Manic Monday

Training For: VT Corporate Cup Challenge 5k (May 11) and VT Respite House Jiggety Jog 5k (May 13)

Monday 04/24/17: 3 Mile Walk + CrossFit
I’m trying really hard to distance myself from screens more often, so rather than watching Netflix on my lunch break, I went for a walk. CrossFit strength WOD was Thrusters and Fronts Squats (I PR’d in both!), and then a 15 minute AMRAP with muscle ball squats, pushups, lat pulldowns, and a 140 meter muscle ball sprint.

Tuesday 04/25/17: Rest
I had intended to run during my break, but a) it was rainy and cold, and b) my coworker offered to take me out to lunch. Running after work was also not an option because I had dinner plans with my friend Stacy.

Wednesday 04/26/17: 3 Mile Walk + CrossFit
Another delightful lunch time walk, and CF after work. We did push presses, and then a killer Tabata workout that made me want to die in the best way possible. And after that, I went to a dinner party and ate my face off.

Thursday 04/27/17: 5k Run
First run in the Altras! Also, hottest day of the year so far. I’m not ready to make any judgments yet, but I remain optimistic. I had hoped to hit up yoga after work, but instead we met up with some of Ben’s coworkers for drinks and charcuterie by the waterfront. Yum!

Friday 04/28/17: CrossFit
It was a GORGEOUS day, and I almost bailed on CF to go for a run instead, but I’m really trying to make sure I get in as many classes as possible. I pay in advance for 12 classes per month, and get charged for 12 classes regardless of how many I actually attend (or don’t). Some deadlifts and a combo of Diane and Elizabeth later, I was ready for “Fundue” at Pete and Jen’s.

Saturday 04/29/17: Rest
After breakfast we went over to Ben’s folks’ place to help out with a few chores and to change the oil in the Honda, then came back and walked Annie before family dinner. Ben’s aunt Karen, uncle Stan, and cousin Sara with her husband George and 2 year old son William, plus Grammy, all came over for BBQ chicken dinner.

Sunday 04/30/17: 4 Mile Run
It was a cold, damp morning, spitting rain and even some hail, but Ben and I both got out there and got 4 miles done at our respective paces (he’s quite a bit faster than me, the bastard!). The rest of the day was spent relaxing and getting ready for the work week ahead.

We’ve got another couple of days of house sitting, and then I am DETERMINED to get back on the meal planning/prep bandwagon. I’m spending way too much money and eating way too much junk. I want to get back into the swing of things before Dogfight rehearsals start, so that I can keep it up once things get busy again.

Do you ever do your own car maintenance? We’re really lucky that Ben’s dad has a lift in the shop, which makes this kind of thing a lot easier.

Manic Monday

Training For: VT Corporate Cup Challenge 5k (May 11) and VT Respite House Jiggety Jog 5k (May 13)

Monday 04/17/17: CrossFit
Strength WOD was floor presses, which I loved; I’m actually fairly strong in pressing movements! And then the MetCon was a half Murph, which is a ridiculously tough Hero WOD that most boxes do on Memorial Day.

Tuesday 04/18/17: 3.25 Mile Run (4 X 400)
My first speed work in ages! I did a 1 mile w/u, 4 X 400, and a 1/4 mile cool down. I’m nowhere near as fast as I once was, but I hit a sub-9 pace on my last 400 repeat (which also was on a downhill!), so I can’t complain.

Wednesday 04/19/17: CrossFit
For the strength WOD, we worked on Thrusters and Front Squats, and the MetCon was surprisingly good, too–pullups and a kettlebell squat complex. I snuck out of work early to take an early class so I could do a beer tasting with friends afterwards, which was delightful.

Thursday 04/20/17: Hot Yoga
I had hoped to get in a lunch run, but it was rainy and cold, so I settled for hot yoga after work. There was a guest teacher who was a little bit more out there than I typically like, but it was a nice class nonetheless.

Friday 04/21/17: CrossFit
We started with working up to one rep max on Chest Presses, which was a bit disappointing for me; I couldn’t even get to my old max. I guess it’s been a while since I set it, but still. And then we did a 10 minute MetCon with Dumbell Snatches, rowing, burpee bar jump overs, and muscle ups. I cannot do muscle ups yet and didn’t even get there before time was up, so… Boo.

