Friday Free-For-All

My coworkers threw me a Star Wars-themed baby shower! Once again, I’m simply blown away by their thoughtfulness, generosity, and creativity. Seriously. We received so many lovely gifts, and several Amazon giftcards that are sure to come in handy down the line as we figure out exactly what we need to keep our little one happy. While I’m obviously very excited to start my new role as stay at home mom, I will desperately miss my colleagues.

We ordered a new pet fountain. You may remember several months ago, our kitty Rocket had a big health scare and spent four days in the kitty hospital. One of the number one recommendations was to get a pet fountain to encourage him to drink more water. At the time, one of my coworkers offered to let us borrow hers since her cat had recently passed away. Now that I’m about to leave work, though, my coworker has asked that we return the fountain. I went on Amazon and was thoroughly shocked by a) how many different options there are, and b) how EXPENSIVE they are. The version we had borrowed from my coworker retails for $85! Obviously, I wasn’t spending that. I got a slightly smaller ceramic version by the same company (for about half the price!), and I’m optimistic that it will suit our needs just fine. And the fact that it’s smaller will probably encourage me to clean it more often anyway.

I haven’t been to yoga in two weeks and I’m feeling it. I didn’t go last week because work was so crazy I had to stay late. Then this week, I had a vacation day on Tuesday and didn’t feel like driving into town just for class. But now I kind of regret not going, as my hip is complaining and my carpal tunnel has been really bad this week. My unlimited summer pass starts today, so I’m hoping to get to class more than once a week for the remainder of my pregnancy. Fingers crossed I actually get some time to myself after leaving work and before baby comes!

I got my hair cut last night. Unfortunately, she took quite a bit more off than I would have liked (we’re talking 3-4 inches total versus the 1-2 I was imagining), but thankfully it looks great, and does feel a lot healthier than it did before. It’s also funny that even though to me it looks DRASTICALLY different, not one single person at work has noticed so far.

We’re traveling this weekend. Ben’s great uncle Jipper passed away this winter, and his memorial service is tomorrow afternoon in Albany. We’re road-tripping down with my in-laws and splitting a hotel room, so the cost isn’t too crazy. And Albany is only about 2.5-3 hours from home just in case there is any early movement on the baby front. I’m a little bit nervous about traveling so close to my due date, but based on a conversation with my midwife, I really don’t think there’s anything to worry about at this point. This will likely be our last trip for the next little while, so I’m trying to focus on the positive of seeing extended family before the baby comes. We likely won’t make it to the family reunion because it’s scheduled for early July (aka right in the middle of potential baby time), so it will be good to get some family time in.

Are you hyper-sensitive about haircuts like me?

Friday Free-For-All

First things first: MY BEST FRIEND HAD HER BABY YESTERDAY! I am feeling ALL the feelings right now. Mostly a mix of intense excitement and jealousy, haha! I am so proud of my friend for bringing her baby into this world, but I am SO jealous that she already gets to meet and hold and love her little guy, while I’ve still got some time to wait before our baby girl makes her debut.

It has been a WEEK. Oof. Between my entire team being out of the office, training a new employee one day, and trying to make sure everything is wrapped up before I leave work on June 8, this has been an incredibly stressful week! The days went by super fast, but each one was emotionally fraught. Who thought it was a good idea to leave the 8-months-pregnant lady alone to do the work of a seven person team?? The good news is, after today I only have SEVEN total work days left, as I still have a few partial and full vacation days sprinkled in, plus the Memorial Day holiday. I am in the final countdown, and honestly quite happy about it.

We got a new (to us) TV! Our TV has been wonky for years, but we have been too cheap to buy a new one. Who cares if half of every screen is pixelated neon green, it still works, right? Well, after Grammie went into the nursing home a few months ago, Ben’s folks thought they wanted to keep her TV. As time went on, however, they realized they weren’t actually using it at all, and so on Tuesday night they dropped it off at our house. It’s about the same size as our old TV, but it has Roku built in, meaning we can sign into various subscription accounts (not that we have Netflix or Amazon Prime anymore), and IT’S NOT NEON GREEN! Having a fully functioning TV feels like a total luxury.

I saw “Solo: A Star Wars Story” last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Star Wars movie I didn’t like, but this one was extra enjoyable. The actors they got to play young Han and young Lando did an amazing job of inhabiting the characters and keeping the same feel and mannerisms without being carbon copies, and the plot was entertaining, with some good twists and turns. It was also really nice to get my pregnant butt out of the house after work and see my friends. I’ve been quite the homebody lately, and it was great to have a normal night out.

If your TV had been not fully functional for 3+ years, would you have sucked it up and replaced it, or are you a frugal weirdo like me and Ben?

I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens last night. I won’t give any spoilers, but I will say that I was one happy nerd. I’m dying because all I want to do today is talk about it and I don’t have anyone to talk about it with. I can’t wait to watch it again.

ONE WEEK ‘TIL CHRISTMAS! I have Christmas Eve AND Christmas day off, and I can’t wait to sit in front of the fireplace at my parents’ house, rocking PJs and sipping spiked eggnog.

We are having some decidedly un-Christmas like weather and it’s bumming me out. This time last year we had a solid foot of snow on the ground. Today, it’s in the 50’s and raining. And the forecast for next week looks like more of the same. I can’t remember the last time we had a Green Christmas, and I kind of hate that it’s happening. I know that there are people in this country and all over the world who usually DON’T have snow for Christmas, but it’s just not normal for me.

