Friday Free-For-All

Remember that commercial I shot a couple of weeks ago? It’s live! It’s been airing during the Olympics and I’ve had a bunch of friends texting me about it. It’s a SUPER quick segment (literally only 15 seconds long), but I had a lot of fun filming. If you’re interested, you can check it out by clicking here.

Ben and I did something unusual for Valentine’s Day. We bought each other a couch! We’ve never really been super into the forced celebration of Valentine’s Day, but we decided it would be fun to buy a real couch for our new house instead of spending money on junk we don’t need. We’ve been using an old, lumpy futon that we got free from his parents, and it was time to upgrade.  We ended up investing in a really nice Flexsteel sectional. They were having a 20% off sale and the frame comes with a lifetime warranty, so we feel really good about it. And there’s a CHAISE on one end! Helloooo, relaxation! Unfortunately, it may take up to 10 weeks to actually be delivered. Boo.

I went to prenatal yoga this week! Real talk: I haven’t been to CrossFit since December, and I haven’t run/walked/otherwise worked out since early January. Pregnancy is rough guys! But I’m starting to feel a bit gross, so I’m making a commitment to get my body moving more, and prenatal yoga is just the ticket! I’ve been experiencing a lot of round ligament pain, and things have been just a wee bit stressful lately, so it felt incredible to just relax and stretch out my body.

We celebrated my four year anniversary at work this week. Holy crap! I simply can’t believe it’s been that long! The customary anniversary gift is a nice bottle of wine, but since I’m preggo, I got a really fancy bottle of olive oil instead. This was super handy, as we didn’t have any cooking oil at the new house yet. Even though I’m really happy with my decision to stay home and raise our daughter after she’s born, I’m going to miss the heck out of my colleagues.

How long have you been at your job? Do they do anniversary celebrations?

We’ve been looking at houses. Yay! It’s still early times, but I figure, the more stuff we look at, the more it will help us zero in on what’s important to us, what we really want vs what we don’t want, and ultimately help us find “our” house. Unfortunately, due to the rapid pace of real estate turn-around here, cramming in viewings is messing with my schedule. Stuff keeps coming up last minute, or we can only see things on a weeknight, so I’ve been having trouble making it to CrossFit/running. It sucks, but since finding a house is really important to us, it is what it is.

I’m trying to break the “snooze” cycle. I’ve written about this before, but I have a huge problem with hitting the snooze button multiple times each morning, or resetting my alarm for a later time after it goes off. This leads to feeling drowsy all morning, and from everything I’ve read, is generally bad for one’s sleep cycle. To combat this, I’ve started leaving my phone on the desk across the room, so I HAVE to get up to turn it off. Not only that, but I turn the lights on immediately, which forces me to open my eyes and wake up. I started this on Wednesday morning, and so far, the results have been great. I wake up a lot faster in the mornings, and generally feel more energized. Fingers crossed the trend continues!

Work is gonna be CRAZY next week. Not only is it our quarterly reporting time, which is always my busiest two weeks each quarter, but my colleague is out and I’m covering all her work in addition to my own. Eek! I’ve written before about how this can be very challenging. She’s been with the company for 20 years and knows everything backwards and forwards, whereas I’ve only been with the company 3 years and only cover for her a couple of times a year. Inevitably, some weird and wonky thing comes up that has me scrambling. Fingers crossed that this week is relatively smooth.

Happy Friday!

My company’s annual United Way campaign kicks off next week. I’m on the planning committee, which means that this week is usually a ton of work and stress. I’m already dreading it. I know it’s all for a good cause, but this is my fourth year on the committee and I think I’m just burned out. I really hope that next year I can excuse myself and get some fresh blood in there.

We had our Client Appreciation event on Wednesday night. This is another annual event that I have to help plan, and that is usually very stressful. Thankfully, it went off without a hitch, everyone was happy with the venue and the food, and it’s done and over with for another year.

I’ve been cutting back on caffeine lately. My trick is to drink two cups of half caff instead of two cups of full caff. So far, it’s going well. I haven’t felt too tired or like I’m feeling any withdrawal symptoms. I’m not particularly sensitive to caffeine, but I love the taste of it, and the feeling of comfort it brings. I doubt I’ll ever completely give it up, but a bit less most days is a good idea.

Ben and I are looking at a house tonight! This will be our first time actually going to see a house, versus just looking at stuff online. It’s a bit of a fixer-upper, but depending on what kind of shape it’s in, we definitely have the know-how to fix it up ourselves. It’s a bit further afield than we’d like, and the lot is quite a bit smaller than we envisioned, but based on our future plans, the price is right to at least make it worth looking at as a “starter home.” I really hate the concept of the starter home, but it’s a thing for a reason. It’s a way to become homeowners in the short term, and maybe sell it to get our “dream house” later. We’ll see. I’m probably getting way ahead of myself here. It’s just exciting to finally be LOOKING at stuff.

Happy Friday!

I just had my three year anniversary at work. I honestly can’t believe it’s already been that long. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but I’m very lucky to have the job I do. Sure, it’s not a field or subject I’m passionate about, but the pay is great and the people are awesome. Also, I’m now fully vested in the 401(k) program, so, yay for retirement planning!

Long weekend ahead! We have Monday off for Presidents’ Day and I couldn’t be more stoked. Of course I will still have rehearsal and CrossFit and such, but it will be nice to have an extra weekend day for fun and productivity. And sleep. Sweet, sweet sleep.

I’m fighting a head cold and I hate it. Ben was sick all of last weekend and most of this week, and I can feel my body starting to succumb. I’ve got a dry, swollen throat, and some nasal congestion. I’m doing my absolute best not to give in, and fighting back with lots of tea, sinus irrigation (love my neti pot!), my desktop humidifier, and resting as much as possible. Which isn’t much because I’m stupid busy. But I’m trying. I simply don’t have time to be sick right now. My audition for Dogfight the musical is next weekend, and we leave for the Bahamas a week from Monday. No. Sickness. Here.

Do you have a long weekend too? Any fun plans?

This week has kicked my butt. First week back at work after the holidays. First week of the new quarter and the new year. First week of rehearsals for 9 to 5 the Musical. I’m POOPED. I’m just trying to wait for things to equalize and not freak out. This weekend will be mostly about catching up on sleep and getting serious about meal planning and prep so I can eat like a normal, healthy human being instead of a garbage disposal. And also not spend all my money on eating out.

I know I’m late to the party, but I’m officially obsessed with Hamilton. For over a year, all my musical theatre friends have been all “Hamilton is so great, Hamilton is so amazing, blah blah.” I tried to listen to the soundtrack a few times in the past and just didn’t get it. I just didn’t understand why people were so crazy over it. It was interesting, but I didn’t feel anything emotionally. Then I got the soundtrack for Christmas and listened to it on my terrible, horrible, no good, very long car ride to New Jersey last weekend, and something about being in the car and surrounded by the music finally helped me feel it. I’ve been listening to exclusively the Hamilton soundtrack ever since.

I didn’t make any new year’s resolutions or goals for 2017. I didn’t for 2016 either, and I feel pretty good about it. Goals stress me out rather than motivating me, and I never follow through on resolutions anyway. I do, however, have an extensive list of shit I need to get done this year. Exciting, adult things like an eye exam, gum surgery, wisdom teeth extractions, and rolling over 401(k)’s, whee! I’m hoping to chip away at things bit by bit and get most of the scary, expensive stuff like gum surgery out of the way before I (hopefully) get knocked up later this year.

What’s the most pressing thing on your 2017 to-do list?
