A Return to Manic Monday!

Manic Monday

Wow, it’s been a while since I did one of these! But it seemed appropriate, seeing as I’m actually sort of in training for several races in May. And this past week was one of the best I’ve had workout-wise in quite some time. Here we go!

Monday 03/27/17: CrossFit+Rehearsal
I’m not sure how in-depth I’ll go with CF workouts (are you guys interested in this?), but here’s the basic gist: we worked on Front Squats (2 rep max), and then did 5 rounds for time of 10-8-6-4-2 Squat Cleans, 15 pushups, and 15 situps. It was HARD and I only made it to the “4” round before time was up. After CF we did a full run of the show at rehearsal.

Tuesday 03/28/17: 2.5 Mile Run
I did a quarter mile walking warm up, then started at an 11 minute per mile pace, and upped the speed 1 notch every quarter of a mile, finishing the final quarter mile at about a 9:20 per mile pace, which is AWESOME.

Wednesday 03/29/17: CrossFit+Rehearsal
We worked on Chest Presses (I upped my weight 15 pounds from last time), and did an AMRAP (as many reps as possible) workout 12 minutes total of 5 Deadlifts, 10 handstand push-ups (which I do from a box because I’m not strong enough to do full ones yet), and 150 meters of rowing. I made it through 4 full rounds plus 1 Deadlift before time. And then we did another full run-through at rehearsal.

Thursday 03/30/17: Rest
I intended to go to hot yoga, but about halfway through my commute, I realized I’d forgotten my mat towel again. I didn’t want to “waste” a class sliding all over the place and feeling annoyed, so I just went home.

Friday 03/31/17: CrossFit
My forgetfulness struck again; I forgot socks, so I forewent my CF class and just went home to relax on my last night off for the foreseeable future.

Saturday 04/01/17: Rest
We had a three hour orchestra rehearsal in the morning, but after that, I was able to go grocery shopping, and do some stuff around the house before date night with Ben ❤ We had drinks with one of his colleagues at First Republic Brewery, and then went to Prohibition Pig in Waterbury for dinner. And then we passed out at 9:30 watching Netflix because we’re old.

Sunday 04/02/17: 11 Hour Tech Rehearsal/Active Rest
It was a long, long day. We didn’t finish at the theatre until 11:30 pm, at which point I still had to drive a half hour home, so I didn’t get into bed until close to 1 am. And then I was up at 6:15 to come to work this morning.

I woke up this morning with a sore throat, which is NOT GOOD. At all. I picked up some Zicam and other emergency cold supplies, and took a shot of Fire Cider this morning. I’m hoping I can burn it out of myself before it gets too serious. Fingers crossed!

Friday Free-For-All – 03/31/17

I ran again! I did another short treadmill run on Tuesday night, and I’m really, really surprised by how well it went. I honestly think CrossFit has helped me to maintain my cardiovascular fitness in spite of not having run for four months. Woohoo!

Chair massage is a life saver. We have a masseuse come to our office once a month for chair massages. It’s $15 for 15 minutes, and it’s worth every penny. I’ve had a knot in my mid-right back for over a week that just wouldn’t go away no matter how I stretched or rolled it. After 15 minutes in Deb’s chair and some hot stone and tuning fork work, I’m a new woman. Just what I needed before Hell Week kicks off tomorrow.

The artistic team gave us tonight off. This has become sort of an unofficial tradition with the last few Lyric shows, but it’s never guaranteed. Everyone has worked hard, and we’re about to go into a crazy busy and stressful week, so they decided we deserved an extra night off. 9 to 5 is in AMAZING shape, and I’m so, so grateful to have a free night. I will still go to CrossFit, but after that I will head home, get into my PJs, and spend the rest of the night relaxing with tea, Netflix, and chocolate. And maybe a beer 🙂

Do you have any fun plans for tonight, or the rest of the weekend?

Weekend Update: Pizza Party and Birthday Celebrations

This weekend was a bit more leisurely than last, thank goodness. I’m all about packing stuff in and having fun, but I need to balance those busy times with time for relaxation and catching up on life stuff. Check out what I got up to below!

