Weekend Update: CrossFit, Cooking, and Rehearsal

Good morning, lovies! It’s Monday morning, and all of our network drives are down, meaning I literally cannot do any work. Wheee! I’m drinking some tea, bullet-journaling, and trying to massage my very sore quads. Let’s take a look at what I got up to this weekend, shall we?

Friday

I had rehearsal until 10 on Friday night, and when I got home, Ben, Emily, and my mother in law were out at a nice little bonfire in the yard, so I changed into some warm clothes, grabbed a beer, and joined them for a few minutes. They were actually about to head inside when I arrived home, but it was nice to enjoy the bonfire for a bit. After that we headed straight to bed.

Saturday

I was up bright and early so I’d have time to eat before my CrossFit intro class. I was pretty nervous all morning, but managed to get there on time with minimal stressing out. I’ll write a larger post on this later this week, but I actually kind of liked it, and will likely be giving it a chance for a month or two.

After I got home, I showered, did laundry, and cleaned up our room a bit, and then basically spent the rest of the afternoon playing Fallout 3 in my PJs. It was glorious. Emily’s friends Liz and Beck came over for dinner, and we had lasagna with salad and an amazing cheesy, garlicky bread thing, with chocolate cake for dessert. I ate way too much, but it was worth it. We ended up going to bed super early, which I think I needed. I slept like a rock until 8:30 Sunday morning.

Sunday

I knew I wanted to get some meal prep stuff done before rehearsal, so I got right up and started getting my shit together. I made a huge batch of beans and rice that I divided up into containers for the rest of the week. It didn’t make quite as much as I was hoping, but I should have enough to cover lunches and dinners on rehearsal days in case there aren’t leftovers to snag.

Then it was Nine to Five rehearsal from 1 until 5 pm. I was pretty sore from CrossFit, so dancing and stretching out felt good. Rehearsal was a blast, and I feel really good about my role and the stuff I get to do. They ended up releasing us about 15 minutes early, which was excellent, because I was meeting Ben and the family at some friends’ house for dinner, and it was a bit of a drive.

I arrived at Chris and Jeff’s only about 10 minutes after everyone else, and enjoyed a really nice evening of delicious food, drink, and conversation. We were home by 9:30 and in bed by 10, ready for another week.

This will be my first full week of work in almost three weeks, so I’m anticipating a rough go of it. If my computer issues this morning are any indicator, it’s going to be VERY rough. But I have a few nice things to look forward to this week, so I’m just trying to buck up and deal.

Post-Holiday Funk

It’s real, folks. I wrote a bit on Monday about how I’m feeling the post-holiday hangover, and it hasn’t really gotten better. I’ve been sleeping like crap, and I haven’t worked out once this week. I actually skipped my Wednesday 6 am spin class today for the first time in about 7 weeks.

You might be thinking that I feel badly about this, or am worried about it. And under normal circumstances, I might be. Having no motivation sucks, and not working out isn’t good for my short-term or long-term health. But here’s the thing: marathon training starts next week. AND Mary Poppins rehearsals. Shit is about to get really, really busy, and really, really structured.

So I’m just kind of enjoying my last week of freedom. Instead of hauling my ass to the gym after work, I can just change into my PJs and play Skyrim for a few hours. Instead of getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to go to spin, I can stay in my cozy, warm bed and snuggle my kitties for another hour.

I’m also focusing hard on meal planning and prep, grocery shopping, and getting myself back into a normal sleep and eating schedule. The holidays hit me hard in those areas, and I’m working diligently to make sure that once things start to get crazy (probably next week), I have some infrastructure in place that will keep me healthy and happy. Very little guilt or worry here 🙂

Friday Free-For-All – 08/14/15

Remember how I’m gonna be on live TV on Monday? Well, it turns out I WILL actually be performing one of my songs, as well as a group number. Yikes! But this is good news because they usually put the segments on the website, which means I can share links with you guys and you can actually see me sing! Cool, right?

I may ditch run club tomorrow and do 7 miles solo instead. I love run club, but attending Saturday morning runs means splitting my long runs up into two chunks. While this is a great mental break and I love seeing my friends, I worry that not doing my long run mileage all at the same time is bad training for a half marathon. I don’t want to get used to having a big break right in the middle of my long runs. Every once in a while I just need to do them all in one shot.

I have a 12+ hour rehearsal on Sunday.  “Tech rehearsal” is the first rehearsal where we add all of the technical elements to the show–lights, sound cues, microphones, and in the case of this show, projections. We’re using custom-designed projections instead of any set pieces, which is REALLY cool, but will also take a lot of finessing to get right. It may be a looooooooong day. I plan to bring plenty of snacks and wear comfy clothes. They’re also buying us dinner, which is super nice.

In light of all of the above, I think a nap is in order tomorrow. I can’t remember the last time I took a nap, but I think one will be necessary tomorrow. That is, after I run 7 miles, do laundry, and go grocery shopping. Oy.

Manic Monday – 04/06/15

Well, here we are–show week for Legally Blonde! It feels like just yesterday that I was excitedly announcing I’d been cast, and how much I was looking forward to it. Yikes! This past week was busy, and this coming week will be even more so. I’m trying to squeeze in activity where I can, but honestly, rehearsals are a workout in and of themselves, so I don’t feel bad about letting my normal routine go out the window. Especially since I had a 13 hour rehearsal yesterday and didn’t get to bed until 1 am. Ouch.