Saturday 04/22/17: Lyric Warehouse Cleanup
Part of the commitment to each Lyric show is attending a “warehouse cleanup” day, where we sort through all of the set pieces and costumes and junk that we had to disassemble and haul back to the storage space during strike. I ended up painting an entire kitchen with my friend Merrill, which was actually a lot of fun.

Sunday 04/23/17: Rest
It was a relaxed sort of day. We took Annie for a walk, spent some time in the hot tub, and went to the 9 to 5 post-production party. And then we capped the night at the St. John’s Club and were treated to this sunset:

Not a bad week, all things considered. I hate to say I’m settling into a routine, because I know Dogfight rehearsals are going to start any day and totally throw everything off, but things feel pretty good right now. Fingers crossed I can keep up with stuff.

Do you like painting walls etc? I actually really love it 🙂

Manic Monday

Training For: VT Corporate Cup Challenge 5k (May 11)and VT Respite House Jiggety Jog 5k (May 13)

Monday 04/10/17: Rest
I took the day off of work to rest and recuperate after my crazy show week for 9 to 5. I slept until almost 11, and then just puttered around the house getting my life back together.

Tuesday 04/11/17: 3 mile run
This was my first outdoor run AND longest run since November. Spring has finally sprung in VT and I had a beautiful, sunny day for runch. Perfection.

Wednesday 04/12/17: CrossFit
I picked a doozy of a day to come back to it after a week and change off. We worked on strict and push presses, and then did a MetCon that made me want to die. Only one person the WHOLE DAY finished the workout, and we have some tough, strong people at our box.

Thursday 04/13/17: 5k Run + Hot Yoga
A twofer! I can’t remember the last time I had a double day. I ran at lunch because I’m trying to get back to a semi-regular schedule. And then I hit up hot yoga before happy hour with Ben, his colleague Megan, and her boyfriend. Double the workout meant zero guilt having a flight of tasty beer samples and a taco bowl.

Friday 04/14/17: CrossFit
Deadlifts for a strength WOD (I PR’d!), and then a MetCon of squat clean/hanging squat clean/thruster complex plus burpees. Oof.

Saturday 04/15/17: Rest
What a glorious feeling to have an entire weekend off! We did our taxes, I did laundry, some cleaning, and played video games. It was delightful.

Sunday 04/16/17: Yard Work
Easter Sunday was mostly a day of rest, but when the sun came out in the afternoon, I couldn’t resist doing a bit of yard work. I raked up some junk, and we had a small fire just burning yard debris.

How was your Easter weekend?

Friday Free-For-All – 03/31/17

I ran again! I did another short treadmill run on Tuesday night, and I’m really, really surprised by how well it went. I honestly think CrossFit has helped me to maintain my cardiovascular fitness in spite of not having run for four months. Woohoo!

Chair massage is a life saver. We have a masseuse come to our office once a month for chair massages. It’s $15 for 15 minutes, and it’s worth every penny. I’ve had a knot in my mid-right back for over a week that just wouldn’t go away no matter how I stretched or rolled it. After 15 minutes in Deb’s chair and some hot stone and tuning fork work, I’m a new woman. Just what I needed before Hell Week kicks off tomorrow.

The artistic team gave us tonight off. This has become sort of an unofficial tradition with the last few Lyric shows, but it’s never guaranteed. Everyone has worked hard, and we’re about to go into a crazy busy and stressful week, so they decided we deserved an extra night off. 9 to 5 is in AMAZING shape, and I’m so, so grateful to have a free night. I will still go to CrossFit, but after that I will head home, get into my PJs, and spend the rest of the night relaxing with tea, Netflix, and chocolate. And maybe a beer 🙂

Do you have any fun plans for tonight, or the rest of the weekend?

Weekend Update: Pizza Party and Birthday Celebrations

This weekend was a bit more leisurely than last, thank goodness. I’m all about packing stuff in and having fun, but I need to balance those busy times with time for relaxation and catching up on life stuff. Check out what I got up to below!