I ended up skipping CrossFit to attend my first yoga class in quite a long time. My back and shoulders were feeling sore and I just felt like I needed to be in a nice, warm room and get my stretch on. Unfortunately, class was not the blissfull release I had anticipated. Firstly, I forgot my mat towel, which meant that I spent the entire class sliding all over the place and not really being able to relax at all. Then, class went 15 minutes over, meaning I was late to rehearsal. Whomp whomp.

At rehearsal, we did a run through of Act 1 and then worked a few bits. Still feeling very good about this show. I can’t wait to have an audience! Our Doralee and Mr. Hart are a real-life married couple, and they invited the whole cast and crew over to their house for a post-rehearsal pizza party. Everyone chipped in a few bucks and we did BYOB. I only had two glasses of wine, but ended up staying until 1:30 am, which is SUPER late for me. And then the roads were really bad and I almost went off the road three times and it took me twice as long to get home as it should have, so I didn’t make it into bed until almost 3 am. Ooof.

After Friday night’s exertions, I slept until almost noon. I could have slept longer, but I really wanted to get some stuff done around the house. After a quick breakfast of egg and toast, I vacuumed the entire downstairs, put away laundry, threw in another load of laundry, and cleaned our room.

Saturday night, my friend Maria was having a birthday celebration downtown. I didn’t really want to drive into Burlington, but I’m awfully glad I did, as when I arrived, she was all by herself at the bar! I bought her a birthday drink, and then other people started showing up. I went to not one, but TWO bars on a Saturday night, and ended up staying out until 11:30. Again, really late for me.

I would have liked to sleep in again on Sunday, but I had a costume fitting at 11 am, so I had to get up and on the road pretty quickly. My costume fitting was about as bad as I thought it would be. I left the costume shop feeling deflated and sad, and had to fight hard not to cry. I don’t have one single outfit that’s even remotely flattering, and most of them make me look downright awful.

I went to the mall for a little retail therapy and bought myself a new purse and some lunch before it was time to head to rehearsal. We did a full run of the whole show, and it went really, really well.

When I got home I had a snack and talked to my parents for a while, then ate some dinner and had a beer with Ben and my mother in law. After dinner, I had some chocolate chips and we watched the last episode of Season 1 of The Crown before an early bedtime.

This is the final week before the show opens. It’s about to get really busy around here. I’m going to do my best to get plenty of rest, eat healthy food, and not let the stress get me down.

What’s the latest you’ve stayed up recently?

Weekend Update: Family Visits, LuLaRoe, and Taco Night

Happy Monday, all! This weekend went by in a blur. They just never seem long enough!

Work–>CrossFit–>Rehearsal is my usual Friday night schedule. We were released a bit early, which was excellent, because Ben’s uncle Bill and cousin Justin decided to make an impromtu visit to see Grammy before Justin moves to Colorado in a couple of weeks. I arrived home just before they did, and managed to start a fire in the woodstove by myself for the first time ever! We had a few drinks and chatted for a while, and I went to bed around midnight. They stayed up until the wee hours!

I slept in until about 9:30, then got up to find breakfast-making already in full swing. Ben and uncle Bill made bacon, eggs, and home fries, yum!

We were supposed to take Grammy out for lunch, but breakfast ended up being more like lunch, so we went for an afternoon visit instead. We chatted for an hour or so, and then I headed over to my friend Abbie’s house for a LuLaRoe party. I was a good girl and only bought one shirt, even though there were at least five other things I wanted. I wish I’d had more time to chat and hang out, but I needed to head back and pick up Ben for taco night at our friends David and Alex’s house.

I decided to DD for the night, and we carpooled with our friends Merlin and Kat. The food was delicious, and the company was excellent, but we stayed out a bit later than I would have liked. I’m such an old lady these days. I didn’t get into bed until after 1 am, and I was WIPED.

I slept in again after our late night, then got up and did my usual Sunday morning tidy up. I tend to just let everything pile up during the week and then do a big clean on the weekend. Not ideal, but it’s what I can manage right now.

We had 9 to 5 rehearsal at the Flynn today, which is always a treat. It’s such a beautiful theatre, it makes me feel like a star every time I get to be on that stage. We did a full run through of the show, and it has really come together over the last week or so. It’s very exciting to be at this point and still have so much time to work and polish stuff before we open on the 6th!

