Friday Free-For-All – 10/06/17

We’ve been looking at houses. Yay! It’s still early times, but I figure, the more stuff we look at, the more it will help us zero in on what’s important to us, what we really want vs what we don’t want, and ultimately help us find “our” house. Unfortunately, due to the rapid pace of real estate turn-around here, cramming in viewings is messing with my schedule. Stuff keeps coming up last minute, or we can only see things on a weeknight, so I’ve been having trouble making it to CrossFit/running. It sucks, but since finding a house is really important to us, it is what it is.

I’m trying to break the “snooze” cycle. I’ve written about this before, but I have a huge problem with hitting the snooze button multiple times each morning, or resetting my alarm for a later time after it goes off. This leads to feeling drowsy all morning, and from everything I’ve read, is generally bad for one’s sleep cycle. To combat this, I’ve started leaving my phone on the desk across the room, so I HAVE to get up to turn it off. Not only that, but I turn the lights on immediately, which forces me to open my eyes and wake up. I started this on Wednesday morning, and so far, the results have been great. I wake up a lot faster in the mornings, and generally feel more energized. Fingers crossed the trend continues!

Work is gonna be CRAZY next week. Not only is it our quarterly reporting time, which is always my busiest two weeks each quarter, but my colleague is out and I’m covering all her work in addition to my own. Eek! I’ve written before about how this can be very challenging. She’s been with the company for 20 years and knows everything backwards and forwards, whereas I’ve only been with the company 3 years and only cover for her a couple of times a year. Inevitably, some weird and wonky thing comes up that has me scrambling. Fingers crossed that this week is relatively smooth.

Happy Friday!

Gearing Up For Show Week #2

Hey friends! I have gotten lots of sleep, exercise, and Ben time since last Wednesday’s post, and I’m feeling much more like myself.

The first week of shows was a bit rocky, but by the fourth show on Saturday it felt like we’d found our stride. I was completely exhausted after 7 straight days of rehearsals and shows, but I had all day Sunday off, plus Monday and Tuesday evenings.

On Sunday, I got out for a 10k long run (which I live blogged in my IG stories, which seemed to be a hit), and then Ben and I spent the afternoon hiking a steep trail on Mt. Mansfield. We got creemees on the way home, and had a nice supper with his folks before lights out at 9:30 pm.

Monday night was another restful night, with a roast chicken dinner and Rogue One on Netflix before another early bedtime.

Last night I hit up my first CrossFit class in almost two weeks, and then Ben and I did one more date night before he takes off on the second-to-last trip of the summer. We went to our member’s club, St. John’s Club, for an al fresco dinner on the patio, and then watched Sherlock together in our PJs. It was easy, cheap, and a perfect way to spend our last night together before he heads off for another week and a half.

Tonight kicks off the second weekend of shows for Dogfight, and after taking several days of vocal rest, I’m feeling ready to get back on stage. Even though I didn’t expect it to, this show has felt every bit as vocally demanding as Chess, even though the style of singing is a lot less difficult. Maybe it’s because I have more lines? Who knows. Regardless, I’m ready to kick some ass tonight.

Isn’t it amazing what some extra sleep and down time can do?

I actually managed to cook dinner for the family this week. I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t really been contributing to household chores as much as I’d like, and I’ve been getting down on myself over it. I finally sucked it up and made taco fixings on Tuesday night, and it made me feel so much better. Everyone has been incredibly gracious about my crazy schedule, but it’s never nice to feel like I’m just a burden on everyone.

9 to 5 opens two weeks from last night. Holy crap. I can’t believe it’s almost here already! The show is in great shape right now, and I know it’s going to be awesome. The only thing making me nervous is that I haven’t had a single costume fitting yet. I have no idea what I’m wearing, and I just hope I don’t look awful. I swear, if they put shoulder pads on me (the show is set in 1979), I may have a meltdown. I try not to be a diva about costumes, but it can be demoralizing to stand onstage in front of 1,200 people a night and feel like you look like a train wreck.

I’m going to be learning guitar. For a couple of scenes in Dogfight the musical, my character plays guitar and sings. So that’s crazy and cool. I took guitar lessons for a few years in middle school, and every once in a while I pick up a friend’s guitar and play around, but I’m going to have to actually put a bit of effort in over the next couple of months. Thank god for free lessons on YouTube, amirite?

I have slept better this week than I have in I don’t know how long. For years, I’ve had a weird sort of pseudo-insomnia where I a) have difficulty actually falling asleep, b) wake up multiple times a night, for no particular reason, and c) wake up about an hour before my alarm is set to go off and just lie there, wishing I were asleep. It’s annoying as hell, not to mention completely disruptive as far as getting good quality sleep. But this week? I’ve been falling asleep relatively quickly, I think I’ve woken up a handful of times, but for much shorter periods than usual, and I’m sleeping through until my alarm. I’m waking up, if not refreshed, at least not exhausted. I’m not sure what’s changed, but god I hope it keeps up!

