Monday 08/01/16: Yoga or SpinRest
I intended to get up and either run or do yoga before work, depending on the weather. Unfortunately, my mind was racing a million miles a minute all night and I hardly got any sleep, so I just stayed in bed as late as I possibly could. Still though, I worked at Athleta in the evening, so I didn’t just go home and sit on my butt all night.

Tuesday 08/02/16: 4 Miles + Arms | 4.5 Miles + Arms
I did my run before work, woohoo! It was mid-60’s and not too humid, which was perfect. I’m trying to add a bit more distance to my runs because the 100 on 100 relay is coming right up, and none of my three legs is shorter than five miles, eek! I also did about 15 minutes of arm strength stuff in the evening.

Wednesday 08/03/16: Yoga or Spin | Spin
My first class in I don’t know how long. Months, for sure. It didn’t feel as awful as I was expecting, and I actually realized how much I’d missed it. I’m not sure I’ll be able to afford to buy another pass after I use my last class, but we’ll see.

Thursday 08/04/16: 3 Mile Tempo | All the swimming!
My family spent the day out on Lake Morey, and over the course of the day I probably spent at least an hour in the water, treading water and swimming around constantly. I was exhausted by the end of the day!

Friday 08/05/16: Rest | 1 Mile Warm Up + 3 Tempo Miles
I can’t lie, it was really tough to pull myself out of bed before work for this run, but I’m glad I got it done. My splits were 11:07, 9:35, 9:40, 9:22, which is pretty consistent, and right in the pace range I was shooting for, so I was happy. And tired!

Saturday 08/06/16: 3 Miles | Rest
Saturday was a full day–voice lesson in the morning, a toddler birthday party and buying new running shoes in the afternoon, and a waterfront walk and drinks and music with my friend Megan in the evening.

Sunday 08/07/16: 7 Miles | 8 Miles Total Over 2 Runs
I broke my long run up into two chunks to do a sort of practice run for the 100 on 100 relay this weekend. My morning run was about 18 seconds per mile faster than my afternoon run, but both paces were right in line with the estimated pace I gave to the race officials, so I feel pretty good about that.

Weekly Mileage: 16.5
Total 2016 Mileage: 478.7

This week will be all about resting and hydrating to prepare for the relay. I will still do a few shorter runs, but I won’t be going to spin class. I have a feeling Saturday’s race is going to take a lot out of me, so I’d rather be well-rested than push it this week and not be able to finish.

Vermont City Marathon Training Week 2: What Was Planned vs. What Happened

I ran outside, on the bikepath, in the snow, because DAY OFF. It was so nice to get to run out in the sunshine for once.

Tuesday 01/19/16: 45 Min Run Easy36 Min Easy
I took this run to the treadmill, because the temps were below freezing and there was a fresh coat of slippery wet snow on the ground. Unfortunately, my stomach was not at all thrilled with the idea of running at 8 pm, and I had to call it quits after 36 minutes.

Wednesday 01/20/16: Spin ClassSpin Class
The theme was Wayback Wednesday, and it was all 80’s music, and it was glorious! I ate a piece of bread and butter before class when I usually don’t eat beforehand, and I felt extra strong, so I think a small snack before workouts is the way to go.

Thursday 01/21/16: HillsRest
I woke up with swollen glands in my throat, and by the end of the day, had a terrible sore throat and low-grade fever, so I took a rest day in the hopes of nipping it in the bud.

Friday 01/22/16: Active Rest | Rest
I called out of work for the first time in about two years and slept until 2 pm. When I woke up for real, I was feeling somewhat better, but lightheaded and groggy because I hadn’t eaten or drank anything all day. I still went to rehearsal, which thankfully was very short and didn’t require any dancing.

Saturday 01/23/16: 6 Miles Easy6 Miles Easy
My sinuses were full of gunk, but my throat felt better, so I just decided to go for it. I took it to the treadmill in case I needed to bail out early, but I made it with minimal discomfort. I spent the rest of the day in compression pants on the couch, alternating between watching movies and playing video games.

Sunday 01/24/16: Yoga | 2 Hours Dance
I was still feeling yucky so I bailed on yoga yet again to get more sleep. I knew that rehearsal had a LOT of dancing in store, and I just wanted to save my energy for that. Thankfully we spent some time stretching after warm ups, so I felt like I didn’t completely miss out on mobility stuff for the day.

I’m feeling ok today. My sinuses are still really full and that has made sleeping well difficult, but during the day I feel mostly fine, other than needing to blow my nose every 10 minutes. I plan to at least try to keep up with my workouts this week, especially because today and tomorrow are relatively short, easy runs.

Monday 12/28/15: Short run15 Min Core
It was bloody cold and I was feeling sluggish and slightly holiday hangover-ish, so I just went home to lounge. I did, however, get in a decent core workout, so I feel pretty good about this day nonetheless.

Tuesday 12/29/15: Rest/dinner with friendsRest
My friend Krissy was in town from San Francisco, so we had a little get together at her mom’s house. It was great to see her!

Wednesday 12/30/15: SpinSpin
I SO did not want to get up this morning, but as always, I’m glad I did.