Looking out into that audience is one of my favorite views in the world

I’m starting the week off a bit behind the eight ball because I neglected to do any meal prep this weekend. I’m hoping that I can make it through Monday and Tuesday, and then do some cooking tomorrow night for the rest of the week.

Do you like to stay up late, or are you like me, and go to bed early?

Weekend Update: Mardi Gras and Freezing Cold

Happy Monday, friends. Winter returned to the Northeast with a vengeance this weekend. Temps were in the negatives all weekend, and now we’re supposed to get a foot or more of snow this week. Eep! Let’s take a look at what I got up to this weekend.

CrossFit–>rehearsal–>home as usual. Everybody was in bed by the time I got home so I just went straight to bed.

I got up around 8 to cram a few things in before heading into town for Mardi Gras. Yes, we celebrate Mardi Gras in Vermont. Yes, we do it on a Saturday. In March. We’re special. I know.

I cleaned the bathroom and neatened up some stuff in our room, then got dressed and headed into town to meet my friend Brita for a drink before the parade. Then, we did some pre-game drinking at my friends’ salon right down the street. I may have had one more drink than completely necessary, and ended up on the front page of the Burlington Free Press website singing my face off while everyone else is posing nicely for the camera. I blame the Hamilton soundtrack…

After the parade, we went to the Hilton Garden Inn, where I did NOT have anything to drink, and hung out chatting and sobering up for a while. I was meeting Ben and some of our other friends for dinner and to see Logan so I left a little before 5. I absolutely housed half of a buffalo chicken pizza, chugged some water, and felt a lot better. Logan was pretty good. I honestly didn’t really know what it was about other than Wolverine, but I liked it a lot. Much grittier than other X-Men movies.

By the time the movie was over, I was exhausted. Ben and I went home, watched one episode of The Crown, and I passed out.

Sunday was another early morning for me, because I wanted to hit up the Athleta friends and family sale before rehearsal. I got a new pair of capris, with POCKETS, and a pair of shorts for summer. About half my wardrobe at this point is from Athleta, and I’m not mad about it.

Rehearsal was a long one. We’re at the point now where we’re putting larger chunks of the show together, which is always difficult and time-consuming. I was tired and cranky, but we got through it and I was home a little after five. I didn’t do any meal prep yesterday, which is likely to bite me in the ass later this week, but I think I can get it done tomorrow night. Fingers crossed.

And now it’s Monday. My first full week at work since coming back from vacation. And we’re in for a huge snowstorm tomorrow. Ugh. Bring on all the coffee.

Are you in for snow in your neck of the woods this week?

Weekend Update -Seafood Extravaganza!

Happy Monday, all! I hope your weekend was as good as mine, because it is definitely helping to buoy my spirits today. Everyone in the fam got to stay home today except for me, my commute blew because of snow, and then I dumped my entire Dunkin Donuts coffee moments after arriving at work. It’s been a doozy of a Monday already, and it’s not even 9 am…

Friday night was pretty full–CrossFit from 5-6, rehearsal from 6:45-10, and post-rehearsal drinks until a bit later than I would have liked, but it was too fun to pass up. Sometimes you just need to eat french fries and nurse a vodka and soda until 11:30 pm. Ben actually texted me all worried because I NEVER stay out that late, haha!

I slept in until almost ten, then loafed around for a bit, reading, sipping coffee, and eating breakfast. After that, it was time to clean house. I vacuumed the first and second floors, did laundry, and cleaned our room, then played video games for a bit, and read some more until company arrived.

Earlier in the week, my father in law had sent out a group text that he would be going to Maine this weekend, and bringing back whatever we wanted for what he called “Seafood Extravaganza.” We invited a bunch of family friends over, everyone ordered whatever they desired, and we just ate delicious, fresh-caught oysters, lobster, and steamed clams all night. Oh, and of course, had some libations as well.

I got up pretty early on Sunday considering two late nights in a row. I was feeling overtired and a little headachey–it turns out that seafood isn’t a great base for drinking. Oops! After some breakfast and some coffee, though, I was right as rain. I did some meal prep stuff for the week, put away my clean laundry, and read until it was time to go to rehearsal.

