October 2017 Wrap Up

CrossFit
Well, this was not a good month for CrossFit. I only went a literal handful of times. Between the weird fall weather we’re having and coasting on the high of my half marathon PR, I just didn’t feel like doing much. I’m trying to remind myself how much I love going to class, and how good it is for my long term health. I hope to get back to class with some regularity in November.

Running
Once again, not a great month of running. After my race on October first, I only did a couple of short, easy runs. I’d love to say that I’m going to get back on the wagon, but looking out the window at the cold, dreary Vermont November weather, I know that’s not the case.

Since I’m NOT training for a spring race this year, I plan to pretty much not run this winter. I’m not a big fan of outdoor winter running, and since I ditched my Planet Fitness membership, I no longer have treadmill access. I’m a fair weather runner, what can I say?

Theatre
Lyric Theatre’s production of A Christmas Story the musical opens next week. This is the first Lyric show I haven’t been directly involved with since I was cast Legally Blonde back in the spring of 2014. It’s strange, but also good. It’s been a real treat to have free time, although I often feel like I don’t quite know what to do with myself.

I’ve now been to two meetings of the Lyric Theatre PR/Development Committee, and I really feel like I made the right choice. Meetings are fun and completely functional, and there are usually snacks 🙂 I’m excited to continue to contribute to Lyric’s future.

Highlight
Our Toronto trip, hands down. It was so, so nice to spend some one-on-one time together. Runner up is PUTTING AN OFFER IN ON A HOUSE! Yup. That happened. Stay tuned!

Lowlight
The great big wind storm that knocked out power for 3+ days. As of publishing this post, we still don’t have power at home. Boooo.

October Goals
As a refresher, my goals for September were:

  • Make house-hunting a priority–yes
  • Complete at least one item on my “long term” to-do list at work–yes
  • Go to CrossFit at least 2x per week–nope

As I said above, it wasn’t a good month for CF, but I’m not worried about it. As for my work projects, I have not one, but TWO nearly complete, and I’ve started some others. It feels really good to finally chip away at the stuff that doesn’t really have hard deadlines. It’s so easy to just let them go month after month.

November Goals

  • Complete at least one additional item on my “long term” to-do list at work
  • Go to CrossFit at least 2x per week

What was the highlight of your October?

Weekend Updates – Vet Visits, House Sitting and More

Happy Monday, friends! Welcome to another edition of Weekend Update!

Friday
Friday after work, I hit up CrossFit, which was both wonderful and hard, as always. This was my first time going to class twice in one week in a while, and I was FEELING it.

Photo Oct 27, 8 13 44 PM

After class I headed home to quickly pack my overnight bag for house sitting, and then zipped the 10 minutes down the road. I was greeted by two friendly puppers, and proceeded to spend the rest of the evening ensconced on a comfy couch, enjoying puppy snuggles and cable TV.

Saturday
First thing in the morning, we took our kitties to their annual vet visits. Creemee has a little skin irritation on her neck that we got some ointment for, and otherwise they are in good health. Hooray!

After dropping the kitties off at home, we headed out to look at a couple of houses, and, well, we kind of fell in love with one. So much so that we immediately scheduled a second viewing for Sunday so that we could bring my in-laws for a more critical once-over.

In the afternoon, Ben headed off to play disc golf with some friends while I headed back to the house and took the pups for a walk, threw in some laundry, and watched Halloween movies.

Photo Oct 28, 3 07 23 PM

When Ben got home, we headed over to our friends David and Alex’s house for a low-key Halloween party. We had some drinks and some snacks, and were home in bed before midnight.

Sunday
We had a bit of a lie-in Sunday morning, and after breakfast headed out to our second viewing of the house we liked. My in-laws both gave double thumbs up, and we coordinated a meeting with our Realtor for today to put together an offer package. Eek!

Photo Oct 28, 8 04 02 AM

We spent the rest of the afternoon at our buddy Pete’s house watching football, then headed back to our house-sitting gig for supper and an early bedtime. Unfortunately, northern VT was smacked with a crazy strong wind storm, and I had a VERY hard time sleeping with the wind howling around the house.

The power went out overnight, which meant no shower, no coffee, and no breakfast. AND there were major road closures due to downed trees and power lines, so I was over an hour late to work this morning. Happy Monday!

Did you experience the wind storm in your area?

September 2017 Wrap Up

CrossFit
While I didn’t get to CrossFit as much as I could have liked in September, I still made it to class at least twice a week most weeks, which is my self-imposed bare minimum. Would I like to be going three times a week? Of course. But in trying to keep up with both running and CF, and still trying to have at least one full rest day a week, there’s only so much I can do.

