Friday Free-For-All

Woohoo, spring break! Ben’s break begins today, and we couldn’t be happier about it. The last few weeks have been a bit of a slog for both of us, and we’re ready to have some family time. Also, ALL OF THE PROJECTS. We need to get our garden prep going and take care of some stuff around the house that we’ve been neglecting.

Sleep training, round two. We’re also planning to use this break as an opportunity to try to give up overnight feeds with Vera. At her age, it’s not at all necessary, but it’s become a habit that is messing with our sleep and driving me a bit crazy. I haven’t had a night of uninterrupted sleep for almost 10 months and it’s wearing on me. I’m not at all looking forward to the process, but I’m looking forward to the results.

My husband is a cookie gobbler. I bake a lot, because homemade treats are cheaper and generally better tasting than store bought. Recently, I had to start dividing up cookies into “mine” and “yours” batches, because otherwise Ben ended up eating twice as many cookie as I did, and I was not happy about it. Seriously. That man can eat four enormous cookies in one go, whereas I like to make mine last a bit longer. So now we have separate containers.

My race is three weeks away. I’m getting very excited to race again. Unfortunately, fundraising is going a bit slower this year than in years past. A large portion of donations used to come from my work colleagues, and now that I’m not working anymore, well, those donations aren’t happening. I still have time, and I still have some family who are planning to contribute, but I don’t think I’m going to hit $1000 this year. If by chance you feel moved to contribute, the link to my fundraising page is here.

Do you have a spouse who eats a disproportionate amount of treats?

Friday Free-For-All

We’re finally all healthy after last week’s illness. I was the first to go down, and I honestly thought Ben and Vera might be spared. But then Ben and V both woke up sick on Saturday morning, and there went that theory. This week involved lots of cleaning and lots of laundry to banish germs, but I think we’re in the clear. Now hopefully that’s the last round of illness for a while! Come on, spring!

I’ve been slacking with blog stuff lately. I have two product review posts that I just can’t seem to find the energy to finish. Once again, I’m feeling very “meh” about the whole blog situation. My domain renewal is coming up and I honestly can’t decide whether or not to renew. We’re on a really strict budget right now and while $26 doesn’t seem like a lot, that’s a quarter of my discretionary spending for the month of April. It feels like maybe not the right choice, especially when I haven’t exactly been churning out blog posts.

I’m attempting a sourdough starter. Sourdough is my favorite kind of bread, but it’s kind of fiddly. You have to make or acquire a “starter,” which is basically a colony of wild yeast, and use that in your recipes. It’s a living thing that you have to “feed” and take care of, which is a lot of pressure, haha. But it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and since I’ve been baking a lot of yeast breads lately, I figured, why not? I’ll let you know how it goes.

Have you ever made sourdough bread?

Still no baby! I know you’re all anxiously awaiting news (or maybe not, I don’t know), but I promise you can’t possibly be more anxious than Ben and I are! My family started a baby pool, and my dad thinks tomorrow is the day, but I’m less convinced. I still haven’t had a single early labor sign. I don’t know how much I will want to share on various social media outlets, but Instagram is probably a good bet if you want up-to-date info. I doubt I’ll be blogging from the hospital!

Honda AC is finally fixed! This took a bit longer than expected because our mechanic had to order a new compressor. I had to get up early on Monday morning to drop the car off at the shop, and the repair took almost the whole day but HOORAY! We have functioning AC just in time for a string of VERY hot weather. Woot!

I baked this week for the first time in FOREVER. Baking used to be one of my favorite hobbies, but our Burlington apartment’s oven was so tiny I rarely used it. And living with my in-laws, it just felt like too much work, using someone else’s stuff and taking over someone else’s kitchen for hours at a time. But on Tuesday, I made two batches of rhubarb oat bars, and my oh my are they delicious! We have a HUGE patch of rhubarb in our yard, so I think this recipe will be a go-to for years to come.

We’re getting a piano! This is a luxury that Ben and I have often dreamed of for our family, but which seemed financially and practically out of reach. Then out of the blue this week, my dad texted to ask if we wanted his grandmother’s spinet piano. It had belonged to his sister’s youngest son (the only one in the family who played), but after Hayden moved out of his dad’s house, it went “up for grabs.” Considering that this belonged to my badass, long-lived great grandmother that we are thinking of naming our daughter after, we jumped at the chance to have one of her possessions! We are grateful to have something so nice, and which can be a great activity for our kids for years to come.

Have you ever baked with rhubarb? Got any recipes for me?

Tomorrow is going to be a jam-packed day! First up, cookie baking with Jaska, Penelope, Sabrina Joy, and Linzy. Jaska, Sabrina Joy and I used to have an annual cookie-baking date, but it’s been THREE YEARS since we last did it. Far, far too long! This will most likely be an all day thing, and will yield lots of tasty results. Then, it’s my friend Maria’s LulaRoe launch party, and then my friend Ian’s birthday celebration. It will likely be a long day, but a good one, too.

Ben’s hand seems to be healing fine. Thank you all for your concern this week. As far as hitting one’s finger with an axe goes, Ben’s situation was ideal. No nerve damage, no tendon damage, and thankfully so far, no infection. It was a deep cut, but because we got nearly immediate attention, he’ll right as rain very soon.

My in-laws are home from the Bahamas. They’d been gone for over a week, and while it was fun for Ben and me to have the house to ourselves, we also had to take care of all the animals by ourselves, which was kind of a pain. Now, we’re back to our normal morning and evening routine. Speaking of the Bahamas…

One month from today, we will be in Eleuthera. I honestly could not possibly be more excited. With everything that’s been going on lately, I need a nice long break. I need sun, sand, and ocean. I need staying up late and sleeping late, sunsets over the water, reading all day, and eating and drinking whatever I want, whenever I want. I have a countdown on my phone, and I look at it every day. Cannot. Wait.

Do you have any fun vacations or trips coming up? Tell me all about it!
