Friday Free-For-All – 12/23/16

I AM SO READY FOR A LONG WEEKEND. I have to work today (Ben has the day off and I’m very jealous), but then I have Monday off for Christmas, so I’m basically living for 4:30 pm. I’m very much looking forward to relaxing with my family, watching Christmas movies, sipping eggnog, and NOT being at work for three days. And then I only have to work three days next week, and only four days the week after that, so basically I don’t work a full week for the next two weeks. Score!

Christmas music has gotten me through this week. I just haven’t been feeling work at all lately, but jamming out to Christmas tunes has at least kept my mood up enough that I can perform my basic job functions. In fact, I’ve actually been pretty productive this week in preparation for year-end and quarter-end madness. I’m just trying to square everything away today so I don’t have any work anxiety this weekend.

My sister-in-law Emily is home from Prague. It’s been really fun having here here. She’s been living in the Czech Republic for almost two years now, so I don’t get to see her very much. We’ve been spending lots of quality time together playing video games, cooking, and eating. My other SIL Leah is arriving on Saturday, at which point I will be in Quechee with my folks, but she’s staying through New Year’s, so I’ll still get to spend some time with her as well. I’m anticipating some marathon games of Settlers of Catan once we’re all in the house 🙂

I started a Bullet Journal in September and it’s pretty magical. I’m not going to try to explain what a Bullet Journal is because there are so many descriptions, videos, blog posts, and general rave reviews already out there. I’m just saying, it’s been great for me. Part planner, part journal, part to-do list, part art project, it’s working for me the way other planners never have, because it’s 100% customize-able to my needs and preferences. If you like paper planners but have never found the “perfect” one, go Google Bullet Journal and prepare to fall down the rabbit hole.

Did you/do you have to work today? Are you ready for Christmas?

I’m in for some nostalgia this weekend. When I was a kid, we’d spend a week every summer at Crescent Lake in central NH. My dad’s childhood best friend’s dad owned two cabins, and we’d rent one out. Some of my most treasured childhood memories are of time spent there. When I was in my late teens/early 20’s, Mr. Brown sold the rental cabin, keeping his lakefront cabin for personal and family use, so our tradition died, and it was really sad. For old time’s sake, we’ve coordinated with Mr. Brown and his family to rent the cabin for a few days and we’re all going to go together. I can only stay for the weekend due to work obligations, but I’m excited nonetheless for some swimming, fishing, frog and turtle catching, and general family time.

It’s Ladies’ Night tonight! Some of my lady friends and I are having a lady date. We’re getting dinner at my favorite Mexican restaurant, El Gato (shrimp tacos in mah belly!) and then seeing Ghost Busters. I’m feeling pretty skeptical about this whole remake situation. As a rule, I hate remakes and reboots, particularly of what I consider to be classic films like Ghost Busters. But I’m trying to look at it from a feminist perspective and support awesome, female-centric comedy, so we’ll see. I do love Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. And if nothing else, it’s a night out with my girls Stacy and Abbie. Speaking of remakes…

A “Beaches” remake? Really? Don’t get me wrong, I love Idina Menzel just as much as, if not more than, the average girl. I’ve been a fan since I first listened to the Rent original broadway cast soundtrack, waaaaay back before Frozen. But Beaches actually is a classic, and does not require remaking in any way. It starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, for crying out loud! I love Idina, but in no way can she replace Bette. I just… Can we PLEASE stop with the remakes? Can we PLEASE come up with some original material??

I have resigned as a BibRave Pro. There was a lot that went into this decision, and I may go further into this in the future, but long story short is that I was feeling overwhelmed by my social media obligations. I enjoyed being part of such a fun group, and I value all of the opportunities I had while representing them, but I definitely needed to step aside and let others who are more excited about social media engagement take my place. Unfortunately, this does mean that I won’t have any more discounts to share with you all, but c’est la vie.

Are you as tired as I am of all the Hollywood remakes and reboots lately?

Friday Free-For-All – 12/11/15

FFFA (1)

I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve had one of these… since before Thanksgiving? Wow. Time to get my ish together…

I decorated the office for Christmas this week and it’s making me SO HAPPY. I love coming in every morning and turning on the lights and smelling the balsam sachet on my desk. It’s really helping me get into the Christmas spirit, which, for the first time ever, I’m having a bit of trouble with. It might be the weather (no snow on the ground), or being stressed out about Mary Poppins auditions, or who knows, but I’m finally getting there.

My sister-in-law Emily is home from Prague for a whole month! She arrived on Wednesday, and Sunday is her birthday, so we’ll be doing dinner with the whole family. It will be great to see Emily and do fun things like watch movies and play video games together. I’m sure she’ll come into town and stay with us at least a few nights 🙂

I had a callback for the title role in Mary Poppins last night. It was very exciting to be asked to come in to sing and read some more. I think it went well, but casting a show is like putting together a puzzle, and at this point, I just have to hope that I fit the big picture. I won’t know until tomorrow afternoon!

The RW Holiday Run Streak is over for me. I made it two weeks, which I think is pretty damn good, but I’m done. I’ll talk more about it in a post next week, but for now I’ll just say that I’m not injured or anything like that, so don’t worry!

What’s the longest run streak you’ve ever done?