I’m strongly considering upping my CF membership to an unlimited monthly membership, rather than just my 12 classes per month. This would allow me to hit CF every weekday (or even 6 days a week if I wanted), and would only cost me $30 more each month. I still have some goals I’d like to achieve, and getting to class more consistently seems like the best way to get there. However, considering I rarely make it even three times a week, I’m not sure that the unlimited membership is the solution. It’s easy to say that spending more money is a motivator to get to class, but it’s already not working with the 12 classes per month, so…

Running
This month was the best running month I’ve had in quite a while. I did two double-digit long runs, some speed work, AND registered for my first “for time” half marathon in ages. I completed 7 runs for a total of 44 miles.

After having such a great month, I wish I could say that the momentum will continue, but I honestly doubt it. Now that I’m no longer training for a half, and as the weather here in Vermont gets ever colder and darker, I will probably back off on running a bit. I recently cancelled my Planet Fitness membership because I hadn’t gone in over nine months, which means that I no longer have access to a treadmill. That said, I’ll try to cram in some lunchtime or after work runs while the weather allows, but I’m not holding out hope for anymore high mileage until spring.

Theatre
I am still thoroughly enjoying NOT being involved in a show. I’ve had a couple of temptations pop up recently, both of the onstage and behind-the-scenes variety, but I’ve managed to stay strong and remember that I truly need a break. Not having rehearsals three or four nights a week means that getting in my runs and CrossFit workouts is easier than ever, and I still get to come home for supper, or see my friends, or do fun stuff with Ben.

Instead of being onstage, I have been trying really hard to SEE more shows. Ben and I road-tripped to Massachusetts earlier this month to see Company at Barrington Stage, starring Aaron Tveit of much Broadway acclaim. It was an excellent show, and well worth the whirlwind trip. I also have tickets to see Lyric’s production of A Christmas Story, a play my friend is directing, a cabaret-style show starring a bunch of my Lyric friends, and I’m looking at tickets for several other upcoming productions as well. I figure, if I can’t be on stage, seeing theatre is a great way to still feed my passion. I subscribe to the idea that, much like if you want to be a writer, you must read, if you want to be an actor, you must see shows.

Highlight
We have officially kicked off house hunting! We have an application in to get pre-approved for a mortgage, and have secured the services of a buyer’s realtor, so now begins the real work–actually finding a house. EEEEEEEK!

Lowlight
United Way campaign week kicked my ass. I ate like a garbage can, slept poorly, and was generally super stressed out for an entire week. I am SO GLAD that it’s over. AND, I found out that I’ve been granted a reprieve, and will not have to be on the committee next year. I am intensely grateful to have a break after four straight years.

September Goals
As a refresher, my goals for September were:

  • Go to CF 12 times (the max allowed with my membership) – no excuses!–no
  • Complete a 10+ mile long run–yes!
  • Plan a long weekend trip with Ben–yes!

I was somewhat disappointed in my CrossFit showing this month, as stated above. Still, though, I hit all of my other goals, so I can’t be too upset about it.

October Goals

  • Make house-hunting a priority
  • Complete at least one item on my “long term” to-do list at work
  • Go to CrossFit at least 2x per week

Did you have any goals for September? How’d you do?

Leaf Peepers Half Marathon Training
What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 09/25/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
We started with a strength WOD of 5 x 5 push presses, then did 5 rounds of 5 deadlifts, 5 front squats, 5 thrusters, and 5 push presses. I finished well under the time cap and promptly collapsed on the floor, haha. I hate to complain about the weather but it has been unseasonably hot lately!

IMG_4520

Tuesday 09/16/17: 5k Run | Rest
I had lunch plans and after work plans, so a run sadly wasn’t in the cards. I was secretly ok with it though, because it was still super hot.

Wednesday 09/27/17: CrossFit | 4.1 Mile Run
I was still VERY sore from Monday’s CF workout, so I headed out for a quick run. It was really hot, so I made a point of not checking my pace AT ALL and just running by feel. I surprised the hell out of myself with an average pace of just under 10 minute miles. Woohoo!

Thursday 09/28/17: 5k Run | CrossFit
I was feeling a bit less stiff, so I made up Wednesday’s CF class. We did a bunch of sprints, which I nailed, if I do say so myself, then a workout of deadlifts and muscle-ups (or ring dips in my case), with some double-unders sprinkled in every three minutes. It was tough, but good.