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie yet? What did you think?? And remember, NO SPOILERS.

October is seriously kicking my ass. Work has been super busy. On top of normal work stuff, I’m on the campaign committee for our United Way fundraising campaign, which is next week. I don’t have a Halloween costume yet, we haven’t been grocery shopping in two weeks, and I leave for Wine and Dine in 14 days. I’m losing my ever-loving mind.

I can’t fricken wait until the new Star Wars movie comes out. I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I first saw the originals back in the late 90’s. After the shitty prequels, I was really reluctant to feel any sort of excitement at all about Episode VII. But then I watched the new trailer that came out this week, and I got chills and almost cried. Yes, I’m that big of a nerd. I’m planning to get tickets for opening night.

I’m hitting up a Target this weekend. This is a big deal for me, as there are NO Targets at all in the state of Vermont. I think I’m going to pick up one of these bad boys, which will solve my Halloween costume dilemma, and also help feed my Star Wars frenzy:

Are you a Star Wars fan? Are you as excited as I am for Episode VII?

Friday Free-For-All – 02/20/15

Friday

It’s official–I’m going to Disney World! Those of you who follow me on Instagram or Twitter already saw this, but I was one of the lucky people able to get into the runDisney Wine & Dine half marathon before it sold out. I’m SO FREAKIN’ EXCITED! This will be my first runDisney race, my first destination race/racecation, and I will finally get to meet the ladies of Team Can-Am (minus Lisa, sadface). I feel very fortunate that my bonus this year will pay for the trip in its entirety, so I don’t have to stress about money and can just enjoy myself. I can’t wait!

I still haven’t decided whether or not I’m racing tomorrow. In case you missed yesterday’s post, I’ve got a chest cold. Lots of nasty stuff is stuck in my lungs, my throat hurts, and my sinuses are all plugged up. None of these conditions are great for running a race. I’m feeling a bit better today, but still not sure I’m well enough to run 6.2 miles in the snow/rain. Rehearsal tonight will probably be a good indicator, since we’re doing a ton of jump rope and dance stuff. If I can’t breathe inside in a nice, warm dance studio, it will probably be even worse in the damp and cold.

Star Wars marathon continues tomorrow. Back on Valentine’s Day, Ben and I started a Star Wars marathon with our friends David and Alex, but we only got through two movies. So after the race (if it happens), I’ll snag a hot shower and change of clothes, and then we’ll spend the remainder of the day eating, drinking, and Star Wars-ing. This will be a great consolation prize if I end up not being able to run.

Who else is running Wine and Dine? I’m so excited to possibly meet all of you!

Manic Monday – 02/09/15

It was a much more low-key week this week than the last several have been. Between my knee bothering me and being downright exhausted after a couple of intense weeks of workouts and rehearsals, a cutback week was just what I needed.

Monday 02/02/15: Rest day. My knee was really bothering me after rehearsal on Sunday, so I knew I wouldn’t be going to the gym. And mercifully, rehearsal was cancelled due to inclement weather, so I got to leave work early, put on sweatpants, and relax for an evening, which was SO NICE.

Tuesday 02/03/15: Rest day. Since starting an Ibuprofen regimen (500mg 3x per day), my knee was feeling better, but I didn’t want to push it. I spent a good 15-20 minutes massaging my legs with a handheld roller and it felt AMAZING.

Wednesday 02/04/15: I backed off on the Ibuprofen so I could see how the knee was feeling. Verdict–still felt weird, but not actually painful. In celebration (and to help continue the healing trend), I skipped my scheduled run and went to my FIRST YOGA CLASS IN OVER A YEAR! Yaaaaay! Then I had a fast and low-key rehearsal, too!

Thursday 02/05/15: 10 minutes of incline walking to warm up; CXWORX class.

Friday 02/06/15:  I intended to try running a mile, but stopped at .5 because my knee felt weird. Not painful, but weird. I did 30 minutes on the recumbent bike instead. Rehearsal was somewhat dancey, but not too bad.

Saturday 02/07/15: Rest day. Lots of cleaning around the house. We also went to a special viewing party of my friend Emily’s Food Network debut on “Outrageous Chocolate.” It was SO COOL seeing my friend on TV, and she was so excited. Congratulations, again Emily! I hope they give her her own show soon 😉

Sunday 02/08/15: Rest day, other than some dance stuff at rehearsal, probably no more than an hour altogether.

I have my first race of the year, the Cupid 5k, on Saturday. I haven’t been doing a whole lot of running lately, so this week will be all about testing out the knee and making sure I’m good to run. I’m hoping to get back to Body Pump this week, but not sure that my schedule will allow it. I’m also hoping to check out a new yoga studio that’s cheaper than the one I went to last week, and of course, take my beloved CXWORX class on Thursday. Here’s a tentative plan for the week:

  • Monday: Short run (2 miles?) with long warm up and cool down
  • Tuesday: Fluid Yoga?
  • Wednesday: Short run (2 miles?) with long warm up and cool down
  • Thursday: CXWORX
  • Friday: Packet pickup; Spin?; rehearsal
  • Saturday: Cupid 5k; Valentine’s Day crepe brunch; Star Wars marathon
  • Sunday: Rest