Thursday 12/31/15: Rest/Travel to NJ | Rest/Travel
I left work at  noon and drove the 6.5 hours to central Jersey to see my bestie Mandy and her husband. New Year festivities were in full swing, and we rang in the new year with lots of laughs, food, and drink.

Friday 01/01/16: Short runFast 5k
In spite of being tired and mildly hungover, I got out there for a fast-for-me 5k, and then spent the rest of the day eating and drinking. Ooof.

Saturday 01/02/16: 5-6 milesRest
Lack of sleep and excess eating got the better of me, and I just didn’t feel like running. It was another lazy day of games, TV, and adult coloring.

Sunday 01/03/16: Rest/Travel HomeRest/Travel
I left at noon and made it home by 7, at which point I had to unpack, clean, make lunches, and mentally gird my loins for the busy week I knew work would have for me when I got back.

I know it sounds sad and lame, but I’m actually kind of glad the holidays are over. I have zero self-control when it comes to social eating, and I know I’ve gained a few pounds and I generally feel gross. I refer to this as the post-holiday hangover, and I’m more than ready to get back on track.

Unfortunately, this week will still be challenging as far as finding time and motivation to run. Work is VERY busy this week, and we are still a single car family; with Ben coaching the Nordic ski team, he’s often not home until it would be too late for me to go to the gym. Theoretically the truck will be fixed after this coming weekend, and things will be less challenging. And of course, both marathon training AND Mary Poppins rehearsals start next week, so it’s time to get serious. I’m actually REALLY looking forward to the structure and accountability that marathon training with Coach Suz will bring.

Here is my tentative plan:

  • Monday: Rest
  • Tuesday: Short run
  • Wednesday: Spin
  • Thursday: Short run
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: 5-6 miles
  • Sunday: Yoga

Monday 04/20/15:  3 mile runch. The rain cleared up long enough for me to squeak in 3 miles–rain drops started falling right as I ran up to my building!  I also did Body Pump after work. It was my first class in a while, and it felt AWESOME. My work/gym buddy Freda was there, as well as another of our theatre friends, Kim, and a girl we’ve become friendly with through classes at the gym, so it was a fun atmosphere.

Tuesday 04/21/15:  Rest Day. It was rainy and windy, and I was tired and sore from the double workout on Monday, so I just did some light stretching and rolling after dinner.

Wednesday 04/22/15: REVtheme ride: Bollywood. This was my second spin class at REV, and I loved it just as much as the first time. My friend Chris taught the class, and a bunch of our other theatre friends were there. It was awesome! The Bollywood music was super fun, and I worked HARD the whole hour. This was an amazing way to start my Wednesday. I also did more rolling in the evening because my legs were still really sore from Pump plus spin.

Thursday 04/23/15:  Rest Day. Another chilly, cloudy day (I woke up to snow. On April 23. WTF), so I just didn’t feel like running or walking. 

Friday 04/24/15:  Rest Day. I had intended to runch, but my Friday lunch buddy Emily called me up at the last minute to meet. We haven’t had lunch in weeks, so it was nice to see her. (Also, woke up to more snow–almost 3 inches. Seriously?!?)

Saturday 04/25/15:  Rest Day. We had some friends over on Friday night and I had one drink too many, so Saturday morning I just wasn’t up to a run. But at the Legally Blonde cast party in the evening, I did lots of dancing, so it wasn’t a completely sedentary day.

Sunday 04/26/15:  Rest Day. I really did intend to run, but it was significantly colder than it’s been lately, and I didn’t pack any cold weather running clothes. I know it’s a lame excuse, but whatever. 

We’re still house-sitting until tomorrow, but after that, things should be “normal” again. Honestly I don’t even know what that means anymore after the craziness of the last few months. But I’m hoping this means I’ll be able to get back to the workout schedule I laid out in my Back on Track post. Here’s what I want to do this week:

  • Monday:  Body Pump
  • Tuesday: 3 mile runch
  • Wednesday:  Walk or short runch and Body Pump
  • Thursday: 3 mile runch and CXWORX
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: GMAA Pump it Up 5 Miler
  • Sunday: Rest

Legally Blonde Takes Over REV

This post may not be super beneficial for those of you who don’t live in the greater Burlington, Vermont area, but I need to write about my experience at REV anyway.  Feel free to skip this one, especially if you’ve done spinning before.

I had never done a spin class, ever, and I generally don’t like the stationary bike.  I find it SUPER boring, and I’d pretty much rather be doing anything else.  But I figured, with the combination of good music, variations in movement, and somebody telling me what to do when, it would probably work out well.

On Saturday, a good chunk of the Legally Blonde cast was treated to a free class at REV Indoor, because Sarah, the owner, plays our Brooke Wyndham.  The building is very cool–high ceilings, exposed brick, and nice wood floors.  There’s only a single spin studio, but it’s large, with lots of windows and natural light.  We were each properly fitted to our bikes by an instructor, and I was very happy that special clip-in shoes are not necessary; the pedals have cages, so you can wear your own sneakers.