Friday 09/29/17: CrossFit | 5k Run
With the gorgeous fall weather, I just HAD to get out for a run. I took it to a hilly portion of the bike path to help prepare me for Sunday’s race.

Saturday 09/30/17: Rest | Rest
I did some productive stuff around the house and hydrated like a boss. We had some friends over for supper, but I made it to bed at a decent hour.

Sunday 10/01/17: Leaf Peepers Half | Leaf Peepers Half
If you follow me on social media, you know that I got a big fat PR! Full recap to come later this week 🙂

Leaf Peepers Half Marathon Training
What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 09/18/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
We started with some overhead squatting (which I’m finally making progress in!), then did a “3-mom” workout (every three minutes) of 250m rows, 10 KB swings, and 2 rope climbs.

Tuesday 09/19/17: 5k Run | Rest
We met with a mortgage broker in the afternoon, so I had to work through lunch, and then I had dinner plans with friends, so no run.

Wednesday 09/02017: CrossFit | CrossFit
We started with three rounds of EMOM: 2 Turkish get-ups, planks, and 10 candlestick rolls. After that was 3 rounds for time of 10 DB snatches, 50 double-unders, 10 box jumps, and a 400m uphill run. I managed to finish in 15:29, which I was proud of.

Thursday 09/21/17: 5 Mile Run | 1m WU + 8 x 400 + 1m CD
I’ve really been neglecting speed work lately, and wanted to run fast, so I decided to add some intervals to my middle distance run. It felt really good to do some speedy intervals for the first time in quite a while.

Friday 09/22/17: CrossFit | Rest
I had to work late for a United Way event, and after that, all I wanted to do was go home, have a drink, and sit on my butt. So I did.

Saturday 09/23/17: Rest | Rest
After a crazy week at work, I desperately needed a “sit on my butt” day. And that’s what I had. And it was glorious.

Sunday 09/24/17: 8 Mile Run | 8 Mile Run
This was the strongest long run I’ve had in quite some time. It was a bit hot, but I managed a 10:11/mile pace overall, which I was really happy with. Now if only I could manage that for an entire half marathon!

Weekly Mileage: 13
Total 2017 Mileage: 162

So, this was a great week workout-wise. I was pretty consistent, and even did a speed workout for the first time in ages. Unfortunately, this week was kind of a disaster on the nutrition front. Between being super busy with United Way activities, plus all of the food-based activities that United Way week entails, I was basically a garbage can. But hey, at least I was active. I’ll do better next week.

Oh, and get this–I OFFICIALLY REGISTERED FOR LEAF PEEPERS. I’m actually running a half marathon this weekend. Holy sh!t. I can’t lie, I’m really nervous, but also excited. This will most likely be my last race for a while, so I hope to make it count. Time to commence hydration, outfit-planning, and weather-stalking. Eeeeee!

How was your weekend?

What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 09/04/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
This was a doozy. We started out with a quick ab workout, then ran half a mile, then did a for time workout of 100 sit-ups, 50 burpees, and a 140m overhead dumbbell carry, and finished up with Jackie (1000m row, 50 thrusters, and 30 pull-ups). I was BEAT.

Tuesday 09/05/17: 5k Run | 5k Run
It was a beautiful, sunny evening, and I ran a nice, easy 5k.

Wednesday 09/06/17: CrossFit | Walk @ Lunch
We had our client appreciation event in the evening, so I went for a nice 3-ish mile walk on my lunch break.

Thursday 09/07/17: 5 Mile Run | CrossFit
We started with a set of 15 snatch complexes with increasing load, then did 3 rounds of 30-20-10 slam ball toss overs, slam ball squats, and slam ball push-ups.

Friday 09/08/17: CrossFit | Rest
I really wanted to run, but it was hot outside during lunch, and we were meeting a realtor after work. Whomp whomp.

Saturday 09/09/17: Rest | Rest
This was a “get caught up on life stuff” kind of day. Laundry, cleaning, napping etc. Then we had supper with our friends Lori and Emerson.

Sunday 09/10/17: 11 Mile Run | 11 Mile Run
Wow, this long run was SO MUCH BETTER than my 10 mile run two weeks ago. Faster, easier, and just more pleasant overall. Woohoo!

Leaf Peepers Half Marathon Training
What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 09/04/17: 10 Mile Run | 10 Miles @ 11:22
This was my longest run since marathon training last year, and it was HARD. It’s not that it was particularly hot, or that I was dehydrated or anything specific. It was just hard.

Tuesday 09/05/17: 5k Run | Rest
I had grand ambitions to do a nice little recovery run, but between pouring rain and lingering exhaustion from my long run, it just didn’t happen.

