Friday Free-For-All

My orchid is blooming! A few weeks ago I mentioned that it had buds, but I wasn’t sure whether or not it would open. Well, I’ve officially got one flower, and it’s beautiful! Yay!

Three-day weekend coming up! Ben decided to take a personal day on Monday, so we have a three-day weekend, and it’s jam-packed. Friend visits, birthday parties, and visits to indoor water parks, ahoy! I can’t wait to put Vera in a little bathing suit ❤

Valentine’s Day was super low-key for us. Vera and I went out for a Galentine’s lunch with my girlfriend Nikki and her son, and then Ben and I did a simple gift exchange. I got him ointment for his dry, cracked winter hands, and he got me Sour Patch Kids and herbed goat cheese. We wrapped up the evening watching Archer in bed and going lights out at 9 pm. #romance

Are you a green thumb, or a black thumb, like me?

Friday Free-For-All

I had my first ever flat tire experience on Tuesday night. I hit a pot hole and instantly popped my right front tire. Luckily, I was able to pull into a convenience store parking lot, where I had light and people, instead of being stranded on the side of the road. I may have panicked briefly, but I’m actually well-versed in the mechanics of tire changing, so I jut got to it. I had several dudes stop and offer help, and two actually stayed for moral support until I was done, which I was grateful for. From start to finish, the change took me about 45 minutes, but most of that time was wrestling with the jack. By the time it was done I was very wet, very cold, and very dirty, but also proud of myself for handling it like the badass I am. Unfortunately, this means that, mere days after getting the CR-V back on the road (brake issues), we are now back to having only one carseat bearing car.

We’ve had some crazy bad roads lately. Lots of freezing rain and mixed precipitation have led to tons of accidents, near accidents, and school closures. Of course, not for Ben’s school. They don’t even do delayed starts because his district doesn’t own their own buses. SO MANY schools were delayed or closed yesterday, but not Ben’s. Laaaaame.

I bought Vera a dress to match the dress I’m wearing for my Disney show. It was on clearance for $4.78 and I just couldn’t NOT purchase it. I’m very much looking forward to this and many more occasions of twinning with my daughter 🙂

Coming back to fitness after pregnancy and childbirth is extremely humbling. I did 20 minutes of strength work on Tuesday–a 10 minute arm workout, and a 10 minute ab workout–and I am still embarrassingly sore. Like, had a hard time getting out of bed this morning sore. But hey, DOMS means I did some work, and work will get me where I want to go.

Have you ever had to change a flat tire?

Friday Free-For-All

I did it! I completed an entire month of streaking! I will most likely be doing some reflective posts, but for now I will say, I’m super proud of myself and so happy I did this. I’m not sure how long I can or will keep going (the laundry is kind of killing me), but I will continue to take it on a day-to-day basis.

Welcome to February. My least favorite month. I don’t know why, but February always seems like the longest, dreariest month, even though it’s actually the shortest. Here in VT, it’s usually just cold, dark, and gross out. There are no fun holidays. It’s just boring. We’re going to try to combat the doldrums by taking a little day trip over Ben’s winter break.

I’m in love with my crock pot. I know the Instant Pot is like, the trendy thing right now, but I still can’t get enough of my regular old crock pot. Especially in the winter, I use it at least once a week, if not more. It’s so convenient to just dump some stuff in, turn it on, and have dinner ready. Shredded chicken thighs for tacos? Crock pot. Chili? Crock pot. Slow-cooked veggies? Crock pot. Winner.

I’m trying to get rid of stuff. No, I’m not watching “Tidying Up.” I tried to read Marie Kondo’s book several years ago and couldn’t finish it. It was a bit… weird. I liked some of what she said, but most of it was just too new-agey. No, this has been an ongoing project for me since we bought our house. Ben and I have been toting around a lot of unnecessary junk for years, and now that we’re in our forever home, it’s time to weed out the dross so we can have a clean, organized home. I’m not going about it in a super organized fashion. Mostly just picking a small area here and there that I can attack while Vera plays or naps. I started working on my bedside table yesterday, and it’s INSANE the kind of junk that has accumulated in there: CDs, old charging cables, notebooks, pens… Ugh. I’ve got a lot of work to do.

Do you have a Crock Pot or Instant Pot? Do you use it a lot?

Friday Free-For-All

My favorite black leggings have several holes in them. I know, I know, what a first world problem, right? I’ve had them for going on three years now so it’s not like this is unexpected, but I wear these leggings multiple times a week. I got them when I was working at Athleta and still had a sweet discount. I can’t really afford to replace them right now, and I’ve never found a basic black legging that I liked as much. Not having an income is a huge bummer.