Are you feeling the Christmas spirit?

Friday Free-For-All (Four)

Welcome to Friday Free-For-All, where I talk about anything and everything on my mind.  Sometimes, it even makes sense!

#Chewsday Challenge Check-In:  This week was tough.  Ben and I are a bit short on funds at the moment, so we didn’t make it to the grocery store.  For the most part, I stuck to my rules–no booze during the week, one treat per day, protein at every meal.  The only one I didn’t do well with was veggie or fruit at every meal.  We are fresh out of fresh produce, so I didn’t have anything for breakfasts, but I was able to get some in for most of my meals and snacks, so all in all, I’m feeling good.  Hopefully I can continue these habits through vacation this coming week.  I think a large part of that will be buying my own groceries.

I got this super-spiffy, super-expensive tote bag fo’ free!  This is a custom-designed Timbuk2 Tartine tote that my coworker’s daughters gave her.  Online, the color looked like a nice coral, but in person, it’s screaming orange.  Since orange is not Lori’s color, and is so totally mine, she gave me this tote bag, brand new with the tags still on.  This will be my new summer tote/beach bag, and I’m super psyched.  Lots of pockets and a wipeable TPU lining means easy clean-up.  The best part is, this tote is versatile enough that it can replace two other tote bags, which helps me clear out some clutter!

What is it with racer-back everything for women?  I’m in the market for some new running tanks, and it seems like everything available for women is racer-back.  The sports bras that I’m currently using (lululemon tata-tamer) are not racer-back, so if I wear a racer-back tank, my bra straps are hanging out, which I really don’t find attractive.  Do any of you have suggestions for tanks that have a normal back?  I found some ones that look nice by C9 at Target, but I don’t have a Target near me and I’m hesitant about buying clothes online.

Busty girl running problems.  I desperately need some new sports bras.  The ones I’m currently using, lululemon tata-tamers, just aren’t cutting it.  I could actually feel my boobs bouncing and they hurt a lot during and after my 8 miler on Sunday.  I am a 32G, and sports bras my size are not readily available.  I can’t spend a lot right now, but I would really like to get something before the half on June 29.  Any other busty runners out there?  What do you use?  Help a fellow busty girl out!

I AM SUPER EXCITED FOR MY VACATION!!!  As of 4:30 pm today, I will be in vacation mode.  This is my family’s annual trip to Cape Cod, and it couldn’t be coming at a better time.  I need a few days off from work and some time with my family.  I’m looking forward to early morning runs, lots of reading, working on my tan (with sunscreen, of course!), swimming, and shopping.  I’ve already planned out a 3 mile and a 5 mile running route, so I’ll hopefully be able to get my first double-digit run in at some point.  I’ll try to post a couple of times, but no promises.  And I’ll try to keep up with reading and comments.  And of course, I’ll be doing a recap post when I get back 🙂

Catch me right here all week :)

Catch me right here all week 🙂

Do you have an annual family vacation?  Have you ever been to Cape Cod?

Friday Free For All (Three)

Welcome to Friday Free-For-All, where I talk about anything and everything on my mind.  Sometimes, it even makes sense!

My parents are moving.  Long story short, my parents relocated last summer because my dad got a new job.  They were living rent-free in the town where dad works.  Tiny, tiny town.  600 people.  Fishbowl.  Gossip city.  They HATE it there.  Since they never managed to sell the old house, they’ve decided to move back and my dad will commute to work.  This is awesome for many reasons.  One, instead of being 2.5 hours away, they’re only 1.5 hours away.  More visits!  Two, the house they’re moving back to is really nice and in a great area.  Three, my parents will be happier and less stressed.  Win, win win!

I’m leaving work at 12:30 today.  It’s a three-day weekend, so we’re shipping off to Boston (woah oh oh!) to stay with some friends.  I’m looking forward to beer, food, runs around scenic Jamaica Pond, puppies, movies, games, and laughs.  Oh, and having three and a half days off of work 😀

Morning runs are totally working out.  I have gotten up at 5:30am every day this week, and I have run two of those mornings.  With Ben 🙂  It’s actually been really nice, and I may add in an extra running day just because I want to and I like it.  So there.

I scored a free exercise ball from work.  One of the big inflatable ones.  This will be great for ab work, and generally bouncing around the house.  I tried using it to sit on at work, but my desk is a bit too high, so it just didn’t work out.  Oh well.

What are you up to this holiday weekend?

Do you live close to your parents?  Do you see them often?

I’m am so thrilled to announce that I have reached my fundraising goal of $1000 for the Vermont Respite House Jiggety Jog 5k!

Photo May 06, 10 03 49 AM

I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the donations pouring in from friends, family, coworkers and bloggers.  The Respite House is a truly special place, and this money is well-deserved.

Now that I’ve reached my fundraising goal, I feel like I can really relax and enjoy this race.  Unfortunately, the weather for Saturday isn’t looking so great right now–70s and rainy.  Booo.  I’m still excited, though.  My parents will be coming and this is the first time they’ve ever seen me race.  It’s also my birthday weekend (!!) so my energy is bound to be really positive.

This is turning out to be a really awesome week here on Darlin’ Rae!

Are you racing this weekend?

Do your parents/family ever come watch you race?
