Friday Free-For-All

My coworkers threw me a Star Wars-themed baby shower! Once again, I’m simply blown away by their thoughtfulness, generosity, and creativity. Seriously. We received so many lovely gifts, and several Amazon giftcards that are sure to come in handy down the line as we figure out exactly what we need to keep our little one happy. While I’m obviously very excited to start my new role as stay at home mom, I will desperately miss my colleagues.

We ordered a new pet fountain. You may remember several months ago, our kitty Rocket had a big health scare and spent four days in the kitty hospital. One of the number one recommendations was to get a pet fountain to encourage him to drink more water. At the time, one of my coworkers offered to let us borrow hers since her cat had recently passed away. Now that I’m about to leave work, though, my coworker has asked that we return the fountain. I went on Amazon and was thoroughly shocked by a) how many different options there are, and b) how EXPENSIVE they are. The version we had borrowed from my coworker retails for $85! Obviously, I wasn’t spending that. I got a slightly smaller ceramic version by the same company (for about half the price!), and I’m optimistic that it will suit our needs just fine. And the fact that it’s smaller will probably encourage me to clean it more often anyway.

I haven’t been to yoga in two weeks and I’m feeling it. I didn’t go last week because work was so crazy I had to stay late. Then this week, I had a vacation day on Tuesday and didn’t feel like driving into town just for class. But now I kind of regret not going, as my hip is complaining and my carpal tunnel has been really bad this week. My unlimited summer pass starts today, so I’m hoping to get to class more than once a week for the remainder of my pregnancy. Fingers crossed I actually get some time to myself after leaving work and before baby comes!

I got my hair cut last night. Unfortunately, she took quite a bit more off than I would have liked (we’re talking 3-4 inches total versus the 1-2 I was imagining), but thankfully it looks great, and does feel a lot healthier than it did before. It’s also funny that even though to me it looks DRASTICALLY different, not one single person at work has noticed so far.

We’re traveling this weekend. Ben’s great uncle Jipper passed away this winter, and his memorial service is tomorrow afternoon in Albany. We’re road-tripping down with my in-laws and splitting a hotel room, so the cost isn’t too crazy. And Albany is only about 2.5-3 hours from home just in case there is any early movement on the baby front. I’m a little bit nervous about traveling so close to my due date, but based on a conversation with my midwife, I really don’t think there’s anything to worry about at this point. This will likely be our last trip for the next little while, so I’m trying to focus on the positive of seeing extended family before the baby comes. We likely won’t make it to the family reunion because it’s scheduled for early July (aka right in the middle of potential baby time), so it will be good to get some family time in.

Are you hyper-sensitive about haircuts like me?

Weekend Update – Haircuts & Settling In

Happy Monday, friends! Things are slowly but surely coming together at the house. We did a TON of work this weekend, and we’re really starting to settle in, which feels great.

Friday
After work I headed straight home. Ben had a broom ball game, but not until 9, so we hung out for a while and did a few little cleaning/unpacking projects.

Once he left, I got started on the second coat of paint in the kitchen/living/dining rooms. We got zero-VOC, low fume paint, and the nurses at my practice said it was safe for me to paint, so paint I did. I got a major jump start on the kitchen, and then spent the rest of the evening curled up on our futon watching a movie.

Saturday
We were both out of bed relatively early on Saturday, and after a quick breakfast we got right to work on painting. I did the cutting in while Ben rolled away, and by the time Emily arrived to help out around 10 am, we were mostly done! We set her to work painting the closet in our guest/baby room while we started replacing outlet covers and removing painter’s tape.

My in-laws arrived shortly after with a few leftover items from their house, and my father-in-law helped Ben install the cat door in our basement door. We plan to put the kitty litter box in the basement so we don’t have to see/smell it all the time.

Everybody was gone by about 1:30, so Ben and I continued to unpack the multitude of boxes still scattered around the house. Eventually we had to shower and get ready to go over to Nick and Nikki’s house, because we had plans for both of us to get haircuts, me to get my balayage freshened up, and then to have dinner and watch a movie.

My hair looks great now. Not really different than before, just fresh highlights and a trim, but it looks and feels a lot healthier, which is wonderful. We had ham, Caesar salad, roasted potatoes, and Parmesan bread for supper, with a cookie smorgasbord for dessert, and we finally saw Get Out. Ben doesn’t like scary/suspenseful movies, so he was kind of irritated for most of the movie, but when it was over agreed that it was really good and he was glad he saw it.

Sunday
Sunday morning was much more leisurely. We slept in, made coffee and breakfast, then meal planned out our week so we could get grocery shopping done early. After the grocery store, we hit up our local hardware store to grab a few more things for projects around the house. It’s starting to feel like the hardware store is our second home, we’re there so often!

We were done with errands and home before 1 pm, then spent the rest of the day doing ALL THE THINGS. Ben made bread, I hard boiled eggs for snacks, I made a delicious cheesy crock pot chili for dinner, I cleaned the toilets, we did three loads of laundry, hung up pictures, my medal holder, and our giant spider plant, hung clothesline and vacuumed the basement, unpacked the rest of the boxes that had been cluttering our kitchen, made chicken stock, and a dozen other things that I can’t remember right now. AND, we had time to watch a movie together after dinner, which was a relaxing end to a busy weekend.

Today will likely be a short day at work due to the holiday and the fact that both our corporate offices and the US Stock Exchange are closed. If I’m released early, I’m going to hit up Home Depot (yes, again!) and Walmart to grab a few more thing. It’s a damn good thing we’ve been saving for over a year for this, because setting up a new house is EXPENSIVE!

Do you have Presidents’ Day off?

TGIF! This was a busy, stressful week at work, and I am SO GLAD it’s almost over. I’m also pumped because next week the majority of my team is out at a conference, so it will be just me and Freda holding down the fort. It should be a much more quiet week, and I can’t wait.

We’re house sitting until May 2. We’re back to our usual house-sitting gig for almost two weeks. We’ll be hanging out with Annie the Jack Russell Terrier and enjoying mountain views and hot tub time. While I genuinely love living with Ben’s parents, it will be nice to have our own space for a few weeks.

Ben’s job situation remains up in the air. He was supposed to have his interview this week, but due to last week’s emergency situation, it’s been pushed back. Obviously, we are frustrated and disappointed to be left in limbo another week, but it is what it is. Fingers crossed he gets an interview scheduled for next week.

I got a haircut at a new salon this week. I’m still actively growing my hair out, but I like to get a trim every three months to keep the ends healthy. I used to go see a friend of mine, but at $65 bucks a pop, it just wasn’t fiscally responsible. I tried out a new place, and it was pretty decent. My stylist was a bit loopy, and talked WAY too much, but for the price, I was happy with what I got. And now I can stop snipping individual split ends when I’m bored at my desk.

I have a new Podcast obsession. I go in fits and starts with Podcasts. I feel like I find one I get really excited about, but lose enthusiasm quickly. But this new (to me) one is GOLD. It’s called Theater People, and it features full-length interviews with Broadway stars. For a total theatre nerd like me (yes, I spell it “re” and not “er”) it’s PERFECT. I have a 45 minute commute each way to work, and I have been loving getting behind the scenes info, advice, and inspiration from performers I admire.

Are you as happy as I am that it’s Friday?