The promised snowstorm had already arrived, so it was slow going, but I made it into town without incident and had a fun dance rehearsal. Due to the snow, they ended up releasing us an hour early, which was great, considering that my commute is one of the longest. It also worked out well because we were having company for supper, so I was able to get home in time to help clean up and make food.

We had some fresh steamed shrimp (held back from seafood extravaganza) as an appetizer, and had homemade chicken curry with winter root vegetable slaw for the main meal.

Right before our guests arrived, Ben got the phone call that he had a snow day today, so the evening had a somewhat celebratory air, even though I sadly didn’t get a snow day. I went to bed promptly at 10:15, but Ben stayed up reading for a while since he didn’t have to get up for work today. Color me jealous.

How many of you had a snow day today? I really regret not using a vacation day and just staying home…

(Long) Weekend Update – Rehearsal, CrossFit, and Bonus Day

Happy Tuesday, friends! I had a long weekend due to Martin Luther King Jr day, so today is my first day at work this week, and it’s been a bit of a slow start. Let’s delay the inevitable a few moments longer with a look back at my long weekend.

Friday evening I went to my first-ever actual Crossfit class, and it went great! I’ll go more in depth on Wednesday, but for now I’ll say, I’m planning to stick with it for a while! After CF, I had a three hour dance rehearsal for 9 to 5. Thankfully, my endorphins were running hot after a great workout, so I felt amazing and awake all evening. I went straight home after rehearsal, had a beer with Ben and my in-laws, and went to bed.

Saturday was a great, lazy day, because I knew I also had Monday to give me some extra time for all my usual weekend chores. I spent the morning tidying up our room a bit, and then spent most of the afternoon playing Fallout 3. #cantstopwontstop. In the evening, we got spiffed up for a party in town, but first, we stopped by Grammy’s room at Sterling House to drop off a belated Christmas present and chat for a few minutes.

The annual January Thaw party hosted by my friends Freda and Michael was a blast. Lots of my favorite people, way too much food, and a few too many servings of vodka for me made for a very good time. Ben was my gallant DD, who also forced me to chug water and take an Advil before I went to bed.

Sunday started off a bit rough for me. I drank a bunch of water and took some more ibuprofen, which started to even things out a bit, but then my father in law made a magnificent feast of steak, eggs, and fried potatoes and I was well on my way to recovery.

On the way in for rehearsal, I bought a large coffee, some Polar seltzer, and some beef jerky, and that was the final piece of the hangover cure; after that I felt totally fine, and had a great time dancing my butt off at rehearsal.

I was SUPER productive on Monday. After breakfast I did laundry, loaded my new musical soundtracks from Christmas into my iTunes library, meal prepped all my lunches and dinners for the week, and cleaned the bathroom. After lunch, I decided I was done with productivity and played Fallout 3 for about an hour and a half, and then it was time to get myself together for CrossFit and rehearsal.

After a quick wash, some clean clothes, and gathering up all my stuff, I headed into town for my second CF class, which was just as good as my first, and left me full of energy. Rehearsal was a quick one; I was in and out in an hour, which meant that I got to come home, have an actual dinner, finish this blog post, and read before bed. Woot!

I’m realizing that I really should start taking more picture to accompany these posts, otherwise it’s just a whole lotta words. I’m just not very good about thinking in the moment “Oh, hey, I should take a picture for the blog!” And half the time when I DO think of it, I’m too embarrassed to whip out my phone to take a picture “for my blog.” Ah well. I’ll figure it out.

Did you have a long weekend? What did you do with your “extra” day?

Weekend Update: CrossFit, Cooking, and Rehearsal

Good morning, lovies! It’s Monday morning, and all of our network drives are down, meaning I literally cannot do any work. Wheee! I’m drinking some tea, bullet-journaling, and trying to massage my very sore quads. Let’s take a look at what I got up to this weekend, shall we?

I had rehearsal until 10 on Friday night, and when I got home, Ben, Emily, and my mother in law were out at a nice little bonfire in the yard, so I changed into some warm clothes, grabbed a beer, and joined them for a few minutes. They were actually about to head inside when I arrived home, but it was nice to enjoy the bonfire for a bit. After that we headed straight to bed.

I was up bright and early so I’d have time to eat before my CrossFit intro class. I was pretty nervous all morning, but managed to get there on time with minimal stressing out. I’ll write a larger post on this later this week, but I actually kind of liked it, and will likely be giving it a chance for a month or two.