Wednesday 09/06/17: CrossFit | Rest
After a night of piss-poor sleep, I was already exhausted. And then our mortgage broker cancelled our meeting last-minute, so I was grouchy to boot, so I just went home.

Thursday 09/07/17: 5 Mile Run | Rest
It was another cold, rainy day, so running was out. And I had to work late, so CrossFit was out. Boo.

Friday 09/08/17: CrossFit | Rest
We were seeing a show in Stowe and I knew I wouldn’t have enough time to go to class, change, eat, and get out to Stowe without feeling super stressed, so I just went home.

Saturday 09/09/17: Rest | Rest
Another cold, rainy day where I just didn’t feel like doing anything. It was glorious to just laze around in PJs most of the day.

Sunday 09/10/17: 11 Mile Run | Rest
Despite my plans for a relaxing weekend, I ended up doing a fair amount of running around on Sunday and didn’t make time to run.

Weekly Mileage: 10
Total 2017 Mileage: 135

Oof. Not a great week. But I’m over it. I was exhausted and cranky all week, and all I wanted to do after work was go home, put on PJs, and snuggle with Ben. Having a house to ourselves for almost a week was really, really nice. We spent a ton of time together, which we really needed. Here’s to a new week!

What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 08/28/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
We did a special workout to celebrate some members of the box getting married. It was a LOT of work, but also lots of fun, wrapping up with Hero WOD Bradley, which is 10 rounds of 100 m run, 10 pull-ups, 100 m run, and 10 burpees, with 30 seconds of rest in between.

Tuesday 08/29/17: 5k Run | 5k Run
Not much to say about this, other than it was great weather and a solid run.

Wednesday 08/30/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
We did Helen (3 rounds of 400 m run, 21 KB swings, and 12 pull-ups), then did a “death by wall ball shot” workout, which meant an EMOM of wall ball shots, starting with 6 and adding 2 each minute until you couldn’t complete them within the minute. It was ROUGH, but good.

Thursday 08/31/17: 5 Mile Run | 5 Mile Run
A lovely afternoon and a lovely run. I averaged right around a 10 minute mile pace and felt great the whole time.

Friday 09/01/17: CrossFit | Rest
I had my wisdom teeth out in the morning, so I opted not to go to CrossFit.

Saturday 09/02/17: Rest | Rest
Ben and I drove to the Berkshires and back in one day to see a production of the musical Company at Barrington Stage Company. It was a long day, but well worth the trip.

Sunday 09/03/17: 10 Mile Run | Rest
It was a cold, stormy day, so I didn’t run. I knew I had Monday off work, so I pushed it off.

Overall, it was a pretty good week. I would have gone to three CrossFit classes had it not been for my oral surgery, and I got two runs in too. AND I actually did my long run on Monday. Sweet!

August 2017 Wrap Up

I know it’s a day early, but I’m trying to stick to my M-W-F blog posting schedule, so just roll with it!

CrossFit
All I can say is, YAAAAAAAY. Since Dogfight wrapped up early this month, I have been going to class three times a week. The first two weeks were a tough adjustment, and I was sore pretty much all the time, but now I’m feeling great. I will be wrapping up this month with eleven total classes, which I believe is the highest number since I started.

I’m already seeing some noticeable gains since getting to class more consistently, and I’m excited to see where it continues to take me. My friend Cat recently commented that my arms were looking amazing, which made me feel SO GOOD, because I’ve always been self conscious about my arms.

I’m also delighted to report that although I’ve only lost about three pounds since I started CF in January, my overall measurements are almost back to where I was three years ago. So basically, I’m becoming more muscular and slimming down a bit, which is good enough for me. I actually need to buy some new jeans because mine are a officially too big! I spent all night at Ben’s birthday party pulling them up over my butt.

Running
If I complete tomorrow’s scheduled run, I will finish out August with 7 runs for a total of 31 miles in August. Considering that fitting running in alongside CrossFit continues to be a challenge, I’ll take it. CrossFit takes priority for me because the membership is so expensive, so with three days a week already spoken for, squeezing in the runs is harder. This is compounded by the fact that just waking up early in the morning and running from my house is simply not doable due STEEP (seriously) hills and busy roads with no shoulder. This means after work and lunch breaks are my only options for mid-week runs, and depending on the weather and my schedule, it just doesn’t happen as often as I’d like.