Friday
I ended up skipping CrossFit to attend my first yoga class in quite a long time. My back and shoulders were feeling sore and I just felt like I needed to be in a nice, warm room and get my stretch on. Unfortunately, class was not the blissfull release I had anticipated. Firstly, I forgot my mat towel, which meant that I spent the entire class sliding all over the place and not really being able to relax at all. Then, class went 15 minutes over, meaning I was late to rehearsal. Whomp whomp.

At rehearsal, we did a run through of Act 1 and then worked a few bits. Still feeling very good about this show. I can’t wait to have an audience! Our Doralee and Mr. Hart are a real-life married couple, and they invited the whole cast and crew over to their house for a post-rehearsal pizza party. Everyone chipped in a few bucks and we did BYOB. I only had two glasses of wine, but ended up staying until 1:30 am, which is SUPER late for me. And then the roads were really bad and I almost went off the road three times and it took me twice as long to get home as it should have, so I didn’t make it into bed until almost 3 am. Ooof.

Saturday
After Friday night’s exertions, I slept until almost noon. I could have slept longer, but I really wanted to get some stuff done around the house. After a quick breakfast of egg and toast, I vacuumed the entire downstairs, put away laundry, threw in another load of laundry, and cleaned our room.

Saturday night, my friend Maria was having a birthday celebration downtown. I didn’t really want to drive into Burlington, but I’m awfully glad I did, as when I arrived, she was all by herself at the bar! I bought her a birthday drink, and then other people started showing up. I went to not one, but TWO bars on a Saturday night, and ended up staying out until 11:30. Again, really late for me.

Sunday
I would have liked to sleep in again on Sunday, but I had a costume fitting at 11 am, so I had to get up and on the road pretty quickly. My costume fitting was about as bad as I thought it would be. I left the costume shop feeling deflated and sad, and had to fight hard not to cry. I don’t have one single outfit that’s even remotely flattering, and most of them make me look downright awful.

I went to the mall for a little retail therapy and bought myself a new purse and some lunch before it was time to head to rehearsal. We did a full run of the whole show, and it went really, really well.

When I got home I had a snack and talked to my parents for a while, then ate some dinner and had a beer with Ben and my mother in law. After dinner, I had some chocolate chips and we watched the last episode of Season 1 of The Crown before an early bedtime.

This is the final week before the show opens. It’s about to get really busy around here. I’m going to do my best to get plenty of rest, eat healthy food, and not let the stress get me down.

What’s the latest you’ve stayed up recently?

So What Now?

You might have noticed that I’ve been taking this whole marathon DNF thing pretty hard. I honestly feel like I’m grieving. Like I’ve lost something that I can never get back. I’m still sorting through my feelings and trying to decide if another marathon is a) in the books at all, and b) if I want to do it sooner rather than later. It’s hard to figure out, and I’m taking my time. Of course, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t already looking at fall marathons (it’s part of the decision-making process), but NOTHING has been decided yet.

In the meantime, though, I’m trying to find something else to focus on, and THANK GOODNESS I’m already signed up for a 10k race in July.

Coaster Swag

On July 16, I’ll be running the Run or Ride 10k at the Great Escape theme park in Lake George, NY through my association with the BibRave Pro program. There are MANY reasons I’m excited for this race. Here are just a few reasons:

  1. The Great Escape is my favorite theme park
  2. My favorite rollercoaster, the Comet, is there
  3. I’m thinking a 10k PR is a distinct possibility
  4. I get TWO medals–one for running, and another for riding rollercoasters

This week is week one of my 10k training plan, and I’m VERY excited to get back to speed work and running shorter, faster distances.

I also need to re-learn how to eat like a normal person, and not a person who is training for a marathon. For the last several months, I have literally been eating whatever I want, whenever I want, with very few restrictions. For a short while after my chat with Coach Suz, things were better, and then they weren’t. I sort of mentally threw my hands up in the air and said “Fuck it! I’m marathon training. I’ll deal with this shit later.” And now it’s later and it’s time to deal with this shit. Time to back away from the sweets and the booze, dial in portion sizes, and eat a lot more fruits and veggies. Thankfully, summer is pretty much here, so it’s a lot easier to access tasty, fresh produce.