After I got home, I showered, did laundry, and cleaned up our room a bit, and then basically spent the rest of the afternoon playing Fallout 3 in my PJs. It was glorious. Emily’s friends Liz and Beck came over for dinner, and we had lasagna with salad and an amazing cheesy, garlicky bread thing, with chocolate cake for dessert. I ate way too much, but it was worth it. We ended up going to bed super early, which I think I needed. I slept like a rock until 8:30 Sunday morning.

I knew I wanted to get some meal prep stuff done before rehearsal, so I got right up and started getting my shit together. I made a huge batch of beans and rice that I divided up into containers for the rest of the week. It didn’t make quite as much as I was hoping, but I should have enough to cover lunches and dinners on rehearsal days in case there aren’t leftovers to snag.

Then it was Nine to Five rehearsal from 1 until 5 pm. I was pretty sore from CrossFit, so dancing and stretching out felt good. Rehearsal was a blast, and I feel really good about my role and the stuff I get to do. They ended up releasing us about 15 minutes early, which was excellent, because I was meeting Ben and the family at some friends’ house for dinner, and it was a bit of a drive.

I arrived at Chris and Jeff’s only about 10 minutes after everyone else, and enjoyed a really nice evening of delicious food, drink, and conversation. We were home by 9:30 and in bed by 10, ready for another week.

This will be my first full week of work in almost three weeks, so I’m anticipating a rough go of it. If my computer issues this morning are any indicator, it’s going to be VERY rough. But I have a few nice things to look forward to this week, so I’m just trying to buck up and deal.

When’s the last time you had a bonfire?

Post-Holiday Funk

It’s real, folks. I wrote a bit on Monday about how I’m feeling the post-holiday hangover, and it hasn’t really gotten better. I’ve been sleeping like crap, and I haven’t worked out once this week. I actually skipped my Wednesday 6 am spin class today for the first time in about 7 weeks.

You might be thinking that I feel badly about this, or am worried about it. And under normal circumstances, I might be. Having no motivation sucks, and not working out isn’t good for my short-term or long-term health. But here’s the thing: marathon training starts next week. AND Mary Poppins rehearsals. Shit is about to get really, really busy, and really, really structured.

So I’m just kind of enjoying my last week of freedom. Instead of hauling my ass to the gym after work, I can just change into my PJs and play Skyrim for a few hours. Instead of getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to go to spin, I can stay in my cozy, warm bed and snuggle my kitties for another hour.

I’m also focusing hard on meal planning and prep, grocery shopping, and getting myself back into a normal sleep and eating schedule. The holidays hit me hard in those areas, and I’m working diligently to make sure that once things start to get crazy (probably next week), I have some infrastructure in place that will keep me healthy and happy. Very little guilt or worry here 🙂

Are you having trouble bouncing back after the holidays?

Friday Free-For-All – 08/14/15

FFFA (1)

Remember how I’m gonna be on live TV on Monday? Well, it turns out I WILL actually be performing one of my songs, as well as a group number. Yikes! But this is good news because they usually put the segments on the website, which means I can share links with you guys and you can actually see me sing! Cool, right?

I may ditch run club tomorrow and do 7 miles solo instead. I love run club, but attending Saturday morning runs means splitting my long runs up into two chunks. While this is a great mental break and I love seeing my friends, I worry that not doing my long run mileage all at the same time is bad training for a half marathon. I don’t want to get used to having a big break right in the middle of my long runs. Every once in a while I just need to do them all in one shot.

I have a 12+ hour rehearsal on Sunday.  “Tech rehearsal” is the first rehearsal where we add all of the technical elements to the show–lights, sound cues, microphones, and in the case of this show, projections. We’re using custom-designed projections instead of any set pieces, which is REALLY cool, but will also take a lot of finessing to get right. It may be a looooooooong day. I plan to bring plenty of snacks and wear comfy clothes. They’re also buying us dinner, which is super nice.

In light of all of the above, I think a nap is in order tomorrow. I can’t remember the last time I took a nap, but I think one will be necessary tomorrow. That is, after I run 7 miles, do laundry, and go grocery shopping. Oy.

Do you ever break your long run up into chunks?