Do you ever have trouble sleeping?

(Long) Weekend Update – Sleep, Eats, and Skipping CrossFit

Happy Tuesday, all! One week from yesterday I will be landing in the Bahamas, so I’m pretty much focused on that as I start this short week. Let’s look back at the long weekend, shall we?

Friday was the usual work–>CrossFit–>rehearsal deal. I booked it home and pretty much went straight to bed, because I wasn’t feeling 100% well. Boring.

I slept in LATE, almost until 11, which is quite unusual for me, but I was just trying to kick this cold. Ben took off to go snowboarding relatively early, and I just hung out for a while, waking up and deciding what to do with my day. I opted for equal parts relaxation and productivity, doing some cleaning and tidying around the house, reading, video gaming, and lots of other randomness.

In the evening, we met up with a group of friends at Stone Corral, a brewpub a couple of towns over. It was packed, and we had to wait a while to snipe a table, but it ended up being worth it. I had some delicious fish tacos and two tasty beers, and there was live music too, which was nice.

We finished up the evening with a nightcap and dessert at our friends’ place, and then headed home for some more sleep, as I was still feeling under the weather.

I was up and at ’em by 8:30 Sunday morning, even though I didn’t have rehearsal until 1pm. Knowing that I had all day Monday to do things like meal prep left me to enjoy a leisurely morning at home. My father in law made breakfast, and I just lounged about, reading and slowly getting myself ready to go into town.

Rehearsal was a relatively short deal, working on some of the larger dance numbers at a local dance studio. It’s always nice to have mirrors to help you see spacing and make sure you’re doing the moves correctly.

Ben’s Aunt Maureen was up for the night to visit Grammy, so we had a nice dinner of lasagna, garlic bread, and salad, and spent the evening chatting. We still went to bed relatively early, though, since Ben still had to work Monday.

I was up pretty early again, feeling much better rested than I have in a while, though my sinuses were still full of junk. I spent most of the morning reading, then spent a good chunk of the afternoon doing meal prep. I made my usual batch of rice and beans, but this time I also sauteed some boneless, skinless chicken thighs to add a bit more protein into the mix.

After that, I made the decision that I was NOT going to go to CrossFit. *GASP* I know. I really do love CF, but I just needed to relax at home a bit longer before going in for rehearsal. I was able to spend another hour and change at home, read my book, eat dinner, and THEN go to rehearsal, which was a long and somewhat arduous affair. Lots of hurry up and wait. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, but it was frustrating nonetheless. Once I got home, I immediately got ready for bed and went lights out.

I would say that today I’m feeling about 90% well. Honestly, the only thing that’s bothering me is my sinuses. They are just unpredictable and full of stuff. I’ve been religiously using my neti pot and my desktop humidifier, so I’m confident that I’ll be totally well before we fly out on Monday. Eeeeee!! I can’t wait.

Did you have a holiday on Monday? What did you do with it?

Friday Free-For-All – 05/15/15

FFFA (1)

Today will be a 2 post day. Woah, crazy talk, right? But I raced last night, and I need to do a recap, and I don’t want to wait all weekend, and then there’s Manic Monday… so you wouldn’t get the recap until Tuesday, and that’s just too long. So prepare for a second dose of Rae on your Friday 😉

We’re off to New York state tonight. As I mentioned on Monday, Ben’s cousin Lindsey is graduating from college today, so there will be a party in her honor tomorrow. We haven’t visited this side of the family in a while, so it will be nice to see everyone. We are also camping in their yard, so fingers crossed for no rain and no ticks!

I’ve gone to bed no later than 10:30 pm every night this week. I’m trying to make sleep more of a priority, for both my physical and mental health, and I have to say, it’s made a marked improvement on my demeanor. I’m not saying I hop out of bed all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed every morning, but I’m definitely less cranky and lethargic throughout the day. Ben and I have both re-committed to early bed times during the week, and I’m excited to see what this continues to do for me.

This has been a stressful week, and next week will be too. One of my co-workers is out on a cruise (lucky duck!) and I’m the backup for all of her work. Usually it’s not a big deal, but there’s just a lot of stuff she does that I don’t do often enough to feel comfortable with it, and there is even more stuff that she does that I have absolutely no idea how to do. So every day is kind of a crapshoot and I never know what to expect. And this is in addition to my new role that I started on May 1st. I will be very, very glad when she’s back in the office on May 26th.

What’s your normal bed time?