I’ll still being going to hot yoga once a week, which I’m very excited about, and I’ll be trying to incorporate even just a tiny bit of strength training into my workouts, because I know I can only benefit from it. I’m also excited to get back to running with various running clubs again. The Terrible Turtles are all WAY faster than me, but they’re fun and welcoming, so I hope to join them at least once a week for a long run, and maybe a few trail races too, which would be totally new to me.

Do you like to ride rollercoasters?

Vermont City Marathon Training Week 18
What Was Planned vs. What Happened

Monday 05/16/16: Rest | Rest
As I shared in last week’s Manic Monday post, I was feeling stressed and anxious, so I made it a point to just relax. My friend Emily had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago, so I went to visit her and played with her daughter while her husband made dinner.

Tuesday 05/17/16: 40 Minute Easy Run41 Minutes @ 10:16 Pace
I had a delightful runch with zero foot pain. Yay!

Wednesday 05/18/16: Hot Yoga | Hot Yoga
Still loving it. Before each class, the instructor asks if we have areas we’d like to work on, and I said hips, so we did lots of hip openers and I felt great!

Thursday 05/19/16: 50 Minute Progression RunSh’Bam
You may remember me talking about Sh’Bam before. It’s a cardio dance class sort of like Zumba, and my friend Brad is an instructor. This was a special class to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I was originally going to run at lunch as well, but I had to use my break time to go to the dentist instead.

Friday 05/20/16: Rest/StrengthRest
Ben and I had a nice, relaxing evening at home, and I went to bed early because I knew I had to get up to meet my running group at Athleta in the morning.

Saturday 05/21/16: 40 Minute Easy Run4.75 Miles @ 10:20 Pace
I’m pretty sure the mileage and pace is a bit off, because my Garmin didn’t have a satellite before we started, but I think that’s approximately right. It was a much more easy run than these Athleta runs have been previously, which was nice.

Sunday 05/22/16: 10 Miles10 Miles at 11:01 Pace
Coach Suz instructed me to use 4:1 intervals for this final long run, just to make sure my foot was ok. AND IT WAS! I think the intervals were a little too short for me, because I had a hard time settling into a pace, but it was worth it to have my first pain-free long run in… 3 weeks? 4 weeks? It was just the confidence boost I needed. Especially when I saw this:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFts2fDmn8X/?taken-by=raeisadarlin

Weekly Mileage: 18.75
Total 2016 Mileage: 359.8

And just like that, it’s race week. Holy crap.

Friday Free-For-All – 05/20/16

FFFA (1)

House sitting again. Ben and I will be house sitting for some family friends out in Underhill starting next Wednesday, and going until June 2. Obviously, being away from our own home and kitties so much is not ideal, but we’re really trying hard to work our “side hustles” now that Ben’s job situation has become so tenuous (we still don’t know exactly how many class sections he’ll be teaching and what his salary will be). We really want to start seriously considering buying a house or land to build on, which means we need to build up a down payment. Which means house sitting, babysitting, and both of us possibly getting part time jobs. Speaking of which…

I may be working a few hours a week at Athleta this summer. My friend Chris is the store manager, and they’re looking for extra part-time help. I put in an official application and had an interview this week, and I’m still waiting to get the official word. I think I’d really like working at Athleta, I think the extra income would be great, and I think building a relationship with them could be really good once I start having kids and maybe only work part-time.

I put my money where my mouth is and bought a 10-class pass to my hot yoga studio. At first I was sort of reluctant to pony up the cash, but when I thought about how much I’ve enjoyed going these last few weeks, and realized that laying out the cash in one lump sum would save me $5.50 per class, I bit the bullet. I’ve added buying a pass every other month as a permanent item in my budget, so I think I’ll be able to keep up with it. I’m excited to see how continuing my practice will affect my running and recovery!

THE TRUCK IS FIXED! Hallelujah and praise little baby Jesus, I have my own car again! I can’t tell you what a relief it is to know that if and when I need it, I have a car available to me. I still plan to walk to work most days, but it will be amazing to be able to run errands on lunch or immediately after work, get where I need to go, and not have to coordinate schedules with Ben every single day. FREEDOOOMMM!

Do you have your own car, or do you have to share with a spouse/family member?
