Quick Monday Check-In

Hi, friends!

I didn’t really mean to disappear for two weeks, but c’est la vie. I was feeling exhausted and rundown, Vera wasn’t sleeping well, and then Ben’s spring break was last week, so I decided to spend my time doing other things.

Break was lovely. We spent lots of time together as a family, and got a ton of projects done around the house. We also have had fairly decent success with dropping overnight feeding and getting Vera to sleep through the night. And by success, I mean she only cries for forty minutes a night versus three straight hours. Fun times.

Now Ben is back to work and I’m sitting here with a cup of coffee, trying to get back into the swing of SAHM life. My race is in a little less than two weeks and I’m looking forward to that. I’ve been keeping up with running, though not really with strength or yoga, but I’m ok with that.

And on a completely random note, I unfriended someone on Facebook last night for posting GoT spoilers. Yeah, really. He posted literally moments after the episode ended, with a charming little note to the effect that if one hadn’t yet seen the new episode, one wasn’t really a true fan and therefore too bad.

Granted, I had already seen it, so he didn’t spoil anything for me. But that casual “fuck you” attitude for other people’s feelings really pissed me off. Ever heard of time zones, buddy? Ever heard of responsibilities like jobs, travel, and children that might prevent someone from watching immediately?

I’m the first to say that expecting everyone everywhere to avoid posting spoilers for all time is unrealistic, and if you really don’t want to see spoilers you probably should avoid social media. HOWEVER, I think a respectful 24 hours is due. And maybe a little sympathy for your fellow fans.

Has anyone ever spoiled a show/movie for you? How did you handle it? Am I overreacting?

Friday Free-For-All – 04/19/19

Friday Free-For-All

Woohoo, spring break! Ben’s break begins today, and we couldn’t be happier about it. The last few weeks have been a bit of a slog for both of us, and we’re ready to have some family time. Also, ALL OF THE PROJECTS. We need to get our garden prep going and take care of some stuff around the house that we’ve been neglecting.

Sleep training, round two. We’re also planning to use this break as an opportunity to try to give up overnight feeds with Vera. At her age, it’s not at all necessary, but it’s become a habit that is messing with our sleep and driving me a bit crazy. I haven’t had a night of uninterrupted sleep for almost 10 months and it’s wearing on me. I’m not at all looking forward to the process, but I’m looking forward to the results.

My husband is a cookie gobbler. I bake a lot, because homemade treats are cheaper and generally better tasting than store bought. Recently, I had to start dividing up cookies into “mine” and “yours” batches, because otherwise Ben ended up eating twice as many cookie as I did, and I was not happy about it. Seriously. That man can eat four enormous cookies in one go, whereas I like to make mine last a bit longer. So now we have separate containers.

My race is three weeks away. I’m getting very excited to race again. Unfortunately, fundraising is going a bit slower this year than in years past. A large portion of donations used to come from my work colleagues, and now that I’m not working anymore, well, those donations aren’t happening. I still have time, and I still have some family who are planning to contribute, but I don’t think I’m going to hit $1000 this year. If by chance you feel moved to contribute, the link to my fundraising page is here.

Do you have a spouse who eats a disproportionate amount of treats?

Friday Free-For-All

Spring Break, baby! As of 4:30 pm today, Ben and I are officially on Spring Break. We’ll be hanging at home for the first half of the week, hopefully taking care of a few projects and just relaxing. Then Wednesday through Sunday, we’ll be in Jersey visiting my bestie and her husband, who are also expecting a baby. We figured we’d better get a visit in while we can, because we’re all about to get super busy, and who knows the next time we’ll have the opportunity to see each other?

Spring weather is finally here! The forecast for the next few days looks so wonderful and springy, I could just die of happiness. Sunshine and temps in the 50’s and 60’s. FINALLY. After the miserable, dreary, snowy, icy, rainy junk we’ve had for the last few weeks, we are overdue for spring.

Here comes the sunnnn!

I paid off my second-to-last student loan this week. It was “only” about $1,500, but they recently jacked up the interest rate to over 6 percent, so I decided it was time to just eliminate it completely. I fully recognize that $1,500 isn’t an insignificant amount, but compared to my remaining student loan, it’s small. Regardless, it’s extremely satisfying to be one step closer to being debt-free. Obviously, it’s gonna take a while to actually get there with the mortgage we just took out, but you’ve gotta celebrate each step!

A wind storm this week knocked down a tree in our yard. Normally, this might be problematic. Fortunately, however, we had already identified this as a sick tree that we needed to cut down anyway. Problem solved! Now we can just chop it up for summertime bonfires. Thanks, Mother Nature!

Is it spring break for you and yours?