I had my first rehearsal for the Disney princess show I’m in on Tuesday. I’m very, very excited for this show, but also feeling a bit nervous because I haven’t been singing regularly for a while, so I’m rusty. Add to that the fact that I’m singing one of the most well-known and challenging songs in the Disney universe (Let it Go), and I’m a bit of a mess. I’m just trying to give myself time to get back in vocal shape and not freak out.

Vera had her six-month well child visit this week. She’s actually already almost seven months old, but our pediatrician is VERY popular and her schedule books up quickly. Our little girl is still a peanut–she’s 17th percentile for weight and 19th for height. Otherwise, though, she’s healthy and thriving and that’s what matters. She’s hitting all of the developmental milestones she should, so we’re happy.

I’m trying to “train” my hair to go longer between washes. One of the runners I follow on IG mentioned this in her stories, so I clicked over to the hairdresser she said she was following. This woman has gone up to 33 days without washing her hair. THIRTY THREE! And it still looked good! I’m not saying I want to go that long between washes (and with my fine hair and greasy scalp, I doubt I could), but right now I have to wash every other day. It’s just not very convenient when I have a lot of hair that takes a while to dry, it’s cold and wintry, and I have a small baby to take care of. If I could get to a place where I wash every three or four days, that would be ideal. Let’s see how it goes! I’m about to get very friendly with dry shampoo. And possibly hats, haha!

Have you ever heard of hair training? How often do you wash your hair?

My orchid plant has little buds! I’ve had this orchid for almost three years now, and it has NEVER flowered for me, or really even come close. I’m so exited and hope I can convince the little buds to open. Time to get some orchid fertilizer!

I ordered my first dress from ModCloth. Well, technically two dresses. I ordered the same dress in two sizes to try on for my Disney princess show. Clothes shopping is pretty tricky right now, and after an entire day of unsuccessful dress trying on in town, I decided to give online shopping a go. I got free shipping by buying two sizes, and there are free returns, so I’m hopeful that one dress will fit, and I can return the other penalty free. Fingers crossed. I really don’t feel like trying on more dresses right now.

I also got a new fitness tracker. I had a FitBit for a hot second a few years ago, but it popped off my wrist somewhere (stupid bands!) and I never bothered to replace it. But since I’m doing most of my runs on a treadmill and my Garmin doesn’t seem to want to track treadmill runs anymore, I figured a $30 fitness tracker was a worthwhile investment. It has several sport modes, and does sleep and heart rate tracking, so that will be some interesting data to have. I already knew I wasn’t getting much sleep, but being confronted with actual numbers is painful. #momlife

We’re supposed to get a foot of snow this weekend. We’ve already had a very cold and snowy start to the winter, but we’re expected to get about a foot on Sunday alone! Ben and I are not-so-secretly hoping he’ll get a snow day on Monday.

Are you expecting snow this weekend? Do you use a fitness tracker?

The #rbdrunstreak2019 is still going strong! I’m now 11 days in and feeling really good. I’m focusing on doing plenty of stretching and rolling, and trying to alternate “longer” runs with single mile days. I definitely feel like my stamina is improving, and I’m starting to feel like a runner again. I like it!

I did a couple of small car “maintenance” projects that have been on my list FOREVER. First, I changed the bulb in the overhead light. You know, the one that turns on when you open the car door? Ours blew a while ago, and it’s crazy how much you actually need that little light during dark winter nights, especially with a baby and all the attendant crap in the car. I also changed the auto-unlock settings. Since we bought our car, the settings have been that when we turn the car off, ONLY the driver’s door automatically unlocks, which is not a big deal, but can be inconvenient, especially, again, with a baby. Nothing is more annoying than trying to open the door to put the car seat in and having the door still be locked. I’m SO HAPPY to have done these two things. The last thing on my list is to get the battery in my fob replaced so I can use the lock/unlock buttons again. That’s another one of those things that becomes kind of important when you’re juggling a car seat, diaper bag, purse, and shopping bags.

Instagram targeted ads totally got me. I ordered a SheFit Apparel Ultimate Sports Bra last week after seeing them advertised. As has been covered pretty much ad nauseum on this blog, I am a busty runner, and have a hard time finding sports bras that cover the nexus of affordability, comfort, and support. The SheFit has pretty awesome fit and support, and a decent price, but I’m having some chafing issues at the moment. Stay tuned for a full review later.

