying out the cash in one lump sum would save me $5.50 per class, I bit the bullet. I’ve added buying a pass every other month as a permanent item in my budget, so I think I’ll be able to keep up with it. I’m excited to see how continuing my practice will affect my running and recovery!

THE TRUCK IS FIXED! Hallelujah and praise little baby Jesus, I have my own car again! I can’t tell you what a relief it is to know that if and when I need it, I have a car available to me. I still plan to walk to work most days, but it will be amazing to be able to run errands on lunch or immediately after work, get where I need to go, and not have to coordinate schedules with Ben every single day. FREEDOOOMMM!

You can read more about this run in this post, but the long and short of it is that I hurt myself attempting my long run, and I’m not sure how. I’m still trying to assess possible causes.

Tuesday 04/26/16: Rest | Rest
My left quad was still bothering me quite a bit, so I just did a bit of gentle rolling and tried not to walk around too much. I started feeling a sore throat before bed, but figured it was just allergies messing with me. FORESHADOWING! DUN DUN DUNNNNN.

Wednesday 04/27/16: Ladder Workout | Rest
Left quad was still tender, though not as bad as Tuesday. Once again I did some light rolling and a bit of gentle stretching, but otherwise just tried to leave it alone. My throat was REALLY sore all day, but just tried to put it out of my mind and sooth it with tea and salt water gargles. At bedtime though, I decided to take my temperature just for giggles, and wouldn’t you know it? I had a fever. 😐

Thursday 04/28/16: Active Rest/StrengthRest
I didn’t sleep at all Wednesday night because my throat was still sore, and I still had a fever when I got up for work, but I went in anyway. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep, and I needed to provide coverage because half of our team is away at a conference. I left as early as I could, went home, and went to bed.

Friday 04/29/16: 4 x 8005k @ 11:31 pace
I took the morning off on Friday to get some sleep. I was so congested all night that sleep was difficult, but it started to break up in the morning, so I wanted to sleep while I could. After work I just got out there to get my legs moving again for an easy 5k, and then I immediately changed into my PJs and spent the rest of the evening relaxing before an early bedtime.

This was the first run with Athleta that I got to “pace.” Unfortunately, attendance wasn’t super great; only the other pacer and her husband showed up, but they were really nice and we had a good run.

I might post more about this later this week, but for now I’ll just say, that was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I’m so fucking glad it’s over.

And that’s mostly a wrap. My left quad and right foot issues came back with a vengeance during that 20 miler, so Coach Suz has me doing a modified long-ish taper to give everything time to heal up and get ready for the marathon. I’m still working on the shoe issue, because it has become apparent that I can’t wear the Mirage 5s for the marathon without seriously hurting myself and/or jeopardizing my ability to finish.

Friday Free-For-All – 04/15/16

Spring Break, baby! As of 4:30 this afternoon, Ben and I will officially be on vacation. We will be taking off on an East Coast Friends and Family road trip. We’ve planned stops in New Jersey, DC, and North Carolina, and we couldn’t be more excited. The timing works out perfectly that we’ll actually be arriving in NJ for a friend’s birthday, and the longest stretch of driving we’ll have to do in any given day is 6 hours. I’ll try to schedule some posts to go up while I’m gone, but I’ll mostly be away from computers.

I’m teaming up with Athleta and Vermont City Marathon to host a few training runs in the weeks leading up to VCM. As you already know, I’m running and promoting VCM on behalf of BibRave, but I was contacted by Athleta because they are working with the “New to 26.2” first-time marathon training program that VCM is offering. Each Saturday a group will be meeting at Athleta for a 4-6 mile training run, and I get to be one of the “leaders.” I’m excited because a) I LOVE Athleta, b) I’ve really been missing group runs these last few months, and c) it’s a perfect cross-promotion opportunity. I’d like to say right out that if it weren’t for the fact that my friend Chris is the general manager of my local Athleta, this probably wouldn’t be happening, but I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth!

I FINALLY got my Saucony Mirage 5s this weekend. I have run in them a couple of times so far, and while they are definitely a bit different than the 4s, I think they’re going to work out just fine. Hallelujah! Now to stock up on them before they completely disappear so that I don’t have to deal with this shoe drama again for a loooong time…

Athleta Church Street Grand Opening Party

Athleta has finally opened a store near me!  I’ve always loved the look of their apparel, but buying clothes online is always a crap shoot.  You pay for shipping, and then the item doesn’t fit, and you have to pay additional shipping to send it back.  No fun at all.  But now, I’ll be able to try on all of the lovely athletic apparel I want without paying for shipping!

My college buddy, Chris, is the General Manager of the store, so I got an invitation to attend the Grand Opening party last night (this sounds really cool and exclusive, but they were letting people in without tickets; whomp whomp).  Upon entering the store, I was handed a coupon for a free yoga class at a local studio, and this pretty little hair tie/bracelet with the Athleta slogan “Power to the She” on it.  I love me some free swag!  They were also offering complimentary wine, and different juice/smoothie samples.

I told one of the (very friendly) employees that I have a running/fitness blog and asked if it was OK to take pictures in the store; she gave the affirmative.  Unfortunately, the store was IMMENSELY crowded.  I’m not sure they were limiting the number of people allowed inside, and it was difficult to move around.  It was also really hot inside, and I started sweating immediately.

I spent about 25 minutes wandering around with my complimentary white wine and coveting everything I saw.  I could seriously spend an entire paycheck in here and not bat an eye.  Chris recommended the Relay Capris, which have an oversize zipper pocket at the back that’s supposed to fit smartphones, reflective detailing, and wide cuffs that are supposed to prevent the legs from sliding around.  They come in lots of great colors and prints, but since I’m broke as heck right now, I held off.  I don’t think I’ll be able to resist for long, though.  Does anyone else prefer athletic apparel to just about any other clothing options? #leggings4life

Another reason I’m so excited about Athleta opening in my town is that they offer all kinds of great in-store activities like fitness classes and group runs FOR FREE!  I also found out that they offer free hemming on pants, capris and skirts so that you get the best fit possible.  Um, hello?  Who does that?  Well, Athleta does!  And last and certainly not least, they offer a Fitness Professional Discount, so all you certified run coaches, personal trainers, and group fitness instructors can get 30% off full-priced merchandise in store!  Woo!