My acne has come back with a vengeance since I went off hormonal birth control. The only reason I went on birth control at age 18 was because I had terrible acne that didn’t respond to ANY  over the counter OR prescription meds, and I was desperate. The pill helped some, and I eventually did Accutane, which REALLY helped (and was also AWFUL for me), but I’ve never had what I would consider good skin. The last few years, though, I finally sort of figured out what worked for me and only had occasional breakouts. But now that I’m off the pill, all hell has broken loose again and I don’t know what to do with myself. My self-confidence is in the absolute pits right now. It’s also hard because I’m trying to switch to using more natural, cruelty-free products, and I’ve found those to be much more expensive than run-of-the-mill drugstore products. Ugh.

Ben is currently on spring break and I am positively green with envy. It has been SO HARD this week getting up and going to work while he’s still snoozing away. I know I should just get over it, because this is going to be my life from now on and summer is coming, but it stinks.

I have been something of a social butterfly this week. On Tuesday, I hung out with my friend Stacy who is moving to Albany after this week. On Wednesday, Ben and I went to a dinner party at our friend Erik’s house. Last night, we went out with some of Ben’s coworkers. Tonight, we’re going to a “Fundue” party. And tomorrow, Ben’s aunt Karen is coming up from New York and we’re having family dinner together. While I LOVE seeing our friends and doing fun things, all of this socialization really takes it out of me. I’m looking forward to a quiet, lazy day on Sunday to recuperate.

I bought some Vega Protein and Greens powder and a shaker bottle. Because I live 45 minutes away from my CF box, it makes getting a decent snack in me within the “optimal protein window” pretty difficult. And I’m usually RAVENOUS by the time I make it home, meaning I end up eating too much at dinner. I’m hoping that by mixing up a protein shake to drink on the way home after class, I can curb my overeating and maybe start to lose some of this extra weight I’ve picked up. A girl can dream, right?

The Altra One’s have arrived! I ordered them in 9.5 and 10 because I wasn’t sure which size I needed. I ended up keeping the 10s because I felt good about the extra room. So far, I’ve run a 5k in them. It’s still way to early to tell if I’m happy with them, but the good news is, there was nothing immediately bad about them, as was the case with the Hokas. Fingers crossed!

Have you ever struggled with acne? What products work(ed) for you?

FFFA (1)

Spring Break, baby! As of 4:30 this afternoon, Ben and I will officially be on vacation. We will be taking off on an East Coast Friends and Family road trip. We’ve planned stops in New Jersey, DC, and North Carolina, and we couldn’t be more excited. The timing works out perfectly that we’ll actually be arriving in NJ for a friend’s birthday, and the longest stretch of driving we’ll have to do in any given day is 6 hours. I’ll try to schedule some posts to go up while I’m gone, but I’ll mostly be away from computers.

I’m teaming up with Athleta and Vermont City Marathon to host a few training runs in the weeks leading up to VCM. As you already know, I’m running and promoting VCM on behalf of BibRave, but I was contacted by Athleta because they are working with the “New to 26.2” first-time marathon training program that VCM is offering. Each Saturday a group will be meeting at Athleta for a 4-6 mile training run, and I get to be one of the “leaders.” I’m excited because a) I LOVE Athleta, b) I’ve really been missing group runs these last few months, and c) it’s a perfect cross-promotion opportunity. I’d like to say right out that if it weren’t for the fact that my friend Chris is the general manager of my local Athleta, this probably wouldn’t be happening, but I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth!

I FINALLY got my Saucony Mirage 5s this weekend. I have run in them a couple of times so far, and while they are definitely a bit different than the 4s, I think they’re going to work out just fine. Hallelujah! Now to stock up on them before they completely disappear so that I don’t have to deal with this shoe drama again for a loooong time…

Remember that I’m raising money for the Vermont Respite House by running the Jiggety Jog 5k. I’m trying to raise $1000 by the event on May 7. Wanna help me get there? Click this link to make a secure online donation: http://bit.ly/1MuGMhM

Anyone else on spring break this week? Any fun plans?

Friday Free-For-All – 04/24/15

Friday Spring Break week makes for some great commutes. All of our local schools are on break this week, which means that a significant number of drivers who would usually be on the road in the morning are not. This has made my commute SO MUCH LESS STRESSFUL. And even a minute or two shorter, which is nice.

Spring Break also makes for a quiet office. Two thirds of my team were out on vacation this week. It’s been like a ghost town around here. I’m ok with it though, because it gave me a chance to really get caught up on stuff without distractions.

I may be joining a running club! I run a lot of races with RaceVermont, because they’re local, and they have frequent, affordable races. I got an email from the race director that they will be starting a one year running club in May. The cost to join is only $10, and they’re partnering with Fleet Feet. I emailed the guy today to get some more details. I’m hoping that the days of the week and locations will work for me, because I’ve desperately been wanting to try group running, and it seems like this could be perfect. Fingers crossed!

I’m at 59% of my fundraising goal for the VRH Jiggety Jog 5k.  It feels amazing to be so far along already, but there’s still a ways to go. The race is on May 9 (my birthday!), and is now only a few weeks away. If you feel moved to make a donation to this wonderful organization, please click here.

Are your local schools on break? How did it affect you?

Have you ever been part of a running club? Did you like it?