I was cast in a show this week! It’s a Disney princesses and villains cabaret for kids. I am super rusty, so I just went in with zero expectations, more to get the feel for auditioning again and see my friends than with any thought that I might be cast. But lo, and behold, I got it! And I’m singing Let it Go from Frozen and Mother Knows Best from Tangled. No pressure, right? I can’t wait for rehearsals to start!

Have you ever changed the settings on your car or changed a bulb yourself?

Friday Free-For-All

I’m trying to get back to blogging a bit more regularly. As you may have noticed from the whole two posts this week. Go me! I missed checking it with you all, but I’m still struggling with what I want to share these days. Life with a non-sleeping baby makes it really hard to accomplish much, especially working out. I’m so exhausted most days that the thought of running or trying to go back to CrossFit is laughable. But I’m still here, still living life, so I’m trying to keep blogging.

Fall didn’t last very long in northern Vermont. We’ve had heavy snow cover for several weeks already, and I don’t think it’s going away any time soon. While I’m sad about the shortness of my favorite season, I’m already excited for Christmas, so I can’t be too upset about it.

Our house hasn’t had power since early Tuesday morning. All of the heavy, wet snow led to some power outages in our area. Because our heat, water pump, and stove are all electric powered, it means no water, no heat, and no cooking. Thankfully, my in-laws only live 15 minutes away, so we’ve all been staying with Grammy and Pop. I am so blessed to have such a great relationship with my in-laws, and they are wonderful with Vera. My father in law brought his generator to the house to power the small propane heater on our porch and our freezer to keep the pipes from freezing and protect our food. Fingers crossed our power comes back soon!

Have you ever had to deal with an extended power outage?

I am now the proud owner of a treadmill! I put a call out on my local Front Porch Forum, and actually received a ton of offers of used treadmills. Not only did I find one in good shape, the seller delivered it straight to our house, yay! While I fully intend for most of my runs to be out on the rail trail, the days are about to get a lot darker, colder, and snowier, so having a treadmill means that I will be able to keep up with running this winter.

We have a leak in our roof. Joy. We’ve had a few really rainy days lately, and on one particularly rainy day I noticed a dripping sound in our laundry room. I looked up and saw a hole in the sheet rock, dripping water. Blerg. Gonna have to get that fixed before winter.

Postpartum hair loss has kicked in. Double joy. For those who don’t know, it’s pretty normal for a woman to start losing clumps of hair around three months postpartum. Pregnancy hormones cause you not to shed hair as you normally would, and once your hormones return to normal, all of the hair you should have shed during pregnancy all starts to come out at once. It’s alarming, and gross, and just another part of that oh-so-magical pregnancy journey.

Homeowners, have you ever had a leaky roof?

We ordered hardwood flooring! Our living room and both bedrooms currently have old, ugly, stained carpet. We were originally going to wait a year or two, but we decided we couldn’t live with the carpets anymore, especially with a baby who will be crawling before we know it. We got a great deal on some red oak, and we will be installing it sometime in October. I can’t wait!

I changed out my nose stud for a ring. I wanted to get a ring to start with, but the place I went for the piercing does studs standard, so I had to wait six weeks for the piercing to heal. I got a nice little rose gold-plated ring on Etsy to match my ear piercing, and I’m very happy!

Baby yoga is so much fun! Our class on Mondays is truly delightful. We sing, we move, and we learn massage techniques to help with gassy, fussy babies. I also met another new mom who lives in my town and we exchanged contact info, so I’m hopeful for future play dates. I’m just sad the class series is only six weeks long.

What’s one home improvement project you’re dying to tackle?

Friday Free-For-All

The truck is once again in the shop. The brakes were shot, so Ben and his dad started the job, only to find out that the parts they bought were wrong. It’s been over a week now that the truck has been out of commission, so we’ve been borrowing a car from my in-laws when possible. I’m carless today, which is proving to be challenging because…

Vera is going through a three-month growth spurt and I am in ROUGH shape. She’s been super cranky while she’s awake, eating every 1.5 hours, and waking a lot more often during the night. My typically calm, easy-going baby is basically just screaming the entire time she’s awake. I’m just trying to remember that this is temporary, and will pass. But damn am I tired. And being trapped in the house is making it harder to deal.

Thank goodness for the automated Rock ‘n’ Play my Aunt Beth gifted us. It has a vibrate mode that seems to mimic the motion of a carseat, which helps Vera fall asleep and stay asleep longer. She’s been taking at least one big long nap during the day after being so fussy at night. I’m planning to move it into our bedroom tonight and see if it will help us all sleep better.

Any tips for dealing with a sad, fussy baby?