Monday 03/30/15:  Lunchtime walk–49 minutes, 3.18 miles. The weather was cold and gray and spitting snow, but it was still nice to get out of the office and get my body moving. We also did a full run-through of the show, so I did plenty of dancing and jumping rope at rehearsal.

Tuesday 03/31/15:  Lunchtime walk–49 minutes, 3.47 miles. It was still pretty cold, but the sun was out, so I was able to soak up some much-needed vitamin D. I also did 10 push ups, 10 triceps dips, a 30 second plank, and a 30 second plank on each side before bed.

Wednesday 04/01/15:  Rest Day.  Work was nutty, so I was scrambling to get lunch on my break, and wasn’t able to get my walk in. I did do some shopping and walking around after work, though. And of course, dancing and jumping rope at Legally Blonde rehearsal.

Thursday 04/02/15:  Rest Day. I just didn’t feel like doing anything other than eating and sitting during lunch, so I didn’t. I ended up going to bed at 8:45 pm. I think I was just feeling super run down.

Friday 04/03/15:  Rest Day. This was my awesome evening off. I had a few drinks with Ben and my in-laws, and went to bed at 10 pm. 

Saturday 04/04/15:  Rest Day. This was a mostly relaxing day. The only sour note was driving in to town (about 45 minutes) only to find out that the scheduled rehearsal had been cancelled while I was driving in. Boo. But Ben and I made the best of it by having an impromptu date night of pizza and beer. Then I want home, changed into my PJs, and watched movies for a while before bed.

Sunday 04/05/15:  Tech Day. This was a looooong and frustrating day. Lots of hurry up and wait. Lots of just plain wait. Lots of frayed tempers and punchy, overtired laughter. I got to the theater at 11 am and didn’t leave until 12 am. 

I’m gonna be honest, when my alarm went off this morning, I kind of wanted to die. I’m clutching my large Dunkies iced coffee and praying for the strength to make it through today without physically harming anyone. And I get to go back to the theater at 5:30 and do it all over again. I’m trying to remind myself that I signed up for this, that this is in fact something I love to do, and just keep a positive attitude.

The focus for this week is staying healthy. Eating as well as I can, sleeping as much as I can, and hydrating like a BOSS. The theater is more dry than the Sahara, I swear it just sucks the moisture right out of you. The good news is, the end is in sight. After Sunday, I’ll have a glorious month and a half free from rehearsals, so I can get back to running, hit up some Body Pump classes, and generally get back on track.

Friday Free-For-All – 04/03/15

This will be my first Friday night off since January! Because rehearsals have been going so well recently, the artistic team decided to give us the night off before we move into the big theater this weekend and go into crazy, rehearsal every night mode. I can’t even tell you how excited I am to just GO HOME after work tonight and hang out. I’m going to put my PJs on immediately and veg out all night. Yay! Speaking of rehearsals…

This weekend kicks off “Hell Week.” In the theater world, the week before a show opens is officially known as Tech Week. This is when you add all the technical elements like costumes, lighting, sound etc to the performance. It’s a LOT of work–lots of late nights, frayed tempers, and frustration. This causes it to be known unofficially as “Hell Week.” I don’t anticipate getting much sleep next week. And workouts? Ha! I’ll be lucky if I have time to eat.

It’s warm today! In the mid-fifties! Kind of sunny! Hopefully this will melt the remaining snow and really kick spring off. Of course, it’s supposed to be cold again this weekend, sooo…

Manic Monday – 03/30/15

Week one of no running, giving my shins a break while I jump rope like a crazy lady during the final weeks of Legally Blonde rehearsals and shows.

Monday 03/23/15:  Lunchtime walk. 40 minutes, 2.6 miles. Then plenty of jumping rope and dancing at rehearsal.

Tuesday 03/24/15:  Lunchtime walk. 51 minutes, 3.36 miles. After work I didn’t do much other than help with dinner and relax.

Wednesday 03/25/15:  Lunchtime walk. 47 minutes, 3.25 miles. Rehearsal was more jumping and dancing. And then I stayed out way too late getting my karaoke on and celebrating my friend Erik’s birthday.

Thursday 03/26/15:  Rest day. Ben and I cooked dinner and I went to bed at 9 pm to recover from Wednesday night’s shenanigans.

Friday 03/27/15:  Rest day. Rehearsal was a long night, and then we had to celebrate Ben’s graduation, so we stayed up late drinking beers and listening to music.

Saturday 03/28/15:  Rest day. I’m not ashamed to say that I slept until noon. I can’t remember the last time I slept that late, but I know I needed it. I spent the day doing laundry, cleaning, and knitting. Ben’s parents went out to dinner, so Grammie made dinner and we played cards until a reasonable bed time of 11 pm.

Sunday 03/29/15:  Rest day. I got up relatively early and made a good breakfast, then went for a costume fitting and afternoon rehearsal. Afterwards, Ben and I went over to Erik’s house for delicious homemade burgers and cinematic adventures. In hindsight, it would have been better to just go home and go to bed, but it was nice to spend some time with our friend.

I’m planning to keep up with my lunchtime walks as much as possible this week, and try to do some body weight exercises at home, just so I don’t totally lose fitness. In a couple more weeks, Legally Blonde will be over, and I can re-establish a gym pattern. I’m excited to get back to CXWORX and Body Pump, and maybe add in some spinning. I’m also contemplating some personal training sessions, but I may talk more about that later.