I’m still on the fence about running the Charlotte Covered Bridges Half on September 9. I haven’t run long in two weeks due to my right foot niggles, but otherwise, I feel good, and pretty well trained. My heart is telling me to go for a PR attempt, but my budget is telling me that the $50 registration fee would be much better spent elsewhere. I’m toying with the idea of putting it off another month and finding a race in October, but I know myself well enough to know that I would have the same wishy-washy feelings then as I’m having now. Only time will tell whether or not this fall holds a half marathon for me.

Theatre
Oh my, am I LOVING this break right now. I continue to have FOMO over fall shows, but I just keep reminding myself how amazing it is not to have rehearsal or shows four times a week. I’m trying to just soak up all the relaxation I can, because I rarely allow myself to have down time, and I know it’s only a matter of time before I cram in something else.

Highlight
BEN CAME HOME! This was not the first time we’ve spent an extended period of time apart – we spent four months apart while he did a study abroad program when we’d only been dating for about four months – but him being away nearly the entire summer was still challenging for both of us.

The good news is, the saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” is definitely true. I feel like we’ve been so much more appreciative of each other, and spending a lot more time together since he got home. We’re also planning a weekend getaway to Toronto for October. Even though we travel a lot, we’ve actually NEVER taken a vacation together just the two of us. We’re always staying with/visiting other people. It will be nice to have some “us” time before we (hopefully) get pregnant in the next few months.

Lowlight
Our eye-opening appointment with the mortgage broker. We’re definitely not giving up by any means, but we’re expanding our options. We’re looking at potentially buying land and building a small house with the option to add on later, considering staying with his folks for another year or two, and lots of other possibilities. But yeah, seeing the bottom line numbers was scary and stressful for sure.

August Goals
As a refresher, my goals for August were:

  • Stick to “no booze and no treats Monday-Thursday” rule–mostly yes
  • Go to CF at least twice a week, preferably three–mostly yes
  • Run at least twice a week–mostly yes

So, the caveat with all of these goals is that I’m counting “August” as post-Dogfight. Once the show wrapped up on August 5, I did really, really well with getting to CrossFit three times a week, and running once or twice a week, with only a few exceptions (mostly due to my ouchie right foot). The no booze/no treats rule was messed up a few times due to special events like friends visiting from out of town, but for the most part I stuck with it, and it’s becoming the new normal. So much so that I’m not even making it a September goal!

September Goals

  • Go to CF 12 times (the max allowed with my membership) – no excuses!
  • Complete a 10+ mile long run
  • Plan a long weekend trip with Ben

Do you have any goals for September?

Training For: Charlotte Covered Bridges Half?

What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 08/21/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
We started with some back squat work, then moved into Open Workout 11.1/14.1, which was a 10 minute AMRAP of 30 double-unders and 15 power snatches. We finished up with 40 manmakers with a 10 minute cap. I was so sweaty toward the end that I had to stop after each one to wipe the sweat out of my eyes. Gross.

Tuesday 08/22/17: 5k Run | Rest
My foot was still not feeling right, so I decided to be extra cautious and take a full rest day.

Wednesday 08/23/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
This class was a LOT of work. We did some skill work for handstand push-ups, then did 3 x 8 seated dumbbell presses, then did two 7 minute workouts. First was 15-9-7 HSPU (I did pike push-ups) and hang cleans, then 9-7-5 deficit HSPU (I used a box) and burpee bar muscle-ups (I just hung from the bar).

Thursday 08/24/17: 5 Mile Run | 5 Mile Run
After a week off from running, I was anxious to see how my foot was feeling. It hadn’t hurt in a couple of days, so I set off for my scheduled 5 miler. I felt great until about 4.5 miles in, at which point I started feeling some twinges.

Friday 08/25/17: CrossFit | CrossFit
Today’s workout was a quickie–10-8-6-4 on clean and jerks and burpee bar jump overs, with varying distance runs in between. I was very proud of my finishing time of 18:53. Then I went home and had tacos and a gin and tonic, and watched Netflix until bedtime.

Saturday 08/26/17: Rest | Rest
And rest I did! After a morning appointment to view some property, I pretty much sat on my butt all day, binge-watching Once Upon a Time on Netflix.

Sunday 08/27/17: 11 Mile Run | 3.1 Mile Hike/Walk
I decided not to push things with my foot, but we still wanted to get out and do something active, so we went for a nice nature walk/hike around Colchester Pond.

IMG_4451

Overall, it was another solid week. I hit my three scheduled CrossFit classes, and did one nice, middle-distance run. My foot has been feeling good lately, so I’ll attempt to stay on my training plan this week. Running the Covered Bridges Half is pretty unlikely at this point, but you never know.

Have you done any hiking lately?