I have nothing to compare this class to, but HOLY CRAP.  I can honestly say that I’ve never worked so hard in a group fitness class in my entire life.  The class was co-taught by Sarah and two other instructors, each of whom are also in the Legally Blonde cast.  They each had very different styles, but I liked them all equally, and found myself really wanting to work hard and do well, so I guess they were pretty motivational.  It was also ridiculously fun because everyone knew everyone, so we could shout encouragement or curses and not feel weird.

The thing I liked most about the class is that you can really work as hard as you want, or take it easy when you need to.  They’ll give you suggestions for increasing or decreasing your resistance at various points, but ultimately, the level of resistance is totally up to you, which is especially great for a noob like me.  There were actually a few minutes towards the end where I was working so hard I started to feel nauseated, so I backed way off on the resistance, and was able to keep going and finish the class sans pukeage.

So yeah, long story short, I loved it.  This was hands down the best workout I’ve had in a long time.  Unfortunately, the pricing isn’t so great for me.  A drop-in class is $16, or you can get various class punch cards that offer a small discount.  I’m torn, because I’d like to catch at least one class a week, but I’m not sure it’s in my budget right now.  My gym does offer spin classes, but I like the idea of taking classes with instructors I know at REV.  We’ll see how things shake out.  I guess I should try a class at the gym before making a decision.  I’m sure the fact that the class was full of my friends probably made it better, and if I went to a regular class at REV, it might not be the same experience.

Manic Monday – 01/26/15

This was a killer week.  Between running, fitness classes, and intense jump roping/dancing rehearsals, I logged 6 workouts this week.

Monday 01/19/15:  3 easy treadmill miles; 3ish hours of jumping rope at rehearsal.  This was a TERRIBLE idea.  Cue death by exhaustion.

Tuesday 01/20/15:  Well-earned REST DAY!  Did some stretching and rolling to relax my sore muscles.

Wednesday 01/21/15:  Unscheduled rest day.  I was too tired and sore from Monday to attempt anything other than some very ginger walking around the office.  Stairs were not my friends.

Thursday 01/22/15:  10 minutes of incline walking on the treadmill to warm up; Les Mills CXWORX class (stay tuned for a post about this!).  Sneak peek:  OUCH!

Friday 01/23/15:  Still too tired and sore to run.  2ish hours of jumping rope at rehearsal. Cue death by exhaustion Part 2.

Saturday 01/24/15:  45 minute spin class (stay tuned for a post about this!).  Sneak peek:  I’ve never worked so hard in my life.

Sunday 01/25/15:  2ish hours of dancing at rehearsal.  Cue death by exhaustion Part 3.

I’m mostly joking about the death by exhaustion thing, but not totally.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a week with this many workouts.  While it was good to try new things and I feel really accomplished, I know this is not a sustainable pace.  First of all, I was too tired and sore to run at all after Monday’s back-to-back.  My body needs more recovery time.  Secondly, I mentally need more couch+Netflix time.

The focus for this week will be dialing it back a bit and finding balance between getting adequate rest and doing ALLTHEWORKOUTS!  My shins are VERY tender after all of the high impact jumping rope last week, so I plan to take it easy and not even attempt a run until at least Wednesday.

Friday Free-For-All – 01/23/15


I get to take my first spin class this weekend, for free!  One of the women in the Legally Blonde cast owns Rev Indoor Cycling studio, and she is hosting a free 45 minutes class for anyone in the show from 11:45-12:15 tomorrow.  I’ve never taken a spin class before, and I’m really excited.  I talked a bit in Tuesday’s post about trying to incorporate more cross-training and classes into my comprehensive fitness/wellness plan, so I’ll be interested to see how spin goes.  I’ve heard it’s pretty intense.  I doubt I’ll end up getting a membership to Rev though, because my gym offers spin classes that are included in my monthly membership fee, and I’m too cheap to pay for yet another membership.  And speaking of Legally Blonde…

Every muscle in my body hurts.  We started choreography for the “Whipped Into Shape” number.  For those of you who don’t know, it’s ALL jump rope.  And not just regular up and down, but swinging, whipping, crossing, double-undering and more.  I made the brilliant decision to run three miles prior to rehearsal on Monday night, where I then jumped rope for almost 3 straight hours.  On a concrete floor.  Ouch.  And I get to do it again tonight.  The good news is, I expect to be a hardbody by the time this show is over, especially if I keep up with running and group fitness classes outside of rehearsals.  You can get a peek at sort of what we’re doing in the video below.

I had another ocular migraine yesterday.  The timing is kind of eerie, because I had my first one EXACTLY two weeks prior.  I’m going to start tracking them so if they increase in frequency or become sort of regular I can go to my doctor and try to figure out what’s causing them and how to prevent them.

Ben is done student teaching, yaaaay!  Now all he has to do is complete his portfolio and he’ll have his teaching license by the end of March.  This is exciting on so many levels, not the least of which is that he will soon be able to start applying for jobs, and once he gets a job, we can start thinking about moving out on our own again.  It’s not that I don’t love my in-laws or enjoy living with them, but I miss my Kitchen-Aid mixer, dammit!
